I strongly believe that today marks one of the most critical and important election in my lifetime.

For me personally, the past two years have been a steady decline into the darkest belly of the America that I didn’t know.

If America continues down this path, the future of its citizens, the children, the environment and so much more will be on the line.

Most of all, the spirit of love, kindness, caring, cooperation will be replaced by hatred, racism, xenophobia, isolationism, nativism, tribalism.

VOTE AS IF YOUR LIFE DEPENDED ON IT 

BECAUSE THE AMERICAN WAY, AS WE KNOW IT DOES

I won’t be watching news, polls, voting results today at all.

I will wait until Wednesday morning so see where the nation is heading.

The 2018 US Open final between Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka will be remembered for all the wrong reasons

The match was guaranteed to make history no matter what.

Williams was gunning for her 24th Grand Slam tournament win, a number that would have tied the all-time record for the most Grand Slam singles tournament wins in history.

And Osaka was hoping to be the first Haitian-Japanese player in history to win a Grand Slam.

In the end, Osaka defeated Williams 6-2, 6-4, ensuring the latter – but her achievement was overshadowed by what happened in the match.

In early 2016, I began paying attention to reports about the incredible number of unarmed black people being killed by the police. The posts on social media deeply disturbed me, but one in particular brought me to tears: the killing of Alton Sterling in my hometown Baton Rouge, La. This could have happened to any of my family members who still live in the area. I felt furious, hurt and hopeless. I wanted to do something, but didn’t know what or how to do it. All I knew for sure is that I wanted it to be as respectful as possible.

A few weeks later, during preseason, my teammate Colin Kaepernick chose to sit on the bench during the national anthem to protest police brutality. To be honest, I didn’t notice at the time, and neither did the news media. It wasn’t until after our third preseason game on Aug. 26, 2016, that his protest gained national attention, and the backlash against him began.

After hours of careful consideration, and even a visit from Nate Boyer, a retired Green Beret and former NFL player, we came to the conclusion that we should kneel, rather than sit, the next day during the anthem as a peaceful protest.

We chose to kneel because it’s a respectful gesture.

I remember thinking our posture was like a flag flown at half-mast to mark a tragedy.

Pedro Albizu Campos (September 12, 1891 – April 21, 1965) was a Puerto Rican attorney and politician, and the leading figure in the Puerto Rican independence movement. Gifted in languages, he spoke six. He graduated from Harvard Law School with the highest grade point average in his law class, an achievement that earned him the right to give the valedictorian speech at his graduation ceremony.

However, animus towards his mixed racial heritage would lead to his professors delaying two of his final exams in order to keep Albizu Campos from graduating on time. During his time at Harvard University he became involved in the Irish struggle for independence.

Albizu Campos was the president and spokesperson of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party from 1930 until his death in 1965. Because of his oratorical skill, he was hailed as ‘El Maestro‘ (The Teacher).

He was imprisoned twenty-six years for attempting to overthrow the United States government in Puerto Rico.

I’ve truly never been a fan of rap music and Eminem hasn’t been one of my favorite performers. This time, IMHO, he’s plainly stated what many of Americans are feeling. It takes an artist to have the gall and balls to call out the ‘moronic idiot‘ who is leading the country.

Sure beats out the hell of a job those surrounding and enabling HIM to take this nation to the gutter, the spot it currently occupies, except in the minds of the IDIOTS who still support HIM.

Thus far this week we’ve seen everyone from a Republican Senator to foreign leaders call out Drumpf for his, well, bullshit. But now one of the most devastating take-downs of Drumpf is coming from rapper Eminem – and it’s a moment you’ll want to pay attention to whether or not you’re a fan of Eminem or hip hop, because it nails Drumpf with a stunning level of detailed accuracy.

PUERTO RICANS HAVE A GOOD MEMORY

I’m not sure what is more hurtful, disrespectful, demeaning, or racist

1. Ignoring the devastation in PR for six days while Tweeting about NFL players.
2. Responding to the hurricane by reminding Puerto Rico that the debt needs to be paid no matter what.
3. Waiving temporarily a law (Jones Act) that limits trade in PR and results in excessive costs for Puerto Ricans only for 10 days.
4. Claiming that Puerto Ricans want everything done for them.
5. Playing golf while insulting the leadership of Puerto Rico.
6. Delaying a request for aid until possibly mid-October.
7. Being condescending by telling Puerto Ricans that a member of his team, “works on something called a budget.”
8. Claiming Katrina as a “real tragedy” thus implying that PR’s condition isn’t.
9. Blaming Puerto Ricans for throwing “their” budget off for the money used in relief efforts.
10. Worrying Puerto Ricans with the burden that the relief aid will have to be repaid.
11. Boasting shamelessly about a “very good” response that has been deemed by his own military personnel as slow and insufficient.
12. Throwing paper towels at people in need as if he were throwing t-shirts at a concert.

I know that my fellow Puerto Ricans and I are outraged, but this should be a feeling shared not only by every American citizen but by every human that has an ounce of human compassion.

This goes beyond political affiliations.

This is at the core of being a decent human being.

There’s only a few things that are certain.
1. Puerto Rico will recover.
2. Many do care about PR.
3. Puerto Ricans have grit.
4. The world is watching.
5. We won’t forget.
