ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SCREWING PUERTO RICO

NOTHING NEW

I must confess that I didn’t really know the complex history that exists between Puerto Rico, my country, and the mighty imperialistic U.S. of A.

I’m truly ashamed to say that I didn’t find out about this history until 2015 when I found out about and read the book written by Nelson A. Denis “War Against All Puerto Ricans‘.

I need to say that I grew up under the shadow of the ‘greatest country in the world’ and believed every word I was programmed with. The information provided in the book, very well written, researched and totally documented, wasn’t taught in the private school that I went to.

I went to a Catholic school in Río Piedras, somewhat a suburb of San Juan, ran by American nuns and priests.

Samantha Bee takes a humorous look at a synopsis of this history in light of the humanitarian disaster caused by Hurricane María and the response by the American government lead by the “Moron-in-Chief“, Drumpf.

On Wednesday’s “Full Frontal,”, October 4, Samantha Bee explained that the way Drumpf “helped” storm-ravaged Puerto Ricans followed a 100-year-old pattern.

A YEAR AGO TODAY 

I first heard about this book through a very good friend of mine who posted about it on Facebook.

I ordered my copy from Amazon.

One year ago today it arrived.

Since then, I’ve read it twice, have two English copies signed by the author, Nelson A. Denis and have my copy in Spanish.

I met the author personally on a trip he made to Orlando to speak at a local university.

This has been an extremely eye-opening experience.

I’ve learned about the real history about my country in my 60’s.

These historical facts were never taught at my school.

Through this book …. I now know my country’s history.

Thank you to the author for leading me along a pathway that I didn’t know.

PUERTO RICO’S CRISIS

I have been following Puerto Rico’s situation for a long time.

As many of you may know, I was born there.

I’ve been also following John Oliver, Lin-Manuel Miranda and the “War Against All Puerto Ricans” blog.

Today they all came together to explain and plead the case for Puerto Rico.

As I looked through Facebook this morning, I found this video … presented over and over …. and, of course, I shared over and over.

Why?

Because this is my country and not many know the real situation.

Many think that Puerto Rico is a dead-beat country who won’t pay the money it owes.

The situation is much more complicated.

To add insult to injury, there’s a group called CFIF paying for TV ads which state that what Puerto Rico wants is a “Super Chapter 9” Bankruptcy Legislation.

Please, take a short time of your busy schedule and be educated about the situation in Puerto Rico.

Remember, Puerto Ricans ARE American citizens.

When it won the Spanish-American War in 1898, the U.S. acquired Puerto Rico as a new “possession.” The American who led the invasion, Gen. Nelson A. Miles, promised “liberty” to Puerto Ricans. He also promised “prosperity” and “the advantages and blessings of enlightened civilization.”

This never occurred.

Puerto Rico was stripped of her land and natural resources by U.S. banking syndicates. By 1934, the theft was so extreme that Puerto Ricans organized an island-wide agricultural strike. In response to this strike the Yale-educated Chief of Police, whose father owned the Riggs National Bank, promised that “there will be war to the death against all Puerto Ricans.”

…. a dream come true!

I was born and raised in Puerto Rico.

I lived all my childhood, teenage and early adult years in the Island.

It wasn’t until 1999 that I moved to the United States.

I went to a Catholic private school for all of my schooling. Needless to say, I grew up totally Americanized.

We learned about the history of the Island but nothing like I learned when I first read this book.

It took me 60 years to become fully aware of what has been done to Puerto Rico by “the master”.

Puerto Rico has never been independent .. only for a few days after freeing itself from the claws of the Spanish empire.

After the Spanish-American War, Puerto Rico, along with several other nations under Spanish rule, became bounties of war and were handed over to the United States.

But I digress ….

I read the “War” book in total disbelief ….

How could the “greatest country in the world” do these things to another country under their “protection”?

I completed my reading withing three days.

I couldn’t fathom that these things occurred in my country. I was born in 1950 … the year that the “revolution” was squashed by the might of the super-power and the corruption of the local government.

Last night, I had the opportunity to meet the author and thank him personally for taking the band off my eyes and for educating me about the true story of Puerto Rico, my country.

The battled raged back in the 50’s and it’s still raging to this day.

In 1950, after over 50 years of military and colonial rule, the Nationalist Party of Puerto Rico staged an unsuccessful armed insurrection against the United States. Violence swept through the Island: assassins were sent to kill President Truman, gunfights roared in eight towns, police stations and post offices were burnt down. In order to suppress this uprising, the US Army deployed thousands of troops and bombarded two towns, marking the first time in history that the US government bombed its own citizens.

Nelson A. Denis tells this powerful story through the eyes of the controversial life of Don Pedro Albizu Campos, the president of the Nationalist Party.

Puerto Rico, officially known as the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico (Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico), is an “unincorporated territory” of the United States, located in the northeastern Caribbean, east of the Dominican Republic and west of both the U.S. Virgin Islands and the British Virgin Islands.

Puerto Rico is only 100 miles long by 35 miles wide, making it the smallest island of the Greater Antilles. Puerto Rico (Spanish for “rich port”) consists of an archipelago that includes the main island of Puerto Rico and several islands: Vieques, Culebra, Mona and numerous islets.

The United States “liberated” Puerto Rico from Spain in 1898. The following year, Hurricane San Ciriaco destroyed millions of dollars in property and nearly the entire year’s coffee crop. Banks swept in, buying land at a steep discount.

Even worse, in 1901, property taxes on every remaining farmer in Puerto Rico were raised. Farmers were forced to borrow from American banks at usurious rates; many lost their land to foreclosure. By 1930, 34 percent of land in use was managed on behalf of absentee owners.

Independence is the only solution, for Puerto Rico and the United States. After 117 years, many Puerto Ricans are victims of Stockholm syndrome, fearful of losing the “safety net” of United States benefits. But it’s clear that the safety net is a chimera. A gradual transition to independence (like that of the Philippines in 1946) would allow both island and mainland to adjust to a sovereign and self-sustaining Republic of Puerto Rico. It is the only way to end this colonial tragedy.

I understand the statement about Texas

Texas secession movements principally focus on the secession of Texas during the American Civil War and the activities of organizations which have existed since the 1990’s. The idea of state secession is not explicitly addressed in the United States Constitution and the issue was both publicly debated and threatened from after the Revolutionary War up until the Civil War.

Texas was a sovereign state prior to negotiation annexation with the United States.

This history has affected the state’s politics and identity from the 19th century to the present, including its standing in the Confederacy in the Civil War to education and even tourism in the 20th century.

Modern secession efforts have existed in the state at least since the 1990’s, focusing first on the Republic of Texas organization founded by Richard Lance McLaren and later on the Texas Nationalist Movement headed by Daniel Miller.

I have posted a few articles about Puerto Rico, my country, recently. After doing so, this book came to my attention and I read it in two days. I am currently re-reading it again.

The events richly detailed, extremely well documented and researched took place before and around the year that I was born.

I’m getting an education about my country now as an older adult.

My eyes are opening to information that I wasn’t aware of.

This is serious, historical facts.

Every Puerto Rican should be aware of them and should take the time to read this book. I’m not blatantly marketing for it. It’s beyond that.

It’s the history of my country …. in the hands of two empires: Spain and the United States.
