THE PIANO GUYS AND ME

Those who have followed this blog must be aware that I have always been an ardent fan of The Piano Guys and their awesome music.

I have blogged plenty about them.

I have all their CDs. I have their sheet music.

I have some of their merchandise.

‘We haven’t changed who we are, what we stand for, or what our music means and why we write it.’

Yes, you have changed!

You have normalized something that is totally and completely wrong!

I’ve read your full statement. I respect your reasons and your decision. However, I can no longer follow you. I’ve enjoyed your music! I’ve been thrilled by your videos. I have shared all knowledge I posses about you. I’ve been on of your most ardent fans. In spite of your reasons, I’m very disappointed that you have decided to participate. It’s a real sad decision for me to ‘disconnect’ from you and your music.
Your music, your beliefs … are so elevated.

I really am very saddened by your decision.

“It brought tears to my eyes.”

Therefore, we part ways today!

The Piano Guys
Last night as I was kissing my daughter good night she asked me in an innocent, but tentative tone, “Daddy, why are people mad at you?

It brought tears to my eyes.

I told her that I wish I could gather up everyone angry with the Piano Guys one by one and talk with them face to face. Hear their story. Empathize with their concerns, and mourn together so we could comfort each other. We, too, are distraught and despondent over how divisive this chapter in our nation’s politics has been. We, too, want what’s best for everyone in this country. Those of you who know us, know we grew up as “nerdy” musicians and we experienced bullying firsthand.

We abhor and decry bullying.

pgu4

You know that we honor our relationships with our spouses more than anything else. You know we believe women are Divinely appointed to not only equality, but also respect and chivalrous deference. You know that in our history our ancestors were refugees, driven from their homes in fear for their lives. We emphatically embrace those now in the same situation. You know we believe in loving all people, regardless of gender, race, political affiliation, country of origin, or religious background.

You know we believe that differences are meant to be celebrated, not calculated.

If you know our music, you know that we painstakingly, prayerfully write and perform it with the intention to give it the greatest potential to lift others and break down barriers, not build them.

Many have asked why we are performing at the Inauguration.

blineebrbline

To our friends who have felt disturbed by our involvement, we want you to know that this doesn’t lessen our gratitude for what you have done for us. Not one bit. We still feel indebted to you. We love you. You give our music wings! We sincerely hope and pray for your understanding. We don’t feel right limiting our positive message only to people that believe or act the same way we do. We haven’t changed our message. We haven’t changed who we are, what we stand for, or what our music means and why we write it. We’re still doing what we’ve always done – playing for anyone who will hear our musical message with the hope that it persuades its listeners to love others.

THIS IS YOUR FIGHT SONG …. AMAZING GRACE

Piano Guys combine ‘Fight Song,’ ‘Amazing Grace’ in unlikely Scottish mashup

By Alex Johnson, Deseret News

Published: Friday, Oct. 30 2015

The Christian hymn “Amazing Grace” and Rachel Platten’s contemporary hit “Fight Song” may seem like an unlikely pair, but the two songs have one thing in common: a message of hope.

Although the The Piano Guys are known for playing entertaining and uplifting music in unusual locations, their latest video isn’t just fun to watch. The group combined the songs “Amazing Grace,” “Fight Song” and short interludes from “Scotland The Brave” to create an anthem of strength.

“This song and video for us was a struggle but a beautifully defining one,” according to the video’s description.

P14

“We all struggle.

Not in the same way, nor at the same level, but we all want a fighting chance,” The Piano Guys wrote.

“And we all share in one gift: the will to make the most of our lives.

To take what we’ve been given and turn it into something better could be considered the sentient measuring stick of success.

But to do so seldom is simple and more often requires we fight.

Not against each other.

But against the current threatening to drown the ambition in us.”

The video was filmed at the Eilean Donan Castle in Dornie, Scotland, where the group collaborated with members of the Wasatch and District Pipe Band.

~This is Your Fight Song~

Rachel Platten Scottish Cover

~Published on Oct 29, 2015~

Meaning/Story behind the song

When we first heard Rachel Platten’s “Fight Song” we were inspired by its message. In a world where we too often talk about our differences, we have at least one thing in common. We all struggle. Not in the same way, nor at the same level, but we all want a fighting chance. And we all share in one gift: The will to make the most of our lives. To take what we’ve been given and turn it into something better could be considered the sentient measuring stick of success. But to do so seldom is simple and more often requires we fight. Not against each other. But against the current threatening to drown the ambition in us.

There is tremendous purpose in struggle.

It is when the struggle becomes so fierce that we must fight to swim or sink. John Newton, who penned “Amazing Grace,” worked on a slave trader ship and condoned inhuman atrocities. As his ship was on the verge of being torn apart in a violent storm he called out for Grace. Once his feet were again planted on firm soil he determined to change. His covenant was written into these words,

“I once was lost, but now I’m found; was blind, but now I see.”

