I was born and raised in the island of Puerto Rico

~~I grew up under the influence of the United States~~

It was my most ardent desire to live in the mainland.

I’ve been in Florida since 1999.

Many things have changed in my life, in my surroundings, in this country.

My mind, heart and soul have gone back to my home, my country.

We traveled looking for a new place and it seems that we may have found it.

TRAVELING TO MY COUNTRY

~Both of us were born in Puerto Rico~

Life throws plenty curve balls and both of us ended up living in Florida. We have made it an event and traveled to Puerto Rico at least once a year.

Last year’s trip was abruptly interrupted by Hurricane María. Almost 9 months went by before we were able to go back home.

Initially, we wanted to say away from the issues on the Island mostly to avoid interrupting rescue efforts. We didn’t want to be in the way of people’s needs, first responders, rescuers and workers.

There was no power (power hasn’t restored fully yet, as of this writing), the roads were impassable, communications were very limited. Rather than be in the way, we waited until some degree of normalcy had been attained in the Island.

We embarked on our trip on May 18 and returned May 29, 2018.

This is the longest we have been away from the home base in Florida.

~This trip had a two-fold Purpose~

We wanted to go back and see what Hurricane María had done to our piece of paradise.

My high school was celebrating our 50th graduation anniversary and we had never met before!!

Off we went.

I would like to share some photos with you. I will do so in parts … for ease of posting and to separate the areas that we visited. I hope you enjoy them!

~We flew with JetBlue from Orlando to San Juan~

Once we arrived at the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, we had another leg to go. I knew that we were getting on a smaller plane … I called it a ‘kite’, ‘puddle jumper’.

An airport employee called it a ‘mosquito’.

I wasn’t expecting such a small plane!

Yet, here we were. The plane holds only 9 passengers. All the weight it taken into account. That includes your bags and every person’s who is on board.

O-M-G!! 

Then again, I realized I was concerned more than needed. The flight went surprisingly well in spite of the fact that there were plenty clouds and there was a rain spell locally.

Located on the west coast of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez is home to historical sites, nature and wildlife preserves, and several colleges and universities.

HONORING PUERTO RICO

Some of you may know, others not.

I am a fan of tattoos, having a few of them myself.

I’m also Puerto Rican, born and raised, living in the mainland.

Since September 20, 2017, when Hurricane María battered and almost flattened my country, my personal feelings have come to the surface.

My heart and soul ache for Puerto Rico.

Yesterday, I visited my tattoo artist.

I had an idea in my mind but Stacy showed me her idea and this is what she came up with.

I instantly fell in love with this image.

This is a proud Boricua woman, holding her head up high, ready to hold her stand and give the good fight. This happens in Puerto Rico every minute of every day.

The fortitude of the Puerto Rican woman has been tested during the trying times since the hurricane. 

There are still some details and colors to be added to the artwork.

I wanted to share this with you today.

 More will follow when completed.

Today is the 121st day after Hurricane María battered Puerto Rico.

Two weeks before, 14 days, Irma grazed the island leaving one million of people without power.
