To start the day …. “Two months …. seems like an eternity … “!!

WE REMEMBER

I woke up early this morning.

Two months ago, around this time,  I learned about the senseless killing of members of the LGBT community in Orlando.

We all know by now that they were at Pulse, a local gay club, celebrating Latin night.

Since that day, many other ugly/sad things have happened.

More details have come out, autopsy results are available.

The killer shot victims more than 200 times in 2o minutes.

The actions of the local and, maybe federal authorities, are under scrutiny.

I wonder why it took that long to go into the club and stop this maniac.

For 49 families their lives will never be the same.

We remember!!

This song really speaks to me, and really speaks about the pain it can feel to be judged for who you love, who you are, or what you look like.
My heart goes out to all of those who have been effected by the killings at Pulse in Orlando, Florida.

THE LAW OF THE LAND

A historic day which I remember very clearly.

I was sitting in my office, scrolling through Facebook when the first meme/graph related to the decision of the Supreme Court came down.

Marriage equality was the “law of the land“.

I remember thinking that this was only the beginning.

There was a lot more to get done.

This was the first step and we had many more to take.

It’s said that the longest journey starts with the first step and there we were.

Pride was all arround.

Since this momentous day, the backlash has been incredible.

As noted below many anti LGBT bills have been introduced in several states.

The culmination was the Orlando Pulse shooting which claimed the lives of 49 members of the LGBT community.

Can’t rest on our laurels, the mission continues.

#LoveWins: Celebrating One Year of Marriage Equality in America

In a historic 5-4 ruling exactly a year ago, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that bans on marriage for same-sex couples are unconstitutional, paving the way for nationwide marriage equality.

Two years prior, rulings in the historic Supreme Court cases United States v. Windsor and Hollingsworth v. Perry struck down Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act and brought marriage equality back to California, respectively, laying the groundwork for Obergefell v. Hodges to make marriage equality the law of the land in all 50 states.

In 2016 alone, more than 200 anti-LGBTQ bills have been introduced in 34 states. HRC has been on the ground fighting back against these dangerous pieces of legislation. While most have been defeated, five of those hateful bills (one in North Carolina, Tennessee and Kansas and two in Mississippi) have become law.

Tragically, those who lost their lives in the Orlando attack two weeks ago demonstrate why our battle against hatred and violence is so important to the LGBTQ community.

As we honor and celebrate this historic day, we must recommit ourselves to ending discrimination against LGBTQ people and help realize a world that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for all.

FREEDOM TO MARRY HAS A NEW AD … LOVE WINS

On June 26, 2015, the United States Supreme Court issued a historic, sweeping ruling in favor of the freedom to marry in Obergefell v. Hodges. The unprecedented decision, decades in the making, will soon bring the freedom to marry to same-sex couples across the country, ending marriage discrimination once and for all.

The ruling means that same-sex couples throughout the entire nation will no longer be banned from the rights and responsibilities of marriage guaranteed by the Constitution.

Evan Wolfson, founder and president of Freedom to Marry, celebrated joyously with the thousands of Americans couples who will finally be able to share in the fundamental freedom to marry the person they love. He said:

Today’s ruling is a transformative triumph decades in the making, a momentous victory for freedom, equality, inclusion, and above all, love.

For anyone who ever doubted that we could bend the arc of the moral universe toward justice, today the United States again took a giant step toward the more perfect union we the people aspire to.

Today the Liberty Bell rings alongside wedding bells across an ocean of joy.

With the ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges, the justices affirmed what a super-majority of Americans had come to understand: the freedom to marry is a precious, fundamental right that belongs to all, and that same-sex couples and our families share the same dreams and needs as any others.
