On this rainy day, Angelika, my oldest grand-daughter, got out of school a noon.

We’ve been meaning to do something together.

This movie was on our “must see” list.

Off we went and we had a great time.

We both loved the movie.

Kubo and the Two Strings is a 2016 American 3D stop-motion fantasy action adventure film, directed by Travis Knight, written by Marc Haimes and Chris Butler, and produced by Laika.

The film features the voices of Art Parkinson, Charlize Theron, Matthew McConaughey, Ralph Fiennes, Rooney Mara and George Takei.

~PLOT~

In ancient Japan, Kubo (Art Parkinson) is a young boy who lives with his ill mother, Sariatu (Charlize Theron), in a cave on top of a mountain. Every day he goes out to a nearby village to tell stories by manipulating pieces of paper that form into origami that moves under music played from Kubo’s shamisen.

He tells tales of great warriors seeking revenge while battling monsters, primarily of a samurai warrior named Hanzo, who is Kubo’s missing father. Every day he quickly returns to his mother when the town bell chimes signaling sunset. She instructs him not to stay outside after dark or her Sisters (his aunts) and his grandfather, the Moon King, will come to take his remaining eye, as they took the other when he was a baby.

One day, Kubo learns of a ceremony where family members communicate with deceased loved ones (Obon). He arrives at a cemetery and tries to speak to his father, but he leaves in anger when his father does not respond to him. Because Kubo has stayed outside after sundown, his mother’s Sisters (Rooney Mara) find him and try to take his eye. After they destroy the village, his mother arrives to fend off her Sisters.

His mother sends Kubo away by touching a beetle crest on his robe which gives him wings, forcing him to fly away from his mother. She tells him to find his father’s armor in order to protect Kubo from his grandfather’s evil spirits. He takes a piece of her hair before she is seemingly killed by her Sisters.

Upon his return to the village, he is able to reclaim the helmet and puts it on. He is greeted by Raiden (Ralph Fiennes), the ghost that appeared to Kubo in his dream. Raiden is revealed to be his grandfather, the Moon King. The Moon King, who needs Kubo’s eye to rid Kubo of all his powers and memories, transforms into the “Moon Beast” and fights Kubo. Kubo is defeated and tossed into the cemetery where the Moon King corners him as well as the surviving villagers.

Kubo retaliates by taking off the armor and repairs his shamisen using the hair of his mother, his father’s bowstring, and one of his own hairs. He uses its magic to recruit the spirits of the villagers’ deceased, showing that memories are the strongest form of magic and can never be destroyed. The Moon King is defeated and becomes mortal, and in his human form has no recollection of who or what he was.

The villagers make him believe that he is a good man. After the villagers set their lanterns near a lake, Kubo is able to speak with his parents and make peace with them, saying that he is happy he was able to go on a journey with them.

They then appear beside him in the form of spirits.

LA LUNA

La Luna, (Italian for The Moon) is a 2011 Pixar computer-animated short film, directed and written by Enrico Casarosa.

The short premiered on June 6, 2011 at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in France, and was paired with Pixar’s Brave for its theatrical release on June 22, 2012, being shown before the film’s beginning. La Luna was released on November 13, 2012, on the Brave DVD and Blu-ray, and on a new Pixar Short Films Collection, Volume 2, the second collection of Pixar’s short films. La Luna was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film at the 84th Academy Awards.

PLOT

A young boy, Bambino, goes on a midnight sailing trip with his father Papà and grandfather Nonno. After they anchor their boat in the middle of the sea, Nonno presents Bambino with a cap similar to the ones he and Papà wear. The two men disagree on how Bambino should wear it, with Papà pulling it low over his eyes and Nonno pushing it back on his head. Papà sets up a long ladder for Bambino to climb so he can set the boat’s anchor on the full moon, and the three ascend to start their work of sweeping fallen stars off the lunar surface.

Papà urges Bambino to use a pushbroom on the stars, while Nonno favors a besom broom. As they quarrel, a huge star crashes down on the moon; it is far too large for any of them to move by themselves.

Turning his cap backwards, the way he wants to wear it, Bambino climbs onto the star and taps it with a hammer. It bursts apart into hundreds of smaller stars, and all three go to work sweeping them to one side, with Bambino choosing a rake instead of either man’s broom.

