CELL PHONE ADDICTION

~Signs and Symptoms of Cell Phone Addiction~

Although cell phone addiction is not yet listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5), research has compared it to gambling addiction, which has clearer diagnostic criteria and is included in the DSM-5.

At least 4 of the following signs and symptoms are thought to comprise criteria for cell phone addiction, and the problematic cell phone overuse must cause significant harm in the individual’s life:

A need to use the cell phone more and more often in order to achieve the same desired effect.
Persistent failed attempts to use cell phone less often.
Preoccupation with smartphone use.
Turns to cell phone when experiencing unwanted feelings such as anxiety or depression.
Excessive use characterized by loss of sense of time.
Has put a relationship or job at risk due to excessive cell phone use.
Tolerance.

Need for newest cell phone, more applications, or increased use.
Withdrawal, when cell phone or network is unreachable.

Anger
Tension
Depression
Irritability
Restlessness

LOOK UP, LOOK AROUND

I was on my way home tonight. The red light came on and I glanced to the car next to mine. There were two people in it. Both were looking at the electronic devices. I assume their cell phones. Some thoughts came to mind.

Everywhere I see human beings looking down

Doesn’t matter what age, doesn’t matter which gender

It’s always a technology device looked at

Be it a belligerent child

Be it a bored adult.

Look up, look around

Life is passing by you.

Missing all experiences, missing all the beauty

Missing everyday miracles as they happen

Stuck in a technology cell …. that’s why it’s called a “cell” phone.

How Have Cell Phones Impacted Teenagers’ Socialization

Mobile phones have had a huge impact on how teenagers socialize with both their peer groups and family members. This form of communication has changed aspects of teenagers’ everyday social life by building their personal and group identities, their social relationships and social networks, and allows for them to engage in intense social interactions with members of their peer groups beyond parental control.

In the research article “The Impact of Mobile Use on Teenagers’ Socialization” the researchers did an experiment to see how teenagers believed mobile phones impacted how they socialize. The researchers made a questionnaire asking questions about their use of mobile communication. After the study was conducted and the results were analyzed, the researcher believes that it is pretty obvious that the use of cell phones have increased social interactions among teenagers.

With this being the first empirical study of this topic, however, it is suggest by the researchers that more studies should be conducted before any solid conclusions are made.

Technology imposes social isolation

In 1960’s America, social interaction was an art form, a discipline nurtured during one’s prepubescent years through to the end of adolescence. These formative years focused on equipping people with the necessary social skills that would allow them to survive and thrive as human beings and as members of society.

However, the evolution of technology led to significant shifts in the way social interaction developed within American homes. This has degraded the nature of such interactions and the resulting relationships within our society in favor of convenience.

On this holiday this week we should do our best to “look up”, leave the cell phones, tablets and other electronic equipment away from the table. This is a special day and has always been a family day … in spite of any differences.

Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday celebrated in the United States and Canada as a day of giving thanks for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year.

Let’s be thankful for all bountiful blessings received, including technology. Yet, let’s take advantage of the time together and really connect.

This Is A Video EVERYONE Needs To See.

“This media we call social is anything but, when we open our computers and it’s our doors we shut” … This is one of the most vital messages that everyone needs to hear.

Look Up is a spoken word for the “online” generation. Written, performed and directed by Gary Turk, it is an extremely important life lesson for our youth. Children are growing up in a world where they don’t play outside or communicate with their friends. It seems today everything is done via text message or over the internet. It’s heartbreaking … I feel guilty myself.

We need to spread this message before it’s too late.
