Husband pays touching tribute to ‘love of his life’ in defiant message to attackers

The husband of a woman killed in the Paris attacks has written a touching message to the “love of my life” and promised to raise their 17-month-old son “happy and free ”.

Antoine Leiris, whose wife Helene Muyal-Leiris was among the 89 killed in the Bataclan concert hall attack on Friday evening, posted an emotional message on Facebook.

Mr Leiris, who first met his 35-year-old wife 12 years ago, told the attackers he would “not grant you the gift of my hatred.”

In a post – shared more than 60,000 times by Tuesday morning – Mr. Leiris said in French he would raise their son Melvil “happy and free” and that responding to “hatred with anger is falling victim to the same ignorance that has made you what you are.”

His Facebook tribute to his wife and challenge to her killers has since been shared thousands of times. Mr Leiris read out the letter to BBC News in Paris.

To start the day ….. “Reminiscing”!!

I’m feeling sentimental and emotional this morning.

I spent time with family this weekend and stories that some didn’t know were shared. It’s a wonderful feeling to feel liberated from long-held secrets because of fear of rejection. 

Some may find this baffling because I have been very open here, in my “spot” about the recent ruling in Florida, where I live, about marriage equality. I have been proud to announce that I married my soul mate, my best friend and the love of my life on January 6, 2015. Something that we thought we’d never seen in our lifetime.

We have been “traveling together”, connected somehow since 1969 when we met. We stayed in touch when life got in the way. Reconnected since 1996 and together since.

So, if you don’t mind, bear with me a little and share a video, made by a wonderful friend, with you that shows some details of our story.

A very special Three Kings Day … a wish come true! We will be legally married today. What a gift!!

All my life I’ve known that I was different. At the time, I didn’t have a name for it. Now I do.

The name doesn’t make me. It doesn’t define me. It’s part of me … like being left-handed, like having brown eyes, like being a retired doctor. This is a day that I always looked at … way far in the future. This is a day that I didn’t think I would see in my lifetime. This is really happening today.
