#BringBackOurGirls ….. It’s day 183!!

~~October 14, 2014~~

It’s been months since heavily armed attackers stormed the Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, Nigeria and abducted nearly 300 girls during the night of 14-15 April. The majority of the schoolgirls have not been seen or heard from since and are feared to have been sold into “marriages” and sexual slavery in Nigeria, and potentially, in neighboring Cameroon and Chad.

The militant group, Boko Haram, whose name roughly translates to “Western education is a sin,” reportedly claimed responsibility, stating, “Western education should end. Girls, you should go and get married … I will sell them in the marketplace.” In a further alarming development, early in the week of 4 May, suspected Boko Haram gunmen abducted at least eight more girls – some possibly as young as eight years old – from a village in Borno State, Nigeria.

On 6 May, the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights stated that such human rights violations – selling the abducted girls as slaves – could constitute “crimes against humanity.”

However, efforts to rescue the girls have fallen desperately short.

Please join Equality Now and our Nigerian partners, Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative, Echoes of Women in Africa, Women for Justice and Peace, and Alliances for Africa, in urgently calling on the Government of Nigeria to:

Take immediate action to locate and rescue the girls and provide them with support services upon their return
Prosecute those responsible for the girls’ abduction and exploitation
Take steps to protect schools from attacks so that they are safe places to learn
Immediately institute, in consultation with women’s rights organizations, measures to protect the safety and human rights of women and girls throughout Nigeria, which are further endangered by the volatile political situation in the conflict areas

Also call on the Governments of Cameroon and Chad to swiftly determine whether the girls were transported into their countries and to assist in their rescue.

Nigeria Boko Haram video grab

~~September 23 ,2014~~

Today is the 162nd day since 273 Nigerian school girls were kidnapped. I haven’t forgotten about them. I wish that they were back home. I can’t bare to think what they have gone through and how they will be when they return … if they return.

Red Cross involved in secret Boko Haram prisoner swap to bring back kidnapped girls

By Colin Freeman

“The International Committee of the Red Cross has become involved in a secret prisoner swap deal to secure the release of the Nigerian schoolgirls kidnapped by Boko Haram, the Telegraph has learned.
Officials from the Geneva-based organization have sat in on talks between the Nigerian government and a senior Boko Haram leader currently held in one of the country’s maximum security prisons.
The Red Cross officials have also visited a number of other jails, identifying a list of 16 senior commanders that Boko Haram wants freed in exchange for its hostages.
The group is thought to be holding more than 220 schoolgirls captive, having kidnapped them from the north-east town of Chibok in mid-April.
The ICRC’s role in the talks represents the first official confirmation that the Nigerian government is actively engaged in talks with Boko Haram over the release of the girls. Publicly, Nigeria’s president, Goodluck Jonathan, has maintained that the government would never agree to any kind of negotiations.”

#BringBackOurGirls …. can’t let this go!!

~~May 9, 2014~~

The plane went missing and media coverage was incessant.
200 schoolgirls forcibly taken from school and there’s silence. The girls were sitting their final Physics exam. They live in a region that has the lowest girl child enrollment in Nigeria. The girls were abducted by Boko Haram because they wanted an education. Not enough is being done to honor their courage.

The #BringBackOurGirls hashtag is keeping this story in the media. If it stays in the media hopefully the inept Nigerian government will act. If these girls had been kidnapped from an elite Nigerian boarding school, if they were children of the wealthy, it would be different.
However these are the children of the poor, and in Nigeria’s deeply inegalitarian society they are insignificant.
Hoping for the best, but fearing the worst.

Please sign the petition, keep the hashtag alive on all your social media channels and contact the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect, an advocacy organization that can advocate this case to the UN Security Council.
At this stage UN involvement is critical. Please share these photos and this information.
Thanks in advance.

“In Nigeria, over 200 girls were recently abducted from their boarding school and are reported to be eventually sold as brides for $ 12 each. This petition calls on all World Leaders and enabled parties to rescue them.

The abducted 200+ girls are victims of an ongoing conflict within Nigeria that they did not create, and their voices need to be heard.

We can only imagine what these 200+ girls have been through, and solicit that more effort be put to save them.

I am a young person who believes every child regardless of their sex, should not be denied access to education. We believe that more can be contributed to the efforts of the Nigerian government to ensure the safe return of these girls.

By signing this petition we express our solidarity with the kidnapped girls and implore the world not to forget them, support all efforts to ensure their safe return, and that efforts are made to ensure all schools are safe places to learn, protected from attack.”

After this event took place, little was reported in the mainstream media. It’s been the social media: Facebook, Twitter, the Blogosphere, etc, which has taken over to spread this information and report on updates. These girls have no voice now. It’s up to all of us to speak for them.

Please, keep this going.

The more, the “merrier” … for lack of a better phrase. Keep the pressure on. This is now in the eyes of the world!!
