On Tuesday, February 7, night Mitch McConnell stood up in the Senate and within the space of a minute or so managed to enrage Democrats, women, civil rights activists, the ghost of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, you name it.

By invoking the rarely used Rule 19 of the Senate to stop Sen. Elizabeth Warren from reading into the official record a letter penned by the late Coretta Scott King in 1986, in opposition to a judicial nomination of Jeff Sessions, McConnell created an immediate firestorm and gave the left a new martyr.

The general consensus of writers and political observers was that the normally careful McConnell had made a rare misstep. Not only did he silence a popular liberal firebrand, but in a way he also silenced the widow of civil rights hero Martin Luther King Jr.

With Warren facing surprisingly low approval ratings in Massachusetts, he may have just given her 2018 re-election and a possible presidential run in 2020 a high-profile boost.

He may have even coined a slogan for both campaigns:

“She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.”

Common says ‘Selma’ song ‘Glory’ is intended to inspire, unite

Rapper and actor Common says he and singer-songwriter John Legend were so inspired by the story at the center of Selma they had no trouble writing “Glory,” their anthem for freedom and justice.The memorable music from the current Best Picture Oscar nominee has already earned the recording artists Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice awards for Best Original Song. It also is nominated for an Oscar in the same category.

Asked by UPI in New York last month before the Martin Luther King Jr. bio-picture opened in theaters how he and Legend came to collaborate on the song, Common replied: “I’m ingrained in this. This is who I am, speaking up for socially conscious things. And being able to be an actor in the film really gave me a lot of what to write about and I knew the history.

“So, I called John and I told him everything that was going on with Selma. He hadn’t seen the film yet, obviously. I hadn’t seen the film yet. We just had a quick discussion and I gave him three titles that I thought we should use and one of them was ‘Glory‘ and he wrote a piano piece and then wrote a chorus for ‘Glory‘ and when I got the music back I was like, ‘Oh, man, this is touching me.’ So, it didn’t take a long time to write. This is what I love to do. Write music that inspires people and brings people together and motivates people, so I just wrote from my heart … It’s in my soul. I told them I could write this song forever.”

I'm originally from Puerto Rico. I was born in Santurce and raised in Rio Piedras. I currently live in Florida - since 1999. I have a doctorate degree in Medicine; completed in 1976. My Internal Medicine specialty was completed in 1979. Worked for Puerto Rico's health system until 1985. At this time, I'm happily retired after working for the federal government for almost 28yrs. I also worked for the government of Puerto Rico from 1979 through 1985 .... for a total of almost 40 years as a physician. I want to offer any knowledge that I have to anyone "out there" who is interested. My views are liberal in almost every sense. My knowledge is "eclectic" - a bit of everything. Music and reading are my passion. Blogging has also become a very interesting endeavor. Metaphysical topics attract me. I'm interested in news - reporting human issues like injustice, discrimination and abuse - the "wrongly" affected. My intention is to bring this knowledge to an understandable level and to help anyone in need. I'm open to questions and will answer them to the best of my ability. Currently working on an enterprise whose main mission will be to bring peoples of all walks of life together. To be one .... since we ALL are ONE!! The future looks bright and promising!!!
