Fear mongering is the deliberate use of fear based tactics including exaggeration and continual repetition to alter the perception of the public in order to achieve a desired outcome.

Probably the best-known example in American politics, pre-9/11, is the Daisy television commercial, a famous campaign television advertisement beginning with a little girl standing in a meadow with chirping birds, picking the petals of a daisy while counting each petal slowly. When she reaches “9”, an ominous-sounding male voice is then heard counting down a missile launch, and as the girl’s eyes turn toward something she sees in the sky, the camera zooms in until her pupil fills the screen, blacking it out.

When the countdown reaches zero, the blackness is replaced by the flash and mushroom cloud of a nuclear explosion.

Jane Goodall: “Message to Humanity and Monsanto”!!

Below is a clip of Jane Goodall taken from the film HUMAN, a documentary by Yann Arthus-Bertrand which examines the question of what it means to be human and live on planet Earth.

For those of you who don’t know, Dr. Jane Goodall is one of the world’s most prominent and popular primatologists, ethologists, anthropologists, and environmental activists. In the clip below, she shares some indispensable words of wisdom — wisdom that we must listen to carefully if our species is to move forward and thrive.

“If you really want something, you have to be prepared to work very hard, take advantage of opportunity, and above all never give up.”

The quote above is one example of the multiple points Jane makes in the video that really resonated with me. She expresses her wish that she had more time to do and to see all the things she would like, to connect with all the people she would like to meet, and I think that sense of desperation is something we can all relate to as we age. It’s important to take advantage of the time we have, right now, because we never know how much longer we have left in this life.

She also, of course, touches on animal rights, arguing that “we’re not the only beings with personalities, and minds capable of reasoning, and certainly not the only beings with emotions like happiness, sadness, fear, despair. Nor are we the only beings capable of giving and receiving love.”

Finally, she touches upon the biggest problem facing environmentalists today, and that is the difficulty of fighting the power of money:

“Because there’s absolutely no question. There are people in government, who truly agree when I talk with them, they agree that this mine shouldn’t go ahead, or that damn shouldn’t be built, or Monsanto shouldn’t be allowed to test its seeds here. It’s corruption really, the might of money, the corporations that hold governments in their hands, because of lobbying power and so forth, it’s really frightening.”

These are powerful words, and the truth is, the corporations that dictate governmental policy (and the methods by which they do this) are indeed frightening, as Goodall states. Governments and politicians are simply used as puppets to push along what many academics and politicians call “the invisible government.”

Monsanto is one of these corporations.

Fortunately, the story of Monsanto has shifted in recent years, and is becoming a shining example of the power we can wield when we come together for a common cause. Just a few short years ago, you would have been considered a conspiracy theorist for suggesting that GMO’s are or could be harmful to human health.

Today, dozens upon dozens of countries have completely banned them, or at least placed severe restrictions on them, and this is all due to awareness The latest example occurred a couple of months ago, with 19 countries in Europe completely banning them due to environmental and health concerns. Monsanto Company is a publicly traded American multinational agrochemical and agricultural biotechnology corporation headquartered in Creve Coeur, Greater St. Louis, Missouri.

It is a leading producer of genetically engineered (GE) seed and of the herbicide glyphosate, which it markets under the Roundup brand.

Founded in 1901 by John Francis Queeny, by the 1940s Monsanto was a major producer of plastics, including polystyrene and synthetic fibers. Some achievements by Monsanto and its scientists as a chemical company included breakthrough research on catalytic asymmetric hydrogenation and being the first company to mass-produce light emitting diodes (LEDs).

The company also manufactures controversial products such as the insecticide DDT, PCBs, Agent Orange, and recombinant bovine somatotropin (a.k.a. bovine growth hormone).

Monsanto was among the first to genetically modify a plant cell, along with three academic teams, which was announced in 1983, and was among the first to conduct field trials of genetically modified crops, which it did in 1987. It remained one of the top 10 U.S. chemical companies until it divested most of its chemical businesses between 1997 and 2002, through a process of mergers and spin-offs that focused the company onbiotechnology.

For its production of genetically modified crops, Monsanto’s chief technology officer Robert Fraley won the World Food Prize for “breakthrough achievements in founding, developing, and applying modern agricultural biotechnology”.

MEDICAL CORNER …. THE IMPORTANCE OF GMO FOOD LABELING …. Where’s the USA?

Unless you live under a rock, you’ve probably heard the term GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms), and have likely eaten foods that were genetically engineered in some form or fashion.

But, do you know what this actually means and what it’s doing to your body?

What is a GMO?

A genetically engineered food is a plant or meat product that has had its DNA artificially altered in a laboratory by genes from other plants, animals, viruses, or bacteria, in order to produce foreign compounds in that food. This type of genetic alteration is not found in nature, and is experimental. The correct scientific term is “transgenics,” and is also often referred to as (GE) genetically engineered.

64 countries, including the entire European Union and China, have jumped the non-GMO train, banning the use, or requiring the labeling, of all GMO products. Of all of the developed countries in the world, the United States and Canada have yet to jump ship. Why is this? Are we so concerned with money that we would jeopardize the welfare of our citizens. With some of the highest cancer rates (and other health issues) in the world, we should probably take note of the nutritional strategies other nations are implementing and align ourselves with those strategies. Besides, our people are demanding it.

But, instead of GMO labeling, what do we get?

A Website funded by the likes of Monsanto, trying to shift the conversation about labeling and other issues. The site was launched by the agriculture biotech industry — specifically Monsanto, Dow Chemical, DuPont, Syngenta, Bayer CropScience and BASF — calling it a place where you and I can go and pose our most pressing GMO questions. I’m not going to say that every bit of information on the site is false, but would you visit RJR.com to learn about the health risks associated with smoking? I wouldn’t think so. However, the tobacco industry has been using this tactic for years.

What Can You Do?

A recent poll, conducted earlier this year by The New York Times shows that three-quarters of Americans are concerned about the number of genetically modified or engineered foods. And a staggering 93 percent of them support mandatory labeling of GMO products. It is now the responsibility of policy writers and legislators to see that this public outcry makes its way to a bill.

You can help push your local and state representatives by telling the FDA that you wish to have your foods labeled as Genetically Modified. Visit this site to voice your opinion and protect your right to know what’s in your food.
