It’s hard to believe photography didn’t exist 200 years ago.

All of the hundreds of thousands of fleeting moments we capture today and take so much for granted, our not-so-distant ancestors were unable to do. They never knew the joy of looking at photo albums of weddings, birthdays, births, and just everyday life. Today there are very few special moments in our lives that are not captured by a camera of one form or another.

“It was in the year 1839 that two photographic techniques were discovered, the daguerrotype by Louis Daguerre, and the calotype by William Fox Talbot. On August 19th of that year, the French government announced photography as a gift “free to the world”.

No truer words were ever spoken. It has been quite a gift. Can you remember the first photograph you took? Or, can you remember the first photograph you ever saw? The one that made an impact on you, that spoke to you, that inspired you to pick up a camera and create something? Do you remember what that felt like?

Have you ever stopped to think about what your life would be like without photography? I have. I’ve wondered what the world would be like if we didn’t have images surrounding us constantly. To not have the photos on my walls of my kids or not be able to show them photos of their great-grandparents. I’ve wondered what art would be like. Would modern art, as we know it today, exist without the invention of photography? When photography came along, many artists got scared. In the past, they painted what they saw; that was art. When they realized the potential of the photograph, they had to evolve and grow. They began to show the world that art was more than just capturing reality.  We saw the invention of Impressionism, Pointillism, Cubism, etc. Artists like Picasso and Pollock and Rothko challenged what we thought of as art.”

The World Photography Organization (WPO) is an international organization which manages various initiatives for amateur and professional photographers. Incorporated as World Photography Awards Limited, the organisation hosts the annual Sony World Photography Awards and the subsequent World Photography Festival, exhibiting the work of winning photographers in each category. Sponsored by Sony, the awards took place in Cannes since 2008 and moved to London in 2011.

Other programs include; the World Photography Student Focus Competition; Photo Shanghai; the World Photography Festival, the World Photography Collection and the World Photography Focus Program.

~~World Photography Awards~~

The World Photography Awards are organized annually by WPO. They were launched in 2008 and are currently sponsored by Sony. The competition has three entry levels; Student, Open and Professional, each with a number of subcategories.

The overall winner of the Professional category is awarded with the Iris d’Or, a cash prize and the title “Sony World Photographer of the Year” at the Awards ceremony which takes place in London. The award ceremony is part of the larger World Photography Festival and features exhibitions, workshops, portfolio review, student programs and talks from World Photographic Academy members, culminating in the award ceremony.

An exhibition of winners is held at Somerset House in London.

Uniting local and global communities in a worldwide celebration of photography each August.

Uniting local and global communities in a worldwide celebration of photography every August.

Started in 2009 and first launched globally in 2010, the World Photography Day project is now one of the worlds fastest growing photography celebrations.

Today, we take our photographs for granted. But next time you’re flicking though photos from your last holiday, remember that there was once a time when photography didn’t exist. A time when those precious moments couldn’t be captured, uploaded and shared.

I follow several wonderful photographers through their blogs and websites.

I would like to honor them today.

There are so many others out there. You all make the world a better place.
