COLIN KAEPERNICK

TRIUMPHANT RETURN

I must confess I’m not a football fan; I really don’t know much about the game; I really don’t care about it.

However, I do know a lot about Colin Kaepernick.

I respect the man and agree with the peaceful protest and the message that he’s trying to bring to the forefront by using the platform that he had when he was able to play football.

After being shunned for at least two seasons; after continued pressure from the NFL, after continued disparaging from the occupant of the Oval Office, Kap makes a triumphant return!

Take a look.

HOW DID THIS BEGIN?

In a 49ers’ final preseason game, backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick decided sit on the bench to protest racial inequality and police brutality for the national anthem.

~TAKING A  KNEE~

Former Seahawks player and Green Beret Nate Boyer who talked Kap into making the change. Boyer wrote an open letter to Kaepernick and it caused the two to meet up and discuss America and honoring the anthem.

“Soldiers take a knee in front of a fallen brother’s grave, you know, to show respect. When we’re on a patrol, you know, and we go into a security halt, we take a knee, and we pull security.”

GoldSwirl

It was US Army veteran, Nate Boyer, who suggested to Kaepernick to take a knee as a sign of respect

This is their inspiring story of what can happen when people with different perspectives decide to sit down, have a conversation, and hear each other out.

KapC3

Kaepernick was the first NFL player to kneel during the national anthem before games in 2016 to protest racial inequality and police brutality. Critics accused the protest of disrespecting the US flag and military and Drumpf called for players who protested during the anthem to be fired.

Nike released a commercial starring Colin Kaepernick on Wednesday, September 5, following this week’s announcement of a partnership between the two that prompted boycott threats as well as criticism from Drumpf.

Nike and Kaepernick posted the commercial on Twitter and YouTube.

The ad, narrated by Kaepernick, showcases various inspirational sports-related stories, including amateur athletes such as a football-playing homecoming queen and an Ironman participant who lost 120 pounds and recovered from a brain tumor. Professional athletes, including Serena Williams, LeBron James, and the Seattle Seahawks’ Shaquem Griffin (whose left hand was amputated when he was young), are also featured.

Kaepernick narrates the ad, which features a wide range of athletes including inspirational amateurs, Serena Williams, and LeBron James.
Kaepernick is shown only in the closing seconds of the commercial, which does not feature the former NFL player in football gear.

~Eric Reid: Why Colin Kaepernick and I Decided to Take a Knee~

RESPECTFUL GESTURE

Sept. 25, 2017

In early 2016, I began paying attention to reports about the incredible number of unarmed black people being killed by the police. The posts on social media deeply disturbed me, but one in particular brought me to tears: the killing of Alton Sterling in my hometown Baton Rouge, La. This could have happened to any of my family members who still live in the area. I felt furious, hurt and hopeless. I wanted to do something, but didn’t know what or how to do it. All I knew for sure is that I wanted it to be as respectful as possible.

A few weeks later, during preseason, my teammate Colin Kaepernick chose to sit on the bench during the national anthem to protest police brutality. To be honest, I didn’t notice at the time, and neither did the news media. It wasn’t until after our third preseason game on Aug. 26, 2016, that his protest gained national attention, and the backlash against him began.

After hours of careful consideration, and even a visit from Nate Boyer, a retired Green Beret and former NFL player, we came to the conclusion that we should kneel, rather than sit, the next day during the anthem as a peaceful protest.

We chose to kneel because it’s a respectful gesture.

I remember thinking our posture was like a flag flown at half-mast to mark a tragedy.

On Monday, June 25th, two friends of Antwon, 17, a rising high school senior from Rankin, Pa., who was killed by an East Pittsburgh police officer one week prior to this writing, struggled to read that poem, “I Am Not What You Think!,” as family, schoolmates and friends gathered for Antwon’s funeral at his school, Woodland Hills Intermediate School, in Swissvale, Pa.

Antwon died after being shot three times as he ran from a vehicle during a traffic stop. The police said that he and another passenger fled after an officer stopped the Chevrolet Cruze they were in because it was thought to have been involved in an earlier shooting. The driver was taken into custody, interviewed and later released, the police have said.

Quite a strong message.

Here’s the Saturday Night Performance.

Be forewarned.

Some content may be offensive to some who may shy away from the sad reality.

I had to look up the lyrics to get the full meaning.

THIS IS AMERICA

Quite a strong message within this music video.

Indeed, have to watch it more than once! In a blunt manner, not sparing any punches, Donald Glover presents the true and crude reality of America.

