STANDING TOGETHER IN PRAYER

Many people would agree that prayer alone will not solve all of our problems, but to the water protectors at Standing Rock, direct action is considered sacred. Prayer can be action. To live one’s life as if it were a prayer is a very powerful way to engage in the world around us.

Indigenous spirituality acknowledges that all of life is interconnected through nature, knowing that humans have a responsibility to steward and protect the land. Standing Rock’s resistance to the Dakota Access Pipeline has become globally symbolic of the struggle to protect our environment from the heartless exploitation of extraction industries that threaten water, land, air, and life itself.

For the first time in history, we are seeing a unified global movement to stand and act in solidarity with our indigenous relatives to protect the sacred.

This is your opportunity to participate in something truly inspired and hopeful, to pray with Standing Rock!

ST. PATRICK & THE SNAKES

St. Patrick’s Day, which is celebrated worldwide on March 17, honors St. Patrick, the Christian missionary who supposedly rid Ireland of snakes during the fifth century A.D.

According to legend, the patron saint of Ireland chased the slithering reptiles into the sea after they began attacking him during a 40-day fast he undertook on top of a hill.

Religions …. different yet all the same!!

A religion is an organized collection of beliefs, cultural systems, and world views that relate humanity to an order of existence.

Many religions may have organized behaviors, clergy, a definition of what constitutes adherence or membership, holy places, and scriptures. The practice of a religion may also include rituals, sermons, commemoration or veneration of a deity, gods or goddesses, sacrifices, festivals, feasts, trance, initiations, funerary services, matrimonial services, meditation, prayer, music, art, dance, public service or other aspects of human culture. Religions may also contain mythology.

The word religion is sometimes used interchangeably with faith, belief system or sometimes set of duties; however, in the words of Émile Durkheim, religion differs from private belief in that it is “something eminently social”.

Those we follow today, in all the different religions have one main “representative”: Buddha, Jesus, Muhammad.

They were all teachers who taught love.

What has happened to that teaching? 

In my humble opinion, it has been distorted and has become a weapon. A weapon of fear, control, stature in society. The main values have been lost.

Where is the love? Where is “do unto others”?

We ALL are connected through HUMANITY!!

Lent ….. being irreverent!!

Lent (Latin: Quadragesima – English: Fortieth) is a solemn religious observance in the liturgical calendar of many Christian denominations that begins on Ash Wednesday and covers a period of approximately six weeks before Easter Day.

The traditional purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer through prayer, penance, repentance of sins, almsgiving, atonement and self-denial.

Its institutional purpose is heightened in the annual commemoration of Holy Week, marking the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus, which recalls the tradition and events of the New Testament beginning on Friday of Sorrows, further climaxing on Jesus’ crucifixion on Good Friday, which ultimately culminates in the joyful celebration on Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

What follows is irreverent and meant to be taken with humor not seriously.

There is no intention to offend anyone. 

Lent is traditionally described as lasting for forty days, in commemoration of the forty days which, according to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, Jesus spent fasting in the desert before the beginning of his public ministry, where he endured temptation by the Devil.

However, different Christian denominations calculate the forty days of Lent differently. Historically, the season of Lent lasts from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday and includes the Paschal Triduum. This duration has been maintained by most Western Christian denominations, including the Anglican Church, Lutheran Church, Methodist Church, and Western Rite Orthodox Church. 

However, after the liturgical abbreviations of the Second Vatican Council in the Roman Catholic Church, Lent is now taken to end on Holy Thursday rather than Easter Eve, and hence lasts 38 days excluding Sundays, or 44 days in total.

I was born into a very Catholic and actively practicing Catholic family. I went to Catholic school from kindergarten to high school. After graduation, I went to the Catholic University in Puerto Rico. I grew up with all the beliefs and traditions that the Catholic Church espouses.

For reasons that I don’t need to mention here, I am no longer a practicing member of ANY organized religion. 

My beliefs are others. I respect all beliefs that anyone may hold dear and practice.

Life is much better with a bit of humor and when we are able to laugh at ourselves.
