Puerto Ricans Strike on May Day

~WILL GATHER AGAIN THIS YEAR~

The people of Puerto Rico are beyond being tired!

They are organizing to express their feelings toward the overall status of the Island as well as the way the after effects of Hurricane María have been dealt with.

There are some towns in the Island that still do not have restored electric power.

The 2018 hurricane season is around the corner.

No other option but strike! Take to the streets!

Anger spreads across Puerto Rico over lack of basic services

Protests will block roads in Puerto Rico’s capital as May Day demonstrators angered by a long economic crisis march against looming austerity measures and demand an audit to identify those responsible for running up $70 billion in public debt.

Puerto Rico is struggling to emerge from a recession caused in part by previous administrations that for decades borrowed billions of dollars to cover budget deficits.

In June 2015 the island’s then-governor announced that the debt was unpayable, and the government has since racked up multimillion-dollar defaults on government-issued bonds that were popular because they were triple tax-exempt.

Puerto Rico’s Senate has ordered government agencies to explain why tens of thousands of people in rural areas remain without power or appropriate shelter as anger grows about the lack of basic services more than seven months after hurricanes Irma and María.

The agencies have been given five days to present a plan on how and when they will address the needs of rural towns, an order that came as police in a small mountain town blocked power crews from leaving Tuesday. Joining the protest was the mayor and dozens of people who noted that nearly 40% of Las Piedras’ inhabitants were still without electricity service as crews prepared to leave for another town on company orders.

“This is unfair,” 62-year-old town resident Rafael Jimenez said by phone.

“I don’t have a problem with other towns getting power because it’s a national necessity, but we need it, too.”

The standoff caught the attention of top Puerto Rico government officials and ended several hours later after the power company promised it would keep crews in Las Piedras until service is fully restored.

Justo Gonzalez, the company’ executive sub director, said in a statement that he is committed to restoring power to everyone but that blocking crews would only delay those efforts.

MAY DAY

~April showers bring May flowers ~
🌺 🌸🌼🌸🌺🌼🌸🌺🌼🌸🌼🌺

May Day is a public holiday usually celebrated on May 1.

It is an ancient northern hemisphere spring festival.

What is May Day?
Depending on where you are, it’s either a seasonal celebration or a day to celebrate workers’ rights, or maybe a little bit of both.

Think of the latter use as a Labor Day, if you will, for the rest of the world.

Something to think about ….. “The First Memorial Day”!!

THE DAY AFTER

Posted on San Francisco BayView

By James DeWolf Perry

As we pause to remember the nation’s war dead, it’s worth remembering that Memorial Day was first celebrated by Black Union troops and free Black Americans in Charleston, South Carolina at the end of the Civil War.

As historian David Blight recounts in his masterful book, “Race and Reunion: The Civil War in American Memory” (2001), Charleston was occupied by Union troops in the spring of 1865, most white residents having fled the city. In this atmosphere, the free Black population of Charleston, primarily consisting of former slaves, engaged in a series of celebrations to proclaim the meaning of the war as they saw it.

The height of these celebrations took place on May 1, 1865, on the grounds of the former Washington Race Course and Jockey Club, an elite facility which had been used by the Confederates as a gruesome prison and mass grave for unlucky Union soldiers. Following the evacuation of Charleston, Black laborers had dug up the remains of Union soldiers, given them a proper burial, and built the trappings of a respectful cemetery around the site to memorialize their sacrifice.

~~May 1, 2015~~

Stop the world for a minute, bring it to a halt.

Stop and think. Stop and feel.

It isn’t easy being human these days. The world all over seems to have gone down a slippery slope. There’s madness, destruction, wars, hate, injustice, discrimination, killings, zealousness, jealousy, greed, division, class warfare …

the list is endless.

It seems we have forgotten that we came from the same Source and that we ALL comprise the human race.

Today is a special day:

GLOBAL LOVE DAY.

If only for a short time …. let love come into our hearts and stop …. think and feel.

