On June 12, 2016, a 29-year-old security guard, killed 49 people and wounded 58 others in a terrorist attack/hate crime inside Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, United States.

Pulse was hosting a “Latin Night” and thus most of the victims were Latinos. It was both the deadliest mass shooting by a single shooter and the deadliest incident of violence against LGBT people in United States history.

It was also the deadliest terrorist attack in the United States since the September 11 attacks in 2001.

MAINSTREAM MEDIA’S JOB

Mainstream media (MSM) is mass media that influences a large number of people and both reflects and shapes prevailing currents of thought. It may be contrasted with alternative media which may contain content with more dissenting thought.

There are less than 50 days left for the general election of this ‘great country‘.

For more than 18 months, we have been subjected to the theatrical antics of an ‘orange citizen‘, a clown of major magnitude who has opened ‘Pandora’s Box‘ and has let loose the ugliest aspects of what has been known as the ‘Ugly American‘.

Now, plenty of proven facts about the major flaws of this candidate are coming out … and I mean faster than a flooded creek.

Could it be ‘too little, too late’ to stop the ‘orange man’? 

I sure hope so.

His alternative would lead to terrible consequences that would be felt worldwide.

THE LAW OF THE LAND

A historic day which I remember very clearly.

I was sitting in my office, scrolling through Facebook when the first meme/graph related to the decision of the Supreme Court came down.

Marriage equality was the “law of the land“.

I remember thinking that this was only the beginning.

There was a lot more to get done.

This was the first step and we had many more to take.

It’s said that the longest journey starts with the first step and there we were.

Pride was all arround.

Since this momentous day, the backlash has been incredible.

As noted below many anti LGBT bills have been introduced in several states.

The culmination was the Orlando Pulse shooting which claimed the lives of 49 members of the LGBT community.

Can’t rest on our laurels, the mission continues.

#LoveWins: Celebrating One Year of Marriage Equality in America

In a historic 5-4 ruling exactly a year ago, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that bans on marriage for same-sex couples are unconstitutional, paving the way for nationwide marriage equality.

Two years prior, rulings in the historic Supreme Court cases United States v. Windsor and Hollingsworth v. Perry struck down Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act and brought marriage equality back to California, respectively, laying the groundwork for Obergefell v. Hodges to make marriage equality the law of the land in all 50 states.

In 2016 alone, more than 200 anti-LGBTQ bills have been introduced in 34 states. HRC has been on the ground fighting back against these dangerous pieces of legislation. While most have been defeated, five of those hateful bills (one in North Carolina, Tennessee and Kansas and two in Mississippi) have become law.

Tragically, those who lost their lives in the Orlando attack two weeks ago demonstrate why our battle against hatred and violence is so important to the LGBTQ community.

As we honor and celebrate this historic day, we must recommit ourselves to ending discrimination against LGBTQ people and help realize a world that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for all.

“Sunder” is finally free …. one year ago today!!

BANGALORE

Sunder, a temple elephant in Maharashtra might have been tortured for his entire life but a recording of his abuse has helped to free him.

This elephant has survived abuse that no animal should. He was chained and beaten and it would have continued if not for the launch of a massive campaign backed by international celebrities like Paul McCartney and Pamela Anderson to set him free.

He was mistreated at a temple in Maharashtra by his mahout and later abused when he was kept locked up in a poultry shed.

But Sunder has now been rescued and taken to the Bannerghatta Biological Park, outside of Bangalore. Dr Sunil Kumar, a vet who accompanied the elephant said the biggest concern was a swelling on his leg caused by years of continuous chaining.

He made the long journey of 680 kms from Kolhapur to Bangalore by road in a truck and arrived at the park.

Sunder the elephant spent years in chains, first at a temple, then outside the home of a powerful local politician.

PETA India filmed workers who beat Sunder even though he was chained and unable to move.

He wasn’t given enough food or protection from the scorching heat or monsoon rains.

Perhaps worst of all, Sunder never even saw another elephant.

But thanks to PETAIndia, all that changed. After an extensive campaign involving protests, meetings with officials, and celebrity support, the Indian Supreme Court ordered that Sunder be freed and sent to a wildlife park.

Finally, Sunder is enjoying freedom, plenty of food, and, best of all, the company of other elephants.

His new life is just beginning.