Once the job is done, they climb back down into their boat and look up at the moon, which now displays a glowing crescent phase thanks to their efforts.

RICKI AND THE FLASH

What can I say? I love this woman.

Meryl Streep is one of the most talented and consistent stars out there.

She’s one of my favorites.

I’ll see her in every production she is featured in.

I love to watch all her different talents.

I went to see Ricki and The Flash yesterday.

It wasn’t an outstanding production but Meryl was in it and I enjoyed it terribly.

The music was very good.

I’m ordering the soundtrack.

PLOT

Ricki chased her dreams of becoming a famous rock star by abandoning her family.

She gets a chance to put things right when her ex-husband Pete asks her to visit Indianapolis and help their estranged daughter Julie through a difficult time.

Ricki has a rock band that plays a regular gig at a small bar, when she isn’t working as a cashier to make ends meet. Julie recently attempted suicide because her husband cheated on her and is divorcing her.

Despite being broke, Ricki comes to Indianapolis to help her daughter, but Julie is hostile. Likewise, her two sons are hostile and unwelcoming. One is gay and the other recently became engaged, though no one told their mother. Still, Ricki gets through to Julie.

Unfortunately, her husband’s second wife, Maureen, returns unexpectedly, confronting Ricki with some hard truths. She wasn’t there for her children when they needed her and Maureen was. Ashamed, Ricki returns to her band in California angry and bitter, insulting her guitarist who is in love with her. He makes her realize he cares and they make love. Maureen sends Ricki an invitation to the son’s wedding as an olive branch, but Ricki can’t afford to go. Her boyfriend sells his best guitar to pay for the tickets. Despite her attempts at reconciliation, it’s clear she’s still an outsider.

The wedding guests look askance at Ricki when she gets up to toast the bride and groom. As her gift, having no money, she has her band take over and play for the guests.

Her son and his bride start the wedding dance and slowly the guests join in.

Where Babies Come From

The storks delivering babies are feverishly at work. The babies are made by the clouds. They are enveloped in a bag made of fluffy cloud material. Each stork has an assigned cloud.

There’s one cloud in particular who is very happy with her job but she creates the babies that may be a bit troublesome for the carrier stork.

The stork assigned to this “gray” cloud has had a few close calls.

Still the stork carries on.

She does the best she can and comes up with an idea for self-protection.

Partly Cloudy is a Pixar CGI animated short film written and directed by Peter Sohn and produced by Kevin Reher. It was shown in theaters before Pixar’s feature film Up and is a special feature on its DVD and Blu-ray release.

PLOT

All day long, cheerful clouds in the sky make cute and cuddly babies, such as human boys and girls, kittens, puppies, and other creatures, and give them to storks for delivery to the expectant parents.

However, one lonely gray cloud named Gus has the task of creating animals that are cute but not so cuddly.

His delivery stork, Peck, gets the worst of it, being bitten by a crocodile, butted by a bighorn sheep, and pricked by a porcupine.

When Peck sees that his next delivery is a baby shark, he grows more than a little fearful and flies away.

Feeling rejected, despondent, and angry, Gus unleashes a brief thunderstorm, then starts crying with rain pouring from below him. Peck, however, soon returns with a football helmet and shoulder pads, created for him by another cloud to keep him safe (alluded to in an earlier scene, where the same cloud creates a baby that would grow to love football).

Gus instantly cheers up and gives Peck an electric eel to deliver, which shocks him despite the protective equipment; this time, though, Peck remains in good (but slightly frazzled) spirits.

Movie Time …. “Minions …. Finally Saw It”!!

Minions is a 2015 3D computer-animated family comedy film, and a prequel/spin-off to the Despicable Me franchise. Produced by Illumination Entertainment for Universal Pictures, it was directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda, written by Brian Lynch, and produced by Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy.

The film stars Coffin (as the Minions), Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Allison Janney, Steve Coogan, and narrated by Geoffrey Rush.

It was first foreshadowed in the end credits of Despicable Me 2, where Stuart, Kevin, and Bob, three of the Minions, are seen auditioning for the film.

