MOTHER EARTH OVERWHELMED BY PLASTIC

It’s no surprise – we are using tons of plastic, way more than we need, and the Earth cannot digest it.

Every single piece of plastic that has been created still exists somewhere on the Earth. It is poisoning our oceans, landfills and bodies. The production of plastic goods is polluting our atmosphere, and as a result of the oil extraction process to obtain the petroleum to make the plastic, our forests are being cut down and our rivers, lakes and oceans are being polluted. When will it be enough?

The fact of the matter is, we are using more plastic now than ever before, and because it is so (seemingly) easily disposed of, most of us are completely unaware of the waste we are helping to produce, especially on a mass scale.

It is deeply unsettling that humans pick flowers to make them feel better or beautify the superficial part of their existence.

We kill a flower to momentarily bring beauty into our lives. A week passes and the flowers end up in the garbage. Most of us don’t even have the decency or common sense to return the flower to the earth.

Lupita Nyong’o lends her voice to the flower in this episode.

Beauty and scent aside, Nyong’o explains that life begins with the food flowers create. From fruit, to potatoes, to corn, to rice, the majority of our food comes from these pretty plants. “People underestimate the power of a pretty little flower,” said Nyong’o against flourishing blooms.

Designed by advertising legend Lee Clow, who co-created Apple’s seminal “1984” commercial, the Nature Is Speaking videos debuted Monday morning at the opening of the SXSW Eco conference. The initial six videos are gorgeous montages of oceans, forests, and deserts delivered alongside a message that isn’t so pretty.

EARTH

Earth, also known as “the Earth” and “the World” and sometimes referred to as the “Blue Planet”, the “Blue Marble“, Terra or “Gaia“, is the third-closest planet to the Sun, the densest planet in the Solar System, the largest of the Solar System’s four terrestrial planets and the only celestial body known to accommodate life.

It is home to millions of species, including a global population of humans, that are supported and nourished by its biosphere and minerals. The human population is grouped into around two-hundred independent sovereign states that interact, among other means, through diplomacy, conflict, travel, trade and media.

According to evidence from sources such as radiometric dating, Earth was formed around four and a half billion years ago. Within its first billion years, life appeared in its oceans and began to affect its atmosphere and surface, promoting the proliferation of aerobic as well as anaerobic organisms and causing the formation of the atmosphere’s ozone layer.

This layer and Earth’s magnetic field block the most life-threatening parts of the Sun’s radiation, so life was able to flourish on land as well as in water. Since then, Earth’s position in the Solar System, its physical properties and its geological history have allowed life to persist.

Monday’s awesome Google Doodle …. Audrey Zhang!!

An 11-year-old girl drew Monday’s awesome Google Doodle — and won a $30,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 technology grant for her New York school in the process.

Her name is Audrey Zhang, and her winning entry was chosen from more than 100,000 submissions in Google’s seventh annual Doodle 4 Google contest.

For the first time, Google designers animated her concept on the company’s homepage, where viewers will see dragons breathing fire, whales wearing top hats and winking, and much more.

Here are some closeups.

“To make the world a better place, I invented a transformative water purifier,” Zhang said in a Google statement. “It takes in dirty and polluted water from rivers, lakes, and even oceans, then massively transforms the water into clean, safe and sanitary water, when humans and animals drink this water, they will live a healthier life.”

“I came up with the design when I learned that not everyone has clean water,” she explained in an accompanying video.

Way to dream, Audrey.

For our 7th annual Doodle 4 Google competition, we asked kids K-12 to tell us what they would invent to help make the world a better place. More than 100,000 submissions, 250 state finalists, 50 state winners, and five national age group winners later, the competition has come to a close and we have a winner — 11-year old Audrey Zhang of New York.

The fifth grader told Newsday she was excited to see her work brought to life.

She attended an awards ceremony in Mountain View, Calif., last month.

Titled “Back to Mother Nature,” Zhang’s drawing features a mythical, winged water purification machine.

Doodle 4 Google program manager Liat Ben Rafael says a doodle team of animators prepared it for its homepage debut.

In Audrey’s name, Google is donating $20,000 to a charity that brings clean water and latrines to schools in Bangladesh.
