TWENTY YEARS AGO

20th Anniversary of Ellen Degeneres Coming Out

I remember as if it was yesterday.

I watched Ellen’s sitcom religiously.

I followed all her antics and was waiting for that one episode.

I was with you, I’m still with you and will always be with you, Ellen.

Thank you!!

YEP I’M GAY

Did you expect it to turn into all of this?,” Oprah Winfrey asked Ellen DeGeneres on an episode of her talk show that aired on the afternoon of April 30, 1997.

Two weeks earlier, a Time cover had debuted, featuring DeGeneres and the instantly famous words “Yep, I’m Gay.”

On April 25, DeGeneres spoke to Diane Sawyer on 20/20 and said, “I decided this was not going to be something that I was going to live the rest of my life being ashamed of.”

Hours after the Oprah interview aired, DeGeneres’s charismatic bookstore owner character, Ellen Morgan, followed suit, coming out as gay in a one-hour, two-part episode of her sitcom Ellen. “The Puppy Episode” was watched by an estimated 44 million people, nearly three times the show’s usual ratings.

It’s been 20 years since that April.

DeGeneres has hosted her own daytime talk show, also called Ellen, for nearly 14 years. She’s hosted the Oscars, won the Presidential Medal of Freedom, starred in two blockbuster cartoons, and all the while lived openly as a gay woman.

Ellen DeGeneres Dances in the Street – Watch the Host’s Oscars Trailer!

Ellen was born to dance!

On Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013, the charming Oscars trailer featuring 2014’s host debuted online.

Directed by Bridesmaids’ Paul Feig, it begins with the daytime talk show host adjusting her bow tie and lacing her sneakers. DeGeneres then hits the streets to pantomime “The Walker” by Fitz & the Tantrums—all while showing off her best dance moves, of course.

Before long, 250 tuxedo-clad backup dancers join DeGeneres on the Warner Bros. studio lot. So You Think You Can Dance’s Stephen “tWitch” Boss choreographed the group number.

“Paul Feig has a reputation of being hilarious and nice and smart,” the comedienne said in a behind-the-scenes video.

“I thought this is a great idea and I loved it. And I want to be in Bridesmaids 2, so 2+2: great Oscars promo, Bridesmaids 2, cha-ching.”

“I had the best time making this,” DeGeneres added. “I love Paul, I love tWitch, I love Fitz and I like most of the Tantrums.”

Feig, who became an official Academy Awards member this year, then explained the concept of the trailer.

“Ellen’s so great. She’s of the people. And I wanted the message to be basically that everyone gets to go to the Oscars this year,” he said.

“I’m a huge fan of Ellen’s. I love what she does and I love the way she does it, the persona she puts forward and the way that she treats people and the causes that she supports.”

At the end of the day …. “It’s Ellen’s Birthday …. today”!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ELLEN

I am very partial to Ellen! I must confess that. I have been a faithful follower since she started her stand up comedy, her own sitcom, her “coming out” episode and her current TV show.

She truly is one exceptional human being.

We need more like her.

At the risk of making a grand proclamation, there are very few people who are generally agreed upon as being universally beloved.

Nevertheless, it’s safe to say that Ellen DeGeneres is one of them. We won’t venture a guess as to any of the others, because that would mean stepping into far murkier and controversial territory. Ellen, however, is a sure bet.

It’s not just the delightful dancing or viral Oscar selfies, nor is it the pranks that she pulls both with and on celebrities like Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez.

DeGeneres was making history even before most of America knew her as an extremely successful syndicated talk-show host. She was the first woman ever called to the couch to sit down on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson when she appeared to do stand-up in November 1986. She came out publicly on her eponymous sitcom in 1997.

She’s hosted the Emmys and the Oscars and is a spokesperson for CoverGirl.

Oh, and did you know that Ellen even has one of those National Days, like National Pecan Pie Day or National Hug Day?

That’s right; January 26 — which is also DeGeneres’ birthday — has been declared National Ellen DeGeneres Day.

If that’s not a sign of universal belovedness, we’re not quite sure what is. They don’t just hand out those days to anyone or anything. You have to be a type of baked good, an adorable furry creature, or an intimate action.

WHO DOESN’T KNOW THIS?

Ellen Lee DeGeneres (born January 26, 1958) is an American comedian, television host, actress, writer, and producer. She starred in the popular sitcom Ellen from 1994 to 1998, and has hosted her syndicated TV talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, since 2003.

Her stand-up career started in the early 1980’s, culminating in a 1986 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Carson likened her to Bob Newhart, and invited her for an onscreen chat after her set. DeGeneres was the first female comedian invited by the iconic host to join him for such a discussion, at a time when such an invitation was widely regarded as one of the most influential endorsements available for a comic.

As a film actress, DeGeneres starred in Mr. Wrong (1996), appeared in EDtv (1999), and The Love Letter (1999), and provided the voice of Dory in the Pixar animated film Finding Nemo (2003), for which she was awarded the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress, the first time an actress won a Saturn Award for a voice performance.