I’m a senior citizen, as some of you may know. I’m a staunch movie fan. I’ve been waiting to see this movie since it started in early July.

I finally saw it today.

I enjoyed it very much. I sometimes think these movies are “wasted” on kids because many situations are based on facts that actually happened. The movie basically takes place in 1968. I graduated from high school in 1968. Many of the references are right on to occurrences in “my time” .. the minions walking as the Beatles did at the crosswalk.

The music was the perfect choice for those years too.

“Critical response was mixed: some critics praised the comedic aspects of the film, while others felt that the titular characters were not able to carry the film on their own, and also focused on the flat characterizations of the film’s villains. The film has grossed over $912 million worldwide.”

My opinion … awesome. Loved it!

~PLOT~

Minions are small, yellow creatures who have existed since the beginning of time, evolving from single-celled organisms into beings who exist only to serve history’s most villainous masters. They find great masters — including a T. Rex, a caveman, an Egyptian pharaoh, Dracula, and Napoleon but after accidentally killing nearly all of them with their incompetence, they decide to isolate themselves from the world and start a new life in Antarctica.

By 1968, the lack of a master drives them into depression, so one minion — Kevin — plans to find a new master. Stuart — a bored, teen-aged minion who is obsessed with guitars — joins him reluctantly, as does Bob, whom Kevin only chooses due to a lack of volunteers.

After a long journey, the Minions arrive in New York where they learn about Villain-Con, a convention to be held in Orlando where super-villains gather from around the world. They hitchhike to Orlando, where they become the henchmen for Scarlet Overkill, the world’s first female supervillain.

Back in Antarctica, the other Minions begin working for a Yeti, but once again accidentally kill their leader. They travel around the world to find Kevin and a new master to serve.

Scarlet takes the Minions to her home to London and orders them to steal St. Edward’s Crown from Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, threatening to execute them if they fail. With gadgets from Herb, Scarlet’s husband, the Minions successfully break into the Tower of London.

The crown is being delivered to the Queen, so they steal it from the Queen’s carriage with the police in pursuit. Bob crashes onto the mythical Sword in the Stone and pulls the sword, Excalibur, out easily to defend himself. Elizabeth II is removed from the throne and Bob is crowned as the new Monarch of the United Kingdom.

CHAPPiE – Who am I in this body?

Chappie (stylized as CHAPPiE) is a 2015 American science fiction film directed by Neill Blomkamp.

~~PLOT~~

In an effort to combat a record high crime rate in the city of Johannesburg, the South African government purchases a squadron of state-of-the-art, armor-plated A.I. attack robots from American weapons manufacturer Tetravaal, developed by British engineer Deon Wilson. A competing project is the remotely controlled MOOSE, developed by Australian soldier-turned-engineer Vincent Moore.

The robots are an instant success, wiping out some of the city’s most powerful drug and organized crime gangs in a matter of months, and before long, Tetravaal move their main headquarters to Johannesburg. Deon receives plenty of recognition for the company’s success, but Vincent grows jealous when the police are unwilling to give his heavy weapons platform equal attention.

At home, Deon creates a prototype artificial intelligence that mimics a human mind to the point of feeling emotions and having opinions, but Tetravaal CEO Michelle Bradley refuses to let him test the A.I. on a police robot.

Undeterred, Deon steals a recently damaged robot before it is destroyed and puts it in his van, along with the “guard key” needed to update the robot’s software.

On his way home, he is kidnapped by a group of gangsters, Ninja, Yolandi, and Amerika, who threaten to kill him unless he reprograms a police robot to fight for them.

Deon installs the new software into the damaged robot, which responds with childlike terror upon powering up. Deon and Yolandi calm the robot, teaching it words and naming it “Chappie“.

El bolero de Raquel (English: Raquel’s Shoeshiner) is a 1957 Mexican comedy film directed by Miguel M. Delgado and starring Cantinflas, Manola Saavedra, Flor Silvestre, and child actor Paquito Fernández who was nominated for a 1958 Silver Ariel for Best Performance by a Child Actor for the role of Chavita.

This is Cantinflas’ first Mexican color film (it was filmed in Eastmancolor, also considered as Mexico’s Technicolor).

