DIALYSIS TREATMENT

~VIEQUES, PUERTO RICO~

This is a topic which is very dear and close to my heart.

As a retired physician, I fully understand the process, the need for treatment, the underlying medical conditions and the meaning of life-saving treatment.

On the other hand, my only brother died of complications of chronic renal failure several years ago. In the aftermath of Hurricane María, I often thought about him and how he would manage to receive this three times a week treatment when the electrical power situation and the hospital care was so lacking in my country.

One year after Hurricane María, Puerto Ricans living in Vieques, go through harrowing, uncomfortable, tiring, exhausting and dangerous ways to receive their treatment.

In medicine, dialysis is the process of removing excess water, solutes, and toxins from the blood in people whose kidneys can no longer perform these functions naturally.

Study Estimates Hurricane Maria Killed Nearly 5,000, But Barely Makes News

The Harvard study is an estimate of the number of people who died, drawn from a survey of 3,000 households. An estimate is not hard proof; and it comes eight months after Hurricane María assailed Puerto Rico last September with deadly winds and waters.

News organizations covered the hurricane and its effects for weeks last fall and have continued to drop in on that story.

But many of the deaths estimated by the Harvard researchers may have occurred in isolated areas in the months following the storm, as people struggled to survive without power, water and reliable food, long after the federal government insisted all had been restored.

SLAVERY ISN’T A CHOICE

It could never be!

Recently an American in the music sphere stated that ‘slavery is a choice’.

Interesting to note, he’s an African American himself.

The current political, social and cultural climate in America is such that it lends itself to this type of thinking. The mask is off. Racism, white supremacy, dominance, distortion of facts, ignorance of history or plain shameless self-serving.

On Wednesday’s episode of “Ellen,” May 2, host Ellen DeGeneres sat down with James Shaw Jr. – the 29-year-old Nashvillian now known as the “Waffle House Hero” after wrestling a gun away from a shooter at a Waffle House in Antioch, Tenn.

During his interview with DeGeneres, Shaw recounted the events of the April 22 attack, which left four dead.

“Wow … You’re a really brave man,” DeGeneres said, and her audience broke into applause.

She also asked Shaw how he felt about being called a hero.

“I don’t have a problem with it,” he said. “It’s just if you’re in that same situation, I want  you to know that a regular guy did it, and I want you to emulate that same thing, and know you have that fire inside yourself.”

The two discussed the GoFundMe campaign Shaw had set up for funeral expenses for the victims, as well as the campaign for Shaw and his daughter set up by journalist Yashar Ali.
