STANDING TALL

A symbol of pride, struggle, accomplishments and history.

My heart surges with pride when I see it bellowing in the wind.

This flag represents a lot.

This flag exemplifies the diversity of people who make up this unbeatable community.

A whole community of people, bound together by common goals:

recognition and equality.

The rainbow flag, LGBT pride flag, is a symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) pride and LGBT social movements. The colors reflect the diversity of the LGBT community, and the flag is often used as a symbol of gay pride when it comes to LGBTQ+ rights marches.

It originated in Northern California, but is now used worldwide

Designed by San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker in 1978, the design has undergone several revisions to first remove then re-add colors due to widely available fabrics. As of 2008, the most common variant consists of six stripes, with the colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet.

The flag is commonly flown horizontally, with the red stripe on top, as it would be in a natural rainbow.

HATE IN PEOPLE’S HEARTS

I’ve heard this one before.

There are so many examples.

I can think of a few and I know that there are so many more.

Yellow star on the Jews

Pink star on the homosexuals in Nazi Germany

Remove signs of “colored people’s entrance”

Sitting in the front of the bus

Marriage equality is the law of the land

Rainbow flags abound

Removing the Confederate flag in South Carolina … remember Bree Newsome?

The outward symbols can be very easily removed.

It’s the thoughts and the feelings behind these that remain. There’s still a lot of work to do.

A Day In The Life Of Waiting For The Supreme Court Decision On Marriage Equality

WASHINGTON

Any day now, the Supreme Court is going to hand down a major decision on same-sex marriage. And when it does, and if it rules in favor of marriage equality, as many observers expect, there’s going to be one hell of a party outside.

There will be rainbow flags. There will be rainbow shirts. There will be little dogs with little rainbow shirts and little rainbow flags. Hundreds and hundreds of people will likely squeeze in by the front steps, with brightly colored signs and hugs for strangers and someone blasting Beyoncé and Lady Gaga songs. There will be tears; there will be protesters. Spider-Man might come — he does from time to time — and a guy in a Revolutionary War costume will almost definitely be there.

But in the days leading up to the court’s decision — it could come Thursday, Friday or next Monday — it’s been a quieter affair.

The front steps are empty. There are no lines wrapping around the corner of the street. Even on days when the court has been in session, when there’s a chance the same-sex marriage decision could happen, rumors of the ruling being put off until late June have been enough to keep most people away.