~~Plot~~

Cantinflas is a down on his luck but affable shoe shiner that learns that his compadre has died in an accident. His friend’s widow, Leonor (Flor Silvestre) is unable to raise her child, Chavita, so she leaves the kid with Cantinflas so she can go to Guadalajara, Jalisco in order to seek help from her parents. In the first days, Cantinflas goes to work in Chapultepec and Chavita catches a ball that some other children are playing with, and almost ends up in a fight with the owners of the ball. Cantinflas calms down the child by promising he will bring him a new ball.

In order to find a better job, Cantinflas goes to school, where he tries to learn but, instead, fails in love with Raquel Saavedra, an attractive teacher who works there. While in school, he tries finding more jobs, with comic results: first, as a shoe shiner in a night club, where he gets into various incidents on his first night, including an unexpected entrance in the dancers’ dressing room and an accidental entrance to Ravel’s Boléro dance act performed by Elaine Bruce (from which the pun in the Spanish title is drawn, as he confuses Ravel with the name of the teacher with whom he is infatuated, thus thinking that the dance is for him); the scene is reminiscent of his Apache dance in the 1944 film, Gran Hotel. After sabotaging the act, Cantinflas is removed from the night club.

Cantinflas tries to get new jobs in Acapulco, where he tries everything to get some money, when accidentally Chavita leaves Cantinflas to climb La Quebrada. Cantinflas tries to rescue him, but he is stuck himself at the top of La Quebrada (as Chavita escapes easily to the other side) and he is obliged to make a spectacular dive. His action leads him to get a job as a life saver but his incompetence when attempting to save a large woman from drowning (almost drowning himself in the process) causes him to be fired the same day.

Finally, Cantinflas gets enough money to raise his godson and buys him a new big ball, but Leonor returns from Guadalajara, with a husband, a better life and a brand new ball. Chavita leaves Cantinflas and he sadly sees the scene. Angrily he kicks the ball, the ball goes to Raquel’s feet and finally they get together.

El bolero de Raquel satirizes the lifestyles of the rich with their bodyguards, managers, etc. through scenes set in posh nightclubs. Though a relative box-office disappointment for a Cantinflas film, it still ranked among the most profitable Mexican films of the year.

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” (TMNT) …. a very nice surprise!!

If you have been following this blog, you may be aware that I have several grandkids. One of the many things I enjoy doing with them is going to the movies. The adventures began when I started taking Angelika, the oldest, to movies that she would want to see.

If wasn’t long before Connor, her younger brother wanted to have these adventures with “Mina” (that’s how they call me). Yesterday … it was adventure time for ConnorMan. We went to see the “TMNT“. 

To tell you the truth, I thought that I’d be bored to heck and wait for it to be over. That wasn’t the case. I was drawn in, into the action, the plot, the characters. Needless to say, it was a very pleasant surprise. I enjoyed it as much as ConnorMan did!

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (often shortened to TMNT or Ninja Turtles) are a fictional team of four teenage anthropomorphic turtles, named after four Renaissance artists, who were trained by their anthropomorphic rat sensei in the art of ninjutsu. From their home in the storm sewers of New York City, they battle petty criminals, evil overlords, mutated animals, and alien invaders while attempting to remain isolated from society.

The characters originated in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book before their expansion into a cartoon series, films, video games, toys, and other general merchandise. During the peak of the franchise’s popularity in the late 1980s through the early 1990s, it gained considerable worldwide success and fame.

~~THE MOVIE~~

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a 2014 American science fiction action comedy film based on the franchise of the same name. A reboot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film series, the film is directed by Jonathan Liebesman, and stars Megan Fox, Johnny Knoxville, Pete Ploszek, Noel Fisher, Jeremy Howard, Alan Ritchson, Danny Woodburn, Tony Shalhoub, William Fichtner, and Will Arnett.

The film was announced shortly before Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles co-creator Peter Laird sold the rights to the franchise to Nickelodeon in 2009. It was produced by Nickelodeon Movies and Michael Bay’s production company Platinum Dunes, and distributed by Paramount Pictures. The film was released on August 8, 2014. A sequel is scheduled to be released on June 3, 2016.