Grace is the defining moment when we face and fight a monster poised to define us or destroy us.

This song and video for us was a struggle, but a beautifully defining one. We chose the Scottish culture to depict the dichotomy between Grace and struggle. Who else is tough enough and yet delicate enough to don a kilt in battle? And the Scottish pipe and drum are the ultimate conveyors of melody and cadence. One represents Grace, the other the indomitable fight.

Our dream was to film one of the most iconic castles on the Earth, Eilean Donan Castle in Dornie, Scotland.

Grace somehow made this video possible. We had to postpone our trip to Scotland several times, and when we could no longer postpone we had to leap in faith because just before we left everything had fallen through. It wasn’t until we were in the moment and had to let go of our pride and anxiety when everything Gracefully came together.

We recognize that this video is far less important than a fight for one’s life. We hope this music will serve as an anthem for those that are in the fight of their lives. We have people close to us who inspire us every day with their grace in the face of such a struggle.

This video is dedicated to them.

The superheroes in our lives that don’t wear capes, but wear a smile under villainous pressure — those that have been through so many defining moments that they are intimately acquainted with Grace and know it to be close cousins with hope. We pray “Grace will bring them safety through.”

SKY FULL OF STARS

The Piano Guys just released their most recent video today.

I’ve been following these musicians since I first heard of them through very my very dear friends Susan and Grant.

I’ve posted many of their YouTube videos in this blog.

I was lucky to see them perform live in Melbourne, Florida.

I think they are amazing.

Their musical talent combined with the awesome photography, videography and the team effort that shows through in their work is worth of the current worldwide acclaim and fame they have acquired.

In person, they are quite down to earth and genuine.

I didn’t know this story about how they started.

They shared it on their official website.

I would like to share it with you.

Hope you enjoy.

It was 2011.

Late in the year. What started as a small town ambition to sell pianos through social media had shown some promise as a standalone YouTube music video channel. We had a few videos under our belts. We had a handful of subscribers. We were building steam. We were loving it!

But one looming, sour-faced, obstinate obstacle stood in the way.

Reality.

PG

How could we sustain this? How could we keep this pace?

We had robbed too much time away from family, day jobs; we were living two lives — nocturnal and diurnal — in an attempt to write music and film videos in every spare second.

Our day jobs, including the Piano Store itself, saw a sharp decline due to negligence.

Reality hit. It hit hard.

Our music videos were not providing near enough to provide for our families, our number one priority.

They say that the only difference between a large pizza and a professional musician is that a large pizza can feed a family of four!

So we hatched this crazy idea.

P14

What if our genesis, as official full-time “Piano Guys,” could be “crowd funded?”

What if we offered special packages to people in exchange for their support to help us get our wheels off the ground? We launched the “Founders” program. We were cautious in our optimism, but we were completely overwhelmed. The generous support of so many people gave us the wings we needed. And it gave us a boost in confidence, enthusiasm, and commitment to the people listening and watching.

Now here we are. Over fifty videos with 700 million views, four million YouTube subscribers, a million Facebook fans, and four albums with Sony. We’ve sold out shows in the U.S., Mexico, China, Germany, Canada, Singapore, Hungary, Austria, England, Scotland, France, Korea, Turkey, Russia, Brazil, and Japan. And best of all, our families haven’t starved! All because of our Founders. Had it not been for your support and faith in us, we would not be The Piano Guys today.

If you’re a Founder, you know that we do all we can to ensure that our music videos are not just a “product.” We put everything we’ve got into them. All of who we are. There is a spiritual component to them. We try to “break the mold” with them. We want something on the internet that grandparents, parents, and children can enjoy. Together. Our mission has always been to lift people with what we do. Prompt a smile. Hope. Encouragement to keep practicing or to take up an instrument! A moment of escape from a world that can all too often peddle darkness on us. Life is made up of moments. Small things snowball into great things. We wanted to do something small that could help someone to be great. And if all we did was help one person it would have been worth it.

PG11

Because of you, we’ve reached people that we couldn’t dream of reaching. Many of these people have talked to us at our concerts, posted on our walls, messaged and emailed us with their stories. They are inspiring. They are miraculous. They are stories of people rekindling long lost relationships, surmounting mountainous challenges, finding meaning in life, chasing out life’s “demons,” starting and excelling at an instrument, reconnecting with God, or being emboldened in a career choice.

They are your stories. You made them happen. Thank you from all of these good people, whose souls’ worth is incalculable. Thank you from our spouses. Our children. Thank you from the bottom of everything we have and everything we aspire to be. You remain our inspiration.

Our benefactors. Our Founders.

We love you.

Please accept this video as a very small token of our appreciation for you.

Your names are printed on what we now affectionately call our “Founders’ Piano” and “Founders’ Cello!