We can’t give up.

~We Celebrate our Humanity~

As we continue to connect with people and organizations around the world, we are amazed at how much is being done in efforts to positively assist humanity. There are so many wonderful people and associations that are actively working on behalf of a community, nation and even in global proportions.

As we often remind ourselves, what is presented by mainstream information sources is often a narrow and negative perspective of what is happening upon this planet right now. To the contrary, we see and know that good and right is occurring everywhere. Look for love and you will see it all around you.

This simple reminder changes the very nature of our experience. We are what we place our attention upon. When we allow love to be our focus of life, we expand this in our everyday activities. It is as simple as changing each perspective and allowing the negative and limiting views to be released and replaced by a higher, more loving understanding.

We appreciate and are grateful for the courage each of you express. In a world that has historically revered the negative and fear-based aspects, it takes strength to be and share love. It is time for love to become our common vision.

Please join us. Be a part of this global day by choosing love, compassion, peace, and unity. Share this information with your friends, relatives and coworkers. Love locally and spread it globally.

Mission accomplished …. “In the Battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed”!!

Bush

~~September 2, 2014~~

Really? You serious? Naw …..

WHO CAN FORGET!!

I look at this picture. I remember his knee-bending, daunting stroll, wearing his flight suit, sauntering on board a USS Carrier.

~~THIS WAS 13 YEARS AGO~~

What have we seen since then? It’s worse now and the worst is yet to be. The appearance and strengthening of ISIS. The beheading of two American journalists and the threatening of a British one. Brace for more ….

~As it appears in …. ~

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mission_Accomplished_speech

“The 2003 Mission Accomplished speech gets its name from a banner that read “Mission Accomplished” displayed on the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln during a televised address by United States President George W. Bush on May 1, 2003 and the controversy that followed.

Bush stated at the time that this was the end to major combat operations in Iraq. Bush’s assertion — and the sign itself — became controversial after guerrilla warfare in Iraq increased during the Iraqi insurgency. The vast majority of casualties, both military and civilian, occurred after the speech.

M9

~~Description~~

On May 1, 2003, Bush became the first sitting President to make an arrested landing in a fixed-wing aircraft on an aircraft carrier when he arrived at the USS Abraham Lincoln in a Lockheed S-3 Viking, dubbed Navy One, as the carrier lay just off the San Diego coast, having returned from combat operations in the Persian Gulf. He posed for photographs with pilots and members of the ship’s crew while wearing a flight suit. A few hours later, he gave a speech announcing the end of major combat operations in the Iraq War. Far above him was the warship’s banner stating “Mission Accomplished.”

Bush was criticized for the historic jet landing on the carrier as an overly theatrical and expensive stunt. For instance, it was pointed out that the carrier was well within range of Bush’s helicopter, and that a jet landing was not needed. Originally the White House had stated that the carrier was too far off the California coast for a helicopter landing and a jet would be needed to reach it.

On the day of the speech, the Lincoln was only 30 miles (48 km) from shore but the administration still decided to go ahead with the jet landing. White House spokesman Ari Fleischer admitted that Bush “could have helicoptered, but the plan was already in place. Plus, he wanted to see a landing the way aviators see a landing.” The Lincoln made a scheduled stop in Pearl Harbor shortly before the speech, docked in San Diego after the speech, and returned to her home port in Everett, Washington on May 6, 2003.”

M12

~~THIS WAS 13 YEARS AGO~~

“We have difficult work to do in Iraq. We are bringing order to parts of that country that remain dangerous.”
“Our mission continues … The War on Terror continues, yet it is not endless. We do not know the day of final victory, but we have seen the turning of the tide.”

“In the Battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed.”

~President George W. Bush~

Iraq War opponents have used the phrase “mission accomplished” in an ironic sense, while others have non-politically cited it as an example of a general public relations failure.

And now, the incredible worsening of the situation in a war-torn country thanks to the U.S. of A.

