This poem is timeless and immemorial. It is so ‘on point’ that is has been used frequently to describe current happenings.

A friend sent me this site and a link to this modern adaptation. It’s befitting to the current reality of the nation.

But during all these months, I haven’t noticed much speaking out by one group in support of another.

It’s time for everyone to remember Niemöller’s words, and speak out in support of anyone who becomes the target of this hate-monger and his alt-right cohorts.

Cinco de Mayo, Spanish for “Fifth of May”, is a celebration held on May 5. The date is observed to commemorate the Mexican Army’s unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza.

In the United States, Cinco de Mayo is sometimes mistaken to be Mexico’s Independence Day – the most important national holiday in Mexico – which is celebrated on September 16, commemorating the Cry of Dolores that initiated the war of Mexican independence from Spain.

The quotation stems from Niemöller’s lectures during the early postwar period.

On Wednesday, October 19, when moderator Chris Wallace asked Trump about immigration policy and reform, he began, as he often does, painting undocumented immigrants as violent criminals. (Despite research repeatedly proving native born citizens are more likely to be linked to violent crime than immigrants.)

Then the GOP nominee moved on to drugs, drug lords and, again, the need to deport “bad people”:

We’ll get them out, secure the border, and once the border is secured, at a later date we’ll make a determination as to the rest. But we have some bad hombres here and we’re going to get them out.

Politics aside, the language Trump uses is just as important as what he is, or rather isn’t, saying. Sure he’s repeatedly spoken about immigrants as if they were a biblical plague of sombrero-wearing, mustachioed criminals yelling “arriba! arriba!” as they run across the border with taco bowls filled with drugs.

But on Wednesday night he turned to Spanish to make his point. 

When Trump casually used “bad hombres” that night, what he was trying to do was use our own language against us.

Off-the-cuff or not, that’s just all sorts of WRONG! … to put it in the Donald’s own language.

While many reacted with quips and memes to Trump’s awkward use of “bad hombres,” what I heard was a corruption of something I felt to be mine. My mother’s tongue, the language in which I uttered my first word as a child, the language that feels like family, culture and home in my mouth, being used by a man set on vilifying my community and immigrants.

And in this case Donald, no se puede.

Thursday night, September 2, in an appearance on MSNBC, Donald Trump surrogate Marco Gutierrez warned of impending taco overlords if immigration continues unchecked.

Gutierrez, who was born in Mexico and is co-founder of Latinos for Trump, said to MSNBC,

“My culture is a very dominant culture.

It is imposing and it’s causing problems.”

Then he said the line that started a hashtag:

“If you don’t do something about it, you’re going to have taco trucks on every corner.”

Once they utter a stance, he changes.

~Mass Deportation May Sound Unlikely, But It’s Happened Before~

Presidential candidate Donald Trump’s proposal to deport all 11 million immigrants living in the country illegally, along with their U.S.-born children, sounds far-fetched. But something similar happened before.

During the 1930’s and into the 1940’s, up to 2 million Mexicans and Mexican-Americans were deported or expelled from cities and towns across the U.S. and shipped to Mexico. According to some estimates, more than half of these people were U.S. citizens, born in the United States.

It’s a largely forgotten chapter in history that Francisco Balderrama, a California State University historian, documented in Decade of Betrayal: Mexican Repatriation in the 1930’s. He co-wrote that book with the late historian Raymond Rodriguez.

“There was a perception in the United States that Mexicans are Mexicans,” Balderrama said. “Whether they were American citizens, or whether they were Mexican nationals, in the American mind – that is, in the mind of government officials, in the mind of industry leaders – they’re all Mexicans.

So ship them home.”

It was the Great Depression, when up to a quarter of Americans were unemployed and many believed that Mexicans were taking scarce jobs. In response, federal, state and local officials launched so-called “repatriation” campaigns.

They held raids in workplaces and in public places, rounded up Mexicans and Mexican-Americans alike, and deported them.

The most famous of these was in downtown Los Angeles’ Placita Olvera in 1931.

Today, Torres serves on the board of La Plaza de Cultura y Artes in Los Angeles, a Mexican-American cultural center. In front of it stands a memorial that the state of California dedicated in 2012, apologizing to the hundreds of thousands of U.S. citizens who were illegally deported or expelled during the Depression.

Trump expresses regret for saying ‘the wrong thing,’ doesn’t specify

“Sometimes, in the heat of debate and speaking on a multitude of issues, you don’t choose the right words or you say the wrong thing.

I have done that.

And believe it or not, I regret it.

And I do regret it, particularly where it may have caused personal pain. Too much is at stake for us to be consumed with these issues,” Trump told supporters here.

He added:

Puerto Ricans do not wear Mexican hats.

We may look alike and share similarities.

Thanks to Justice Sotomayor, there’s a good impression about Puerto Ricans.

Puerto Ricans are good at sports, mostly baseball.

We are good at dancing salsa.

What we actually do is gather in pride, celebrate our country and display the flag.

This flag was once forbidden .. illegal to fly.

Punishable by law, convicted to serve time.