For your video we put together an arrangement of a super cool tune called, “A Sky Full of Stars,” by Coldplay, because we feel like the REAL stars of the Piano Guys are our Founders.

As we were writing and recording this we prayed that we could pour our sincere gratitude into each and every measure.

After we finished with the music we determined to film in a place you may recognize, the Salt Flats where we filmed “Moonlight.” What better venue than a place of our “roots” and where your names would be the “stars” of the film, starkly contrasted against the eternal white salt stretching as far as the eye can see?

I’m so excited. I was so lucky to see The Piano Guys in concert last night at The Kings Performance Art Center in Melbourne, Florida. It was a dream come true … ever since I was introduced to them by some dear friends I’ve become an ardent fan.

Last night was a wonderful experience. It was what I expected and more.

Jon Schmidt and Steven Sharp Nelson where the front men during most of the concert.  Paul Anderson and Al van der Beek graced us with their presence and the talent in the last song “Marching Ants” and the encore “What Makes You Beautiful”.

They were witty, down to earth, approachable, down to earth and, of course, very talented!  Now, if possible I enjoy and love their music even more.

~Angels We Have Heard on High (Christmas w/ 32 fingers and 8 thumbs)~

ThePianoGuys

~~Published on Nov 29, 2013~~

We wanted this to be a fun music video full of “Christmas Spirit.” While the video primarily presents the “fun” side of Christmas (complete with cameo appearances by Christmas icons which “helped” us film), we wanted the music to portray what, to us, is the true meaning of the Holiday season. As we wrote it we imagined the “shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.” And how the Angel appeared to them, announcing the humble birth of the Savior of the World. How incredible it would have been when, “suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men!” (Holy Bible, Luke Chapter 2)

We wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. We love you!

At the end of the day …. The Piano Guys: “The Mission”!!

~November 12, 2014~~

Set in Brazil with the incredible backdrop of Christ the Redeemer and the Iguazu Falls, The Piano Guys combine the melody of the heartfelt hymn of praise “How Great Thou Art” with one of the most beautiful melodies ever written – the theme from the movie “The Mission“.

PG11

Only one month after their cover of Disney’s Frozen made a splash on YouTube, the Piano Guys have revealed the latest in their line of unique cover versions – this time, a religious pairing of the well-known hymn, How Great Thou Art, masterfully woven with Morricone’s poignant oboe tune from The Mission.

Following their video filmed on the Great Wall of China, the duo have now taken their music to Brazil as part of their quest to perform at all seven Wonders of the World. This time, the pair are performing near the Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil, in front of the 275 waterfalls that make up the Iguazu Falls.

It was not too long after that they did their first collaboration with Jon Schmidt, Steven Sharp Nelson, and Al Van Der Beek as the studio and music technician. After the five of them started collaborating the group really started to take off, producing a music video each week and posting it to YouTube.

~~The Mission/How Great Thou Art~~

Wonder of The World 2 of 7

~~Published on Apr 2, 2014~~

Story behind the video & song

We’ve set an ambitious goal to film in front of all Seven Wonders of the World. We started with the Great Wall of China.
As our tour of Brazil approached we set our sights on our next Wonder: Christ the Redeemer. This incredible piece of art soars 10 stories in the air, stretches 100 feet wide and weighs 1.4 million pounds (630,000 kg). But even more impressive is that it was built in the 1920’s on a peak of a sheer 2,300 ft. (700 meter) cliff overlooking Rio de Janeiro.

Not far from this inspiring statue are the Iguazu Falls — a natural Wonder of the World. Made up of 275 waterfalls that stretch across 1.7 miles (2.7 km), to match the amount of water that flows down these falls you would need 2 million people to each pour a quart of water every second.

As we considered what piece of music would be worthy of such incomparable locations we looked to songs that have been composed or used to praise Jesus Christ, for whom the statue was built and who billions believe created all the natural wonders of this world. We wanted to combine the melody of the heartfelt hymn of praise “How Great Thou Art” with one of the most beautiful melodies ever written — the theme from the movie “The Mission” (“Gabriel’s Oboe.”) “The Mission” is a movie that powerfully depicts the lives of men that lay down their lives for others. It was also filmed at Iguazu Falls. “How Great Thou Art” praises God and all that He has done for His children on this Earth. The two harmonize so beautifully with each other, both musically and thematically. As we played these pieces in front of the Christ Statue and Iguazu Falls we felt an overwhelming sense of wonder, peace, and joy.

This music video is not meant to exclude anyone that does not believe in God. We hope that it instead promotes spiritual feelings that can be felt by all — gratitude for a beautiful Earth, for life, and for joy.

A wise man once said, “If we thought of life as a gift, we might not demand nearly as much from it. And if we lived more graciously, giving of ourselves more freely to the well-being of others, many of our personal concerns would disappear, and life would become easier for all.”