~~September 1, 2014~~

Did you know that this Labor Day is the 120th anniversary of the national celebration? Former President Grover Cleveland signed legislation in 1894 making Labor Day a national holiday.

Border1

I wasn’t going to write any post about Labor Day today. There are plenty out there. However, I ran into the information above ….. 120th anniversary of such an important day!

As with many holidays, the main thing is getting the day off, celebrating the beginning or ending of summer, going to the beach, the ever present BBQ.

Usually there is so much more than that and how easy we forget!

L13

Labor Day in the United States is a holiday celebrated on the first Monday in September. It is a celebration of the American labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of their country.

Labor Day was promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, who organized the first parade in New York City. After the Haymarket Massacre, which occurred in Chicago on May 4, 1886, U.S. President Grover Cleveland feared that commemorating Labor Day on May 1 could become an opportunity to commemorate the affair. Thus, in 1887, it was established as an official holiday in September to support the Labor Day that the Knights favored.

The equivalent holiday in Canada, Labour Day, is also celebrated on the first Monday of September. In many other countries (more than 80 worldwide), “Labour Day” is synonymous with, or linked with, International Workers’ Day, which occurs on May 1.

LD

But the Labor Day holiday has a storied past, one of violence and celebration, that’s embedded deep in the history of the American labor movement. And while it has spread around the world in different forms, Labor Day has distinctly American roots.

When did Labor Day begin?

The modern holiday is widely traced back to an organized parade in New York City in 1882. Union leaders had called for what they had labelled a “monster labor festival” on Tuesday, Sept. 5, according to Linda Stinson, a former historian for the Department of Labor (the idea for a general labor festival may have originated in Canada, which today also celebrates “Labour Day” on the first Monday in September). Initially that morning, few people showed up, and organizers worried that workers had been reluctant to surrender a day’s pay to join the rally. But soon the crowds began flowing in from across the city, and by the end of the day some 10,000 people had marched in the parade and joined festivities afterward in what the press dubbed “a day of the people.”

When did it become an official holiday?

The practice of holding annual festivities to celebrate workers spread across the country, but Labor Day didn’t become a national holiday for more than a decade. Oregon became the first state to declare it a holiday in 1887, and states like New York, Massachusetts and Colorado soon followed suit. Under President Grover Cleveland, and amid growing awareness of the labor movement, the first Monday in September became a national holiday in 1896.

L22

Why is it on the first Monday in September anyway?

Labor union leaders had pushed for a September date for the New York demonstration, which coincided with a conference in the city of the Knights of Labor, one of the largest and most influential of the unions. The first two New York City Labor Days took place on the 5th of September, but in 1884, the third annual New York City Labor Day holiday was scheduled for the first Monday in September, and that date stuck.

~~The History behind Labor Day~~

~Published on Sept 3, 2012~

Labor Day is an American federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September (September 3 in 2012) that celebrates the economic and social contributions of workers. In 1882, Matthew Maguire, a machinist, first proposed the holiday while serving as secretary of the CLU (Central Labor Union) of New York. Others argue that it was first proposed by Peter J. McGuire of the American Federation of Labor in May 1882, after witnessing the annual labor festival held in Toronto, Canada.

Oregon was the first state to make it a holiday in 1887. By the time it became a federal holiday in 1894, thirty states officially celebrated Labor Day. Following the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of the U.S. military and U.S. Marshals during the Pullman Strike, the United States Congress unanimously voted to approve rush legislation that made Labor Day a national holiday; President Grover Cleveland signed it into law a mere six days after the end of the strike.

The September date originally chosen by the CLU of New York and observed by many of the nation’s trade unions for the past several years was selected rather than the more widespread International Workers’ Day because Cleveland was concerned that observance of the latter would be associated with the nascent Communist, Syndicalist and Anarchist movements that, though distinct from one another, had rallied to commemorate the Haymarket Affair in International Workers’ Day. All U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and the territories have made it a statutory holiday.
