THREE MONTHS AGO TODAY

It’s been three long months.

It seems like an eternity ago.

Tributes continue to surface.

Sia has released a song Sia featuring Kendrick Lamar.

It’s powerful.

I’m sharing it today, on the 3rd month after the Orlando tragedy.

Hoping this event doesn’t get lost amid all the current events our society is continually going through.

On June 12, 2016, a heartless man, killed 49 people and wounded 53 others in a terrorist attack/hate crime inside Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, United States.

He was shot and killed by Orlando Police Department (OPD) officers after a three-hour standoff. Pulse was hosting Latin Night and most of the victims were Latino.

It was the deadliest mass shooting by a single shooter, the deadliest incident of violence against LGBT people in United States history, and the deadliest terrorist attack in the United States since the September 11 attacks in 2001.

The Greatestis a song by Sia featuring Kendrick Lamar

The single was released on 6 September 2016 through Monkey Puzzle Records and RCA Records as the lead single from her upcoming eighth studio album, We Are Your Children. The song was written by Sia alongside Greg Kurstin, who produced the song with AJ Santos also known as Yektro.

The video for the single features dancer Maddie Ziegler, and was directed by Daniel Askill for Radical Media.

Jessica Goodman from Entertainment Weekly found the chorus “massive and catchy.” Once the critics had picked up on the song’s connection with the 2016 Orlando nightclub shooting, Spencer Kornhaber of The Atlantic wrote:

Making pop about a specific tragedy is necessarily a tricky job. So it’s no crime that some of the other mainstream original songs memorializing Orlando have been as rote as issue-oriented singles are often stereotyped as being. But “The Greatest” is very potent, a work of art, not charity. There’s no break here from the rest of Sia’s catalogue about pain and release in everyday life: You hear a sad voice wailing about bucking up, very stark emotional peaks and valleys, and a danceable backing of explosive drums, toy-box melodies, and reggae grooves.

Sia and Greg Kurstin may have written the song even before the massacre. But in the context of Orlando, the possible platitude of the chorus becomes gutting:

“I’m free to be the greatest/I’m alive.”

She’s pepping the listener up, but she’s also defining the value of life, marking the human potential that’s been lost.

To start the day …. Karen Long: “My Cancer made me a Fighter”!!

KAREN LONG: ORLANDO POLICE DEPARTMENT

Almost to the year, on October 4, 2014, I posted information about this local police officer.

At the time, the city of Orlando, presented Officer Karen Long with a pink patrol car to honor her fight with cancer & in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Just last night, I learned through my daughter-in-law, whose husband is an OPD officer, that Karen Long had lost her battle with breast cancer.

Oddly, as many things in life, as we know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

May she rest in peace and may he family be comforted through this major loss.

Karen Long, OPD officer died after fight with cancer

After a hard-fought battle with breast cancer, longtime Orlando Police officer Karen Long died Saturday, October 10, 2015,  with her family by her side.

Long, 41, was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer in 2007.

“Rest in peace our beloved Karen,” the Orlando Police Department wrote on its Twitter page. “Our hearts are heavy. You were a true hero to us all.”

Doctors caught the disease early, as it hadn’t spread to any other parts of Long’s body in 2007. She scheduled a double mastectomy and underwent chemotherapy to fight the disease.
After two years in remission, Long found out that the cancer returned in December 2014.

In a March 2015 article, Long told the Orlando Sentinel she had Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. The disease had spread to her lungs.

“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t scared sometimes,” Long said at the time.

“When somebody tells you, ‘You are terminal,’ you live differently … Yes, I have cancer.

Yes, it’s Stage 4.

But I’m not going to let it define who I am and I’m not going to feel sorry for myself.”

On Saturday, October 10, 2015, family and friends wrote loving messages on Long’s personal blog on Facebook, called Turning Up the Heat for Karen.

“As Karen’s sister said, “The only thing that died today was cancer,” one post said.

Long worked for OPD since 2000. During her tenure, she was a patrol officer, worked on the Special Victims Unit, and a school resource officer. She last worked as a Master Police Officer in OPD’s Community Involvement Division.