We respect all beliefs and opinions, but we hope that in the comments everyone can set aside religious differences and instead focus on building each other up — through gratitude, inspiration, kindness and mutual respect.

Thank you so much for watching! We are grateful for you!

At the end of the day …. The Piano Guys: “Don’t You Worry Child”!!

~~October 27, 2014~~

What do you get when you mix up a marketing genius that does video, a studio engineer that writes music, a pianist that had a successful solo career, and a cellist that does pretty much everything? The Piano Guys: a miraculous meeting of “guys” with the same intrinsic purpose – to make a positive impact in the lives of people all over the world through music videos.

It all started in a piano store in a little town in Southern Utah called St. George. Paul Anderson, the store owner, was looking for a new, unconventional way to market pianos. The name of the store? The Piano Guys.

… and the rest is history!

Story behind the music and the video
While shooting our video “Lord of the Rings” Steve’s steel cello was damaged. When we reattached the fingerboard the strings were too close to the surface and this caused a buzzing sound when plucked. The Sitello was born — a cross between an Indian sitar and a cello. This sparked an idea. We love incorporating ethnicity into our arrangements ….

We’d like to thank the Sri Sri Radha Krsna Temple for letting us film there — learn more about their temple here: http://www.utahkrishnas.org/
We’d also like to thank Troy Tasker and Shaun Jeffery for helping us scout out the Little Sahara Dunes and Bryce Payne for loaning us his trailer to make it possible!

The Piano Guys are at it again. Their new CD is coming out early in October 2014. It’s titles “Wonders”. I have already pre-ordered mine. I’m such a fan.

I’m taken by Steven’s joy and big smile while playing any of the many cellos he has. Jon has fast moving fingers, showing a dexterity on the piano keys that is beyond comprehension.

These guys look like they are having the time of their lives. Their joy and enthusiasm is infectious.

This many be one of the many reasons why I like and enjoy their music and talents so much.

The song is a medley of Batman anthems from over 50 years, including the theme song from the 1966 Batman television series, Danny Elfman’s theme from the 1989 Batman film, and Hans Zimmer’s score from The Dark Knight Trilogy.

1966, 1989, 2005

In the video, each theme is played in front of a replica Batmobile from their respective show or film.

Story behind the song

Holy hemiola, Batman! 50 years of music and film all rolled together in front of the cars that have become icons of super hero history. This is one of those projects we’ve wanted to do from the very beginning of The Piano Guys.

We love super heroes, the dramatic music that has brought them to life, and the vivid films that have made them legends. We used piano, cello, handheld cameras, a radio controlled helicopter, and some scrappy special effect techniques in the most creative ways possible to emulate the three epic eras of one of the greatest super heroes ever created: BATMAN!

One of our favorite little surprises on the album is a track called, “Batman: Evolution” – an epic mash-up of all three Batman themes (from the 60’s TV show, the ’89 “Keaton” movies, and the current “Dark Knight” trilogy). We’re filming the video this week. And for the first time in history ALL THREE BATMOBILES from each of these eras will be in the same video! Holy hot wheels, Batman!

The 8-yr old kid in each of us is doing back handsprings! Be sure to stay tuned! And in the meantime please PRE-ORDER our new album!

~~LYRICS~~

Heart beats fast
Colors and promises
How to be brave
How can I love when I’m afraid
To fall
But watching you stand alone
All of my doubt
Suddenly goes away somehow

One step closer

(Chorus)
I have died every day
waiting for you
Darlin’ don’t be afraid
I have loved you for a
Thousand years
I’ll love you for a
Thousand more

(Verse 2)
Time stands still
beauty in all she is
I will be brave
I will not let anything
Take away
What’s standing in front of me
Every breath,
Every hour has come to this

One step closer

(Chorus)
I have died every day
Waiting for you
Darlin’ don’t be afraid
I have loved you for a
Thousand years
I’ll love you for a
Thousand more

And all along I believed
I would find you
Time has brought
Your heart to me
I have loved you for a
Thousand years
I’ll love you for a
Thousand more

One step closer
One step closer

(Chorus)
I have died every day
Waiting for you
Darlin’ don’t be afraid,
I have loved you for a
Thousand years
I’ll love you for a
Thousand more

And all along I believed
I would find you
Time has brought
Your heart to me
I have loved you for a
Thousand years
I’ll love you for a
Thousand more

~Story behind the song~

Our kids give us great inspiration for our music.

When Jon’s 17 year
old daughter said how much she loved this song, Jon decided to try it.
He experienced a flood of inspiration. “Never has a piano part come
together this fast” Jon says. Steve experienced similar inspiration
while composing the cello parts. Since the lyrics suggest a bride
walking towards the groom in a ceremony we thought we would include a
quote from the Bridal Chorus by Wagner in the climax of the song.
(It is carefully disguised).
