“I remember having a daydream about the opening acoustic guitar part of “All Along The Watchtower” ending with a Native American scream and a big native drum on the downbeat.

That was the spark to assemble one of our biggest and deepest Songs Around The World.

From Beirut to New Orleans to the Lakota Nation musicians play and sing like a musical army determined to stop suffering and greed all over the world. As a society we need to get back to our roots and connect deeper with our ancestors and native people in general so we can find the wisdom we need to move forward as a human race.

How I wish I’d heard those words as I was coming up in my life.

I lived through this alone.

I was born and raised in Puerto Rico, far away from this struggle.

I struggled on my own until I discovered that I wasn’t the only one who was different.

I discovered others like me.

The process was long and prolonged. There was no internet then. The books that were available were few and difficult to come by.

Yet, I totally identify with the struggle.

That’s why we are not standing down now after the advances made since then.

I thank all of those who came before me.

I refuse to go back into the closet.

A few weeks ago, early January, the Hollywood sign altered to read ‘Hollyweed‘.

Armed with four tarpaulins, a prankster had climbed Mount Lee under the cover of night to edit the iconic landmark, and changed it to “HOLLYWeeD.”

Wouldn’t it have been awesome if, instead, it read ‘Mni Wiconi’?

Dakota Access Pipeline

What happens next?

On Sunday afternoon, December 4, tribe members and their allies cried tears of joy after the US Army said it would not – for now – allow the pipeline to cross under Lake Oahe in North Dakota.
The Army says the plan should be carefully restudied, and alternative routes should be more deeply considered.

The Army’s statement does not rule out approval for the current plan in the future. And with President Obama leaving office in January, many questions still remain about what’s next for the project.

WHITE INVADERS

~Native Americans and the Federal Government~

At the start of the twentieth century there were approximately 250,000 Native Americans in the USA – just 0.3 per cent of the population – most living on reservations where they exercised a limited degree of self-government.

During the course of the nineteenth century they had been deprived of much of their land by forced removal westwards, by a succession of treaties (which were often not honored by the white authorities) and by military defeat by the USA as it expanded its control over the American West.

In 1831 the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, John Marshall, had attempted to define their status. He declared that Indian tribes were ‘domestic dependent nations’ whose ‘relation to the United States resembles that of a ward to his guardian’. Marshall was, in effect, recognizing that America’s Indians are unique in that, unlike any other minority, they are both separate nations and part of the United States.

This helps to explain why relations between the federal government and the Native Americans have been so troubled.

A guardian prepares his ward for adult independence, and so Marshall’s judgement implies that US policy should aim to assimilate Native Americans into mainstream US culture. But a guardian also protects and nurtures a ward until adulthood is achieved, and therefore Marshall also suggests that the federal government has a special obligation to care for its Native American population.

As a result, federal policy towards Native Americans has lurched back and forth, sometimes aiming for assimilation and, at other times, recognizing its responsibility for assisting Indian development.

… and it continues to this day!!

ATROCITIES AGAINST NATIVE AMERICANS

This is a topic which isn’t really taught in schools.

I went to a private, Catholic school in Puerto Rico, and don’t remember any teaching about the genocide of the Native Americans.

For that matter, I wasn’t taught about the atrocities committed to the indigenous people of Puerto Rico either.

It is now, after my retirement, that I have plenty of time on my hands, that I’m catching up to history.

This is a topic that has always been interesting to me.

As I keep abreast of the event in Cannon Ball, North Dakota, I’ve been looking for information about this topic and many other related ones.

Seems that we have to do the investigating ourselves.

Today there are over 500 Native American tribes in the United States, each with a distinct culture, way of life and history. Even today, Native Americans face large challenges to cope with the disadvantages history has left them and ongoing cases of discrimination.

While the Native Americans’ history began thousands of years ago, their European encounter started with one man.

Determined to find a direct route from Europe to Asia, Christopher Columbus stumbled on the Americas in 1492.

Native American tribe takes oil fight to the United Nations

The simmering showdown here between the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the company building the Dakota Access crude-oil pipeline began as a legal battle.

It has turned into a movement.

We are ALL connected through NATURE!! 

Over the past few weeks, thousands of Native Americans representing tribes from all over the country have traveled to this central North Dakota reservation to camp in a nearby meadow and show solidarity with a tribe they think is once again receiving a raw deal at the hands of commercial interests and the U.S. government.

That river is the source of water for the reservation’s 8,000 residents.

Any leak, tribal leaders argue, would cause immediate and irreparable harm. And tribal leaders point to what they consider a double standard, saying that the pipeline was originally going to cross the Missouri north of Bismarck, the state capital, but was rerouted because of powerful opposition that did not want a threat to the water supply there.

The tribe says it also is fighting the pipeline’s path because, even though it does not cross the reservation, it traverses sacred territory taken away from the tribe in a series of treaties that have been forced upon it over the past 150 years.