April O’Neil, a reporter for Channel 6 news in New York, has been researching a gang called the Foot Clan which has been terrorizing the city. She questions a dock worker about shipments of chemicals that may be linked to the Foot Clan. April eventually learns that something is being brought in by the docks. That night, she returns and sees the Foot Clan unloading cargo. April tries to record footage using her phone, but a shadowy figure arrives and takes out the Foot Soldiers one by one. She tells her coworkers and her boss, but no one believes her story.

The Foot Clan next attacks a subway station. April rushes to the scene, hoping to encounter the vigilante (or at least find evidence confirming his existence). She sees four figures this time, who disappear after defeating the Foot Clan. She follows them to a rooftop and tries to photograph them. The Turtles Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael notice her and delete the camera’s images, warning her not to divulge their existence. She asks them who they are as they leave, and they say, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”

April runs home and opens a box filled with documents, pictures, and videos on “Project Renaissance“, which involved her now-deceased father. She notices that the turtles she cared for from her father’s laboratory fifteen years earlier seem similar to the Ninja Turtles. She recalls that her father was developing some type of mutagen. She continues researching and eventually realizes that the Ninja Turtles are the turtles from the laboratory.

Once again, she tries to convince her boss, Bernadette Thompson, that the Turtles are real. Bernadette becomes so infuriated that she fires April. April tries telling her cameraman boyfriend Vernon about them, but he does not believe her either. He does agree to take her to the old laboratory, though. There she finds her father’s lab partner, Eric Sacks.

April tells him about the Ninja Turtles, showing him the photos. Sacks explains Project Renaissance: he and her father were cultivating the mutagen for its healing properties. Sacks theorizes that, when the laboratory was destroyed, the mutagen must have somehow caused the turtles to mutate into humanoids.

Shredder

Meanwhile in the sewers, the Turtles tell their master, Splinter, that April has spotted them. Splinter orders them to find April and bring her to their lair, as she is now in great danger from the Foot Clan since she made contact with the Turtles.

Splinter

The Turtles find April and blindfold her so she won’t know their lair’s location. They take her to Splinter, who explains how she saved their lives years before when she rescued them from the fire and released them into the sewers. April admits that she has told her father’s associate about them, unaware that Sacks is actually allied with the Foot Clan’s leader, The Shredder.

Meanwhile, Sacks relays the information to Shredder. Shredder and Sacks plan to spread a deadly virus throughout New York, causing a quarantine, in order to seize control by offering the mutagen as a cure. Shredder needs to kidnap the Turtles and extract the mutagen from their blood.

He and his gang find Splinter and the Turtles in the sewers, and a battle ensues. Shredder captures Leo, Donnie and Mikey and leaves Splinter severely injured. Raphael is (so far) the only turtle left to survive the wreckage of their home while the Foot Clan presumably claims to be dead in the riot. April (who has managed to hide during the melee) tries to dig Splinter out from under the rubble. Raphael emerges and helps. April then tries to tend to Splinter’s wounds. Splinter instructs Raphael and April to save the other three Turtles before Shredder can extract the mutagen from them. April calls Vernon to give them a ride to the laboratory where the other three Turtles are being held.

When they arrive, April frees the Turtles, who join Raphael in fighting Shredder, but Shredder defeats them (again) and escapes. April, the Turtles, and Vernon escape to the Turtles’ lair to regroup.

The Turtles plan to attack Shredder on the rooftop of Sacks’ building before he is able to release the toxin, while April and Vernon search for the mutagen inside the building. April finds it and heads onto the rooftop to give it to the Turtles. With April’s help, the Turtles finally defeat Shredder, who falls off the roof.

After the Turtles retreat to the sewers, Shredder inadvertently gets tub full of mutagen on his suit

(This could possibly mean that Shredder could enter a mutation in the sequel).

The city needs heroes. Darkness has settled over New York City as Shredder and his evil Foot Clan have an iron grip on everything from the police to the politicians. The future is grim until four unlikely outcast brothers rise from the sewers and discover their destiny as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Turtles must work with fearless reporter April and her wise-cracking cameraman Vern Fenwick to save the city and unravel Shredder’s diabolical plan.