The title is right on target:

This IS America!

Be forewarned. Some content may be offensive to some who may shy away from the sad reality.

The video speaks for itself.

RedLineBOn the latest Saturday Night Live, Childish Gambino – the musical pseudonym for actor and Atlanta creator Donald Glover – released “This Is America,” a searing social critique of pop culture and the experience of being black in America today.

~DONALD GLOVER~

The actor, who has been riding high these days with both his series “Atlanta” and his role as young Lando Calrissian in the forthcoming “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” both hosted “Saturday Night Live” and was the musical guest as his rap/R&B alter ego, ‘Childish Gambino‘.
Glover as Gambino won a Grammy this year for best traditional R&B performance for his song “Redbone” and premiered two new songs on “SNL,” titled “Saturday” and “This Is America.”

Here’s what you need to know about the music video that has many hailing Glover/Gambino as a genius:
You will need to watch it more than once
Directed by “Atlanta” director Hiro Murai, the video is pretty surreal and packed full of messages.
It’s expansive and filmed in a warehouse, which allows for a lot of action.
As much as your eye will be drawn to Glover as a shirtless Gambino, pay close attention also to what is happening in the background.

Amer3

~It takes on gun violence in America~
Murders occur, but the guns are treated more delicately than human lives in the video — a strong statement given the current debate over gun control.
The imagery also has sparked conversation about several other themes, including police brutality, social media habits and what people are really paying attention to in the United States.
“The fact that Childish Gambino’s ‘This is America‘ tackles police brutality, gun violence, media misdirection, and the use of African Americans as a brand shield, all while dancing in Jim Crow-style caricature, shows a transcendence or mere performance and demands attention,” one person tweeted.

I haven’t been able to blog today.

By Wednesday morning he was dead and protesters were in the city’s streets.

Calls erupted from Congress and the NAACP for an independent investigation into the shooting, which the Justice Department announced within hours.

~ALTON STERLING~

POWERFUL STATEMENT

By Ricardo Neftali Arroyo

I watched the Alton Sterling execution video.

I wish I hadn’t.

Not because I didn’t want to bear witness. The way Emmett Till’s mother wanted an open casket, “so all the world can see what they did to my boy.”

I’ve borne witness before.

I saw the final moments of Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Sandra Bland, Laquan McDonald, Samuel DuBoise, and so many others. I’ve felt my heart break as Black men, women and children are gunned down for existing.

Not because it was triggering.

Police brutality is always triggering.

Triggering in that I too have seen the other end of a police officers gun, I too have felt the violation of being searched, of “fitting the description“, of being well aware that your body, at that moment is not your own, that even in the heat of my greatest discomfort my well being depended on having that officer feel as comfortable as I could.

Comfortable in my violation. Comfortable in my pain. Comfortable with my existence. All while knowing that even though I must give as many reasons for my continued existence as possible. This officer wouldn’t need to provide any to be my executioner. I am not alone in having that experience. That experience, like police brutality, is not isolated. Not even in the direct example of my life.

Not because I was already sick and tired thousands of deaths ago.
As a public defender in our criminal injustice system sick and tired is a state of existence. When on the best of days I can achieve a result for a person that resembles justice. But far more often I am simply fighting, as hard as I can, against the worst of several unjust outcomes so that I can minimize the level of injustice they must endure.

You learn, as a person of color in America, at a very early age, how to push on through the weariness of injustice.

No.

I wish I hadn’t seen that video because I have grown uncomfortable with the fetishization of black death and more importantly of its desensitization. Of those who do not lift a finger in the interest of racial justice. Or against police brutality. But are content to gawk at the trauma and injustice without engaging in the struggle against it. Those that only contribute by bearing witness.

I am uncomfortable with those who have grown comfortable with the idea that we must present our dead in order to be believed. In order for there to be action. How many more must we lay before you in order for you to do more than passively engage? If not us then who? If not now then when?

I’ll leave you with this.

“If you have come to help me, you are wasting your time; but if you are here because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.”

CAN’T GET AWAY FROM THE FACT THAT IT EXISTS

Police brutality is the wanton use of excessive force, usually physical, but also common in forms of verbal attacks and psychological intimidation, by a police officer.

Widespread police brutality exists in many countries, even those that prosecute it. It is one of several forms of police misconduct, which include: false arrest; intimidation; racial profiling; political repression; surveillance abuse;sexual abuse; and police corruption.

However, as aforementioned, it may involve physical force but never reaching death under police custody. Although illegal, it can be done under the color of law.
