Nepal earthquake: Death toll passes 4,800 as rescuers face challenges

Kathmandu, Nepal (CNN)

More than 4,800 people dead. More than 9,200 injured. Eight million affected across Nepal. One million children urgently in need of help. Those are the startling numbers that indicate the scale of the devastation from the huge earthquake that struck the Himalayan nation on Saturday.

And some of the grim figures are likely to get even worse as hopes of rescuing any more survivors diminish every hour. Heartbreaking scenes of suffering and loss are playing out across this shell-shocked nation as it reels from its deadliest natural disaster in more than 80 years.

Official: Death toll expected to rise

The death toll has now climbed to 4,768 in Nepal, the country’s National Emergency Coordination Center said early Wednesday, as rescue and relief efforts continue. Another 72 people died in India, while China has reported 25 deaths.

Nepal army Lt. Col. A. J. Thapa told CNN’s Sumnima Udas that the first 72 hours after the earthquake is the time when the most lives can be saved.

La Bamba” is a Mexican folk song, originally from the state of Veracruz, best known from a 1958 adaptation by Ritchie Valens, a top 40 hit in the U.S. charts and one of early rock and roll’s best-known songs. ~~LYRICS~~

(the words say it all)

Old pirates, yes they rob I
Sold I to the merchant ships
Minutes after they took I
From the bottomless pit

But my hand was made strong
By the hand of the almighty
We forward in this generation
Triumphantly

Won’t you help to sing
Another songs of freedom?
‘Cause all I’ve ever had
Redemption songs
Redemption songs

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our minds
Have no fear for atomic energy
‘Cause none of them can stop the time

How long shall they kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look?
Some say it’s just a part of it
Well we’ve got to fulfill the book

Won’t you help me sing
Another song of freedom?
It’s all I ever have
Redemption songs, yes lord
Redemption songs
Redemption songs

Wap choo wap choo wah
Come on with me people
Wap choo wap choo wah
Come on with me children

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our mind
Have no fear for atomic energy
‘Cause none of them can stop the time

How long shall they kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look?
Some say it’s just a part of it
We’ve got to fulfill the book

So won’t you help me sing
Another song of freedom?
It’s all I ever had
Redemption songs, yes lord
Redemption songs
Redemption songs
Redemption songs, songs of freedom

Playing for Change hit it out of the park this time. This is a very well known song in the Latin community. Its origins are in the island of Cuba. There isn’t a citizen of Latin America who doesn’t know the verses, the music and the meaning of this song.

Guantanamera” (Spanish: “from Guantánamo [feminine]”, thus “the one from Guantánamo“) is perhaps the best known Cuban song and that country’s most noted patriotic song.

In 1966, a version by American vocal group The Sandpipers, based on an arrangement by Pete Seeger, became an international hit.

~~Music~~

The music for the song is sometimes attributed to José Fernández Diaz, known as Joseíto Fernández, who claimed to have written it at various dates (consensus puts 1929 as its year of origin), and who used it regularly in one of his radio programs. Some claim that the song’s structure actually came from Herminio “El Diablo” García Wilson, who could be credited as a co-composer. García’s heirs took the matter to court decades later but lost the case: the Supreme Court of Cuba credited Fernández as the sole composer of the music in 1993. Regardless of either claim, Fernández can safely be claimed as being the first public promoter of the song, through his radio programs.

Cuba2

~~Original lyrics and José Fernández~~

The lyrics to the song, as written by José Fernández, are about a woman from Guantánamo, with whom he had a romantic relationship, and who eventually left him. The alleged real story behind these lyrics (or at least one of many versions of the song’s origin that Fernández suggested during his lifetime) is that she did not have a romantic interest in him, but merely a platonic one. If the details are to be believed, she had brought him a steak sandwich one day as a present to the radio station where he worked. He stared at some other woman (and attempted to flirt with her) while eating the sandwich, and his friend yanked it out of his hands in disgust, cursed him and left.

He never saw her again. These words are rarely sung today.

Another history behind the chorus and its lyrics (“Guantanamera/Guajira Guantanamera …”) is similar: García claimed he was at a street corner with a group of friends and made a courteous pass (a polite pick-up line, like “your mother made you good” or “you came from a star”, piropo in Spanish) to a woman (who also happened to be from Guantánamo) who walked by the group.

She answered back rather harshly, offended by the pass. Stunned, he could not take his mind off her reaction while his friends made fun of him; later that day, sitting at a piano with his friends near him, he wrote the song’s main refrain.

We invite you to watch and enjoy another Song Around The World from our new album: “Guantanamera“.

We started the song with Carlos Varela in Havana and it features over 75 Cuban musicians around the world, from Havana and Santiago to Miami, Barcelona and Tokyo. We recorded and produced this track with Jackson Browne, who explains that “traveling with Playing For Change across Cuba was one of the most rewarding and inspiring musical experiences of my life.”

“One Day Like This”

Drinking in the morning sun
Blinking in the morning sun
Shaking off the heavy one
Oh, heavy like a loaded gun
What made me behave that way?
Using words I never say?
I can only think it must be love
Oh anyway, it’s looking like a beautiful day
Someone tell me how I feel
It’s silly wrong, but vivid right
Oh, kiss me like the final meal
Yeah, kiss me like we die tonight
‘Cause holy cow, I love your eyes
And only now I see the light
Yeah, lying with me half awake
Oh, anyway, it’s looking like a beautiful day
When my face is chamois creased
If you think I wink, I did
Oh, kiss me when my lips are thin
‘Cause holy cow, I love your eyes
And only now I see the light
Yeah, lying with you half awake
Stumbling over what to say
Well, anyway, it’s looking like a beautiful day
So throw those curtains wide
One day like this a year would see me right
Throw those curtains wide
One day like this a year would see me right

Holi is a spring festival also known as the festival of colors or the festival of love. It is an ancient Hindu religious festival which has become popular with non-Hindus in many parts of South Asia, as well as people of other communities outside Asia.

