 I don’t have very much time these days so I’ll make it quick.

Like my life.

You know as we come to the end of this phase of our lives, we find ourselves trying to remember the good times and trying to forget the bad times, and we find ourselves thinking about the future.

We start to worry, thinking “What am I gonna do?”, “Where am I gonna be in ten years?”.

But I say to you, “Hey, look at me”.

Please, don’t worry so much, because in the end none of us have very long on this earth – life is fleeting.

And if you’re ever distressed, cast your eyes to the summer sky when the stars are strung across the velvety night, and when a shooting star streaks through the blackness turning night into day, make a wish and think of me.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROBIN

The world just got less funny … with the loss of Robin Williams.

Yesterday, July 21, he would have turned 64 years old.

To this day, I still miss him.

Even though he remains with all of us …. in our memories, in our hearts, in his numerous, incredible movies, videos, clips … and all digital media, his absence is acutely felt.

Robin McLaurin Williams (July 21, 1951 – August 11, 2014) was an American actor and comedian. Starting as a stand-up comedian in San Francisco and Los Angeles in the mid-1970s, he is credited with leading San Francisco’s comedy renaissance. After rising to fame as Mork in the sitcom Mork & Mindy (1978–82), he went on to establish a career in both stand-up comedy and feature film acting. He was known for his improvisational skills.

After his film debut in the musical comedy Popeye (1980), he starred or co-starred in widely acclaimed films, including the comedy-drama The World According to Garp (1982), war comedy Good Morning, Vietnam (1987), dramas Dead Poets Society (1989) and Awakenings (1990), comedy-drama The Fisher King (1991), animated musical fantasy Aladdin (1992), drama Good Will Hunting (1997), and psychological thriller One Hour Photo (2002), as well as financial successes such as the fantasy adventure film Hook (1991), comedy Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), fantasy adventure Jumanji (1995), comedy  (1996), and fantasy adventure-comedy Night at the Museum (2006).

In 1998, Williams won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Dr. Sean Maguire in Good Will Hunting. He also received two Primetime Emmy Awards, six Golden Globe Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and four Grammy Awards throughout his career.

On August 11, 2014, Williams committed suicide by hanging himself at his home in Paradise Cay, California.

It was revealed shortly after his death that Williams had been suffering from severe depression, Parkinson’s disease, and diffuse Lewy body dementia.

A TRIP BACK IN TIME …. 1990 TREASURE

Meryl Streep, who in the late 1980’s raised awareness on pesticides and forming the group “Mothers and Others“, took the opportunity to speak at this charity concert in aid of the protecting the environment. “An Evening with Friends of the Environment” featured celebrity mothers Olivia Newton-John, Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn, Cher, Meryl Streep, Lily Tomlin and Robin Williams (“the other in mother and others”). Filmed at the LA outdoor Greek Theater before a live audience, the celebrity cast sang What a Wonderful World at the concert’s finale.

“My friends and I are so very, very happy that you came here tonight to be with us on this warm, beautiful evening – in Los Angeles, in 1990. We’ve been sitting here tonight, perched on the edge of a mountain, on the rim of a continent, at the beginning of a new century. In ten years it will be the year 2000. I don’t know, maybe it’s just me, but … how come ten years ago seems like twenty minutes – and the year 2000 seems like about thousand miles away.

I was thinking about where I was ten years ago.

Ten years ago I just had my first baby, and just had my first hit movie “Kramer vs. Kramer“. And I remember every Thursday I would put all the garbage and all the food and the cans and the bottles and the papers and everything, in one big plastic bag and I take it down to the street and it would just go away.

I don’t know where.

I think to New Jersey? That was back in the old days when they had landfills. But after Thursday I don’t know where they took it. I really didn’t think it was my problem, not like I do now.

Back then, I did think that I was environmentally conscious person. I heard then that sometimes there were steroids in the beef, so we ate a lot of fish. Since the oceans were pristine, we believed that we were eating clean. So much has changed since then, you know, that I wonder, what ten years from now, how things will be different.

My little girl said to me, “Momma, what will they have when I’m a grown-up, that we don’t have now?” And I think, she had in mind one of those personal proportion backpacks that just lift her off to the beach and back in three minutes. But what I wanted to say to her was that she would never have to worry, that her baby would get skin cancer from being out in the sun, because we would have done everything in our power to restore the Ozone layer. And I wanted to tell her that she’d be able to jog through town and take deep gulps of fresh air and not think two things about it.

And I wanted to tell her that she’d wake up to the sound of songbirds and that she could drink from the rivers. I think that might be just a mother’s dream. But one thing is certain: Whatever changes do occur in the next ten years, for better or for worse, is up to us. Right now. It’s not too late, but there is no time to wait. Thank you for coming”.

Robin Williams’s death: a reminder that suicide and depression are not selfish

News broke that Robin Williams had passed away, due to apparent suicide following severe depression. As the vast majority of people will likely have already said, this was terribly heart-breaking news. Such an iconic, talented and beloved figure will have no shortage of tributes paid to him and his incredible legacy.

It’s also worth noting that Robin Williams was open about his mental health issues.

Letterman said he “had no idea that the man was in pain”

Letterman showed clips from Williams’ appearances on his show, saying he’d been friends with Williams for 38 years. Among the clips The Late Show trotted out: a young Letterman’s cameo on Mork & Mindy.

“What I will add here is that, beyond being a very talented man and a good friend and a gentleman, I am sorry I, like everybody else, had no idea that the man was in pain and the man was suffering,” Letterman said.

Letterman’s show was on break the week when Williams died, so this was his first episode to address his friend’s passing. Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers all honored Williams in tributes of their own last week.

“Two things would happen, because Robin was on the program,” Letterman told his audience. “One, I didn’t have to do anything; all I had to do was sit here and watch the machine. And, two, people would watch; if they knew Robin was on the show, the viewership would go up, because they wanted to see Robin.

And, believe me, that wasn’t just true of television. I believe that was true of the kind of guy he was. People were drawn to him because of this electricity.”

Letterman said the two befriended each other 38 years ago at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles, a hotbed at the time for emerging comedians, including former “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno, Elayne Boosler and Jimmy Walker. Letterman recalled how it was common for comics to make fun of new acts at the venue, and prepared to do the same when an emcee announced a new comedian from Scotland was about to take the stage.

“We were feeling pretty smug about our position right away, because the material is going to be haggis, and that kind of crap,” Letterman recalled. “So, we’re relaxed, we’re ready to go, and all of a sudden, he comes up on stage, and — you know what it is — it’s like nothing we had ever seen before, nothing we had ever imagined before.”

The comedians, he said, knew they were watching someone special.

“We’re like morning dew; he comes in like a hurricane. And now, the longer he’s onstage, the worse we feel about ourselves,” Letterman said, with a laugh, “because it’s not stopping.

And then he finishes, and I thought, ‘Well, that’s it, they’re going to have to put an end to show business, because what could happen after this?’”
