WHAT IS COQUITO?

There’s no where in the world where Christmas is celebrated as early and for so long as in Puerto Rico.

For Puerto Ricans, Christmas starts after Thanksgiving Day.

After this holiday, Christmas continues for eight days after Epiphany Day (January 6).

We call these extra eight days ‘las octavitas’.

Therefore, don’t be surprise if ‘coquito’ is already in the minds of many Puerto Ricans.

We have to get the ‘coquito’ started because it needs some time for the drink to ‘age’ a bit.

It’s a sweet, yummy eggnog-like drink with a lot of ‘punch’!

“OCTAVITAS”

(Promise, this is the last one)

Octavas and Octavitas – on January 9th (after the last of the Kings days) and last for eight days. Originally these were more religious in nature and were used to glorify the Reyes and the Christ child.

Coplas were dedicated to the Magi.

Copla: “Se fueron los Reyes con mucha alegría, vienen las octavas – Dios nos de salud para celebrarlas.”

Octavitas began right after the Octavas and were eight more days of continued adoration. These were a prelude to la Cuaresma (Lent).

IOTD” is image of the day, a concept I came up with. I teach visual meditative therapy – or in easy terms – a mini mental holiday. For some people it is very difficult for them to get their image right. I post an image a day for people to use in their mini mental vacay. Some are serious, some are silly, and some are just beautiful!”

ONE DAY AFTER THREE KINGS DAY

It’s already been said that this Christmas season is over.

In America, it’s usually done after New Year’s Eve.

Christmas trees were already in the curb the day after Christmas.

In my country, Puerto Rico. we still celebrate.

We celebrate New Years Day and Three Kings Day. After Three Kings Day, there are the “Octavitas” … eight more days where the celebration and partying continues!

This takes us into mid January.

In the spirit of this continued celebration, I give you these handsome guinea pigs as Gaspar, Balthasar, and Melchior.