It is primarily observed in IndiaNepal, and other regions of the world with significant populations of Hindus or people of Indian origin. The festival has, in recent times, spread to parts of Europe and North America as a spring celebration of love, frolic, and colours.

Holi celebrations start with a Holika bonfire on the night before Holi where people gather, sing and dance. The next morning is a free-for-all carnival of colours, where participants play, chase and color each other with dry powder and colored water, with some carrying water guns and colored water-filled balloons for their water fight. Anyone and everyone is fair game, friend or stranger, rich or poor, man or woman, children and elders.

SB4

The frolic and fight with colors occurs in the open streets, open parks, outside temples and buildings. Groups carry drums and musical instruments, go from place to place, sing and dance. People move and visit family, friends and foes, first play with colours on each other, laugh and chit-chat, then share Holi delicacies, food and drinks. Some drinks are intoxicating. For example, Bhang, an intoxicating ingredient made from cannabis leaves, is mixed into drinks and sweets and consumed by many. In the evening, after sobering up, people dress up, visit friends and family.

Holi is celebrated at the approach of vernal equinox, on the Phalguna Purnima (Full Moon). The festival date varies every year, per the Hindu calendar, and typically comes in March, sometimes February in the Gregorian Calendar. The festival signifies the victory of good over evil, the arrival of spring, end of winter, and for many a festive day to meet others, play and laugh, forget and forgive, and repair ruptured relationships.

At the end of the day …. reach “Higher Ground”!!

~~June 5, 2014~~

Higher Ground” is a funk song written by Stevie Wonder and first appearing on his 1973 album Innervisions. The song reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the US Hot R&B Singles chart. Wonder wrote and recorded the song in a three-hour burst of creativity in May 1973. The album version of the song contains an extra verse and runs 30 seconds longer than the single version. The unique wah-clavinet sound in the song was achieved with a Mu-tron III envelope filter pedal. The bass is a Moog synthesizer. Via overdubs, Wonder played all instruments on the track, including drums.

BorderCal

This song was written 41 years ago. Listen to the lyrics carefully. Be amazed by the fact that these apply to this day.

What have we learned about our society and our world since then?

Seems to me …. not that much!

“Higher Ground”

People keep on learnin’
Soldiers keep on warrin’
World keep on turnin’
Cause it won’t be too long

Powers keep on lyin’
While your people keep on dyin’
World keep on turnin’
Cause it won’t be too long

I’m so darn glad he let me try it again
Cause my last time on earth I lived a whole world of sin
I’m so glad that I know more than I knew then
Gonna keep on tryin’
Till I reach my highest ground

Teachers keep on teachin’
Preachers keep on preachin’
World keep on turnin’
Cause it won’t be too long
Oh no

Lovers keep on lovin’
Believers keep on believin’
Sleepers just stop sleepin’
Cause it won’t be too long
Oh no

I’m so glad that he let me try it again
Cause my last time on earth I lived a whole world of sin
I’m so glad that I know more than I knew then
Gonna keep on tryin’
Till I reach my highest ground…Whew!

Till I reach my highest ground
No one’s gonna bring me down
Oh no
Till I reach my highest ground
Don’t let nobody bring you down (they’ll sho ’nuff try)
God is gonna show you higher ground
He’s the only friend you have around

A CD/DVD compilation Playing For Change: Songs Around The World was released in 2009 on the Concord Music Group label. The CD has 10 songs. The DVD has seven tracks, including video versions of five of the songs that appeared on the CD, plus a video film,The Playing for Change Foundation. The DVD also contains a three-minute trailer of the documentary film Peace Through Music.

In October 2009 an 83-minute documentary film, Peace Through Music, directed by Mark Johnson and Jonathan Walls, was released on DVD. The directors and their crew travelled the world recording and filming musicians in places such as USA, Barcelona, Ireland, the Middle East, India, Nepal, and South Africa. The film includes the clips from the CD/DVD, interviews and musical performances.

The Playing For Change website also sells the tracks in MP3 format via download, although this is limited to US customers only. The album was also released on iTunes in April 2009.

In June 2010, Playing For Change released the CD/DVD showcase “Playing For Change LIVE” as the next chapter in their journey to connect the world through music. Ten years ago, they started recording and filming musicians from across the globe and uniting them together through “Songs Around The World.”

This DVD/CD is a showcase of the first time they have ever met in person and played together on the stage. The musicians come from different countries and cultures but when the music plays, they unite as one heart for the human race. This showcase contains 19 tracks on 2 CDs.

~~Clandestino | Playing For Change | Songs Around The World~~

This song is one that touches the heart of many people who leave their countries in search of “the dream for a better life”. They come to a country where they have no legal documents, where they are considered “illegal” and all ills in that country are due to the presence of these “clandestine” human beings. They tolerate persecution, name calling and legal proceedings … and still they come.

We are excited to share another Song Around The World with all of you!

Clandestino” is a song of the people and this video represents the hearts and spirits of all those in search of a better world. We began this Playing For Change version with an Oud master in Morocco and gypsies in Budapest and then layered in bass, percussion, strings and vocals from Manu Chao and friends until it formed into a Global Roots Reggae-Latin jam around the world. United people will find their way and music is our guide.

Our newest album of Songs Around The World, featuring 185 musicians from 31 countries, will be released on June 17th! Look for a copy at any major retailer near you! Also be sure to check out the upcoming PFC Band tour dates, and be sure to visit http://www.playingforchange.com/ to explore music from around the world.
