20th Anniversary of Ellen Degeneres Coming Out

I remember as if it was yesterday.

I watched Ellen’s sitcom religiously.

I followed all her antics and was waiting for that one episode.

I was with you, I’m still with you and will always be with you, Ellen.

YEP I’M GAY

Did you expect it to turn into all of this?,” Oprah Winfrey asked Ellen DeGeneres on an episode of her talk show that aired on the afternoon of April 30, 1997.

Two weeks earlier, a Time cover had debuted, featuring DeGeneres and the instantly famous words “Yep, I’m Gay.”

On April 25, DeGeneres spoke to Diane Sawyer on 20/20 and said, “I decided this was not going to be something that I was going to live the rest of my life being ashamed of.”

Hours after the Oprah interview aired, DeGeneres’s charismatic bookstore owner character, Ellen Morgan, followed suit, coming out as gay in a one-hour, two-part episode of her sitcom Ellen. “The Puppy Episode” was watched by an estimated 44 million people, nearly three times the show’s usual ratings.

It’s been 20 years since that April.

DeGeneres has hosted her own daytime talk show, also called Ellen, for nearly 14 years. She’s hosted the Oscars, won the Presidential Medal of Freedom, starred in two blockbuster cartoons, and all the while lived openly as a gay woman.

This weekend has been quite troubling for me.

I’m sure many of you know the reason why.

The latest ‘wrench thrown in the process’ is another batch of emails that may or may not be significant.

By all counts, it seems that history will be the only way that the effect of this revelation with change/upset the results of this most important American election process.

Presidential Election 2016

To me, it’s not only America.

To me, it’s the whole world.

Remember the saying …

‘cut off your nose to spite your face
to hurt yourself in an effort to punish someone else’

Today, more than any day, we need this kind of powerful message.

Alicia Keys urges fans to vote for Hillary Clinton in powerful PSA

Alicia Keys is urging fans to “Vote Love” in a powerful new video endorsing Hillary Clinton.

In the video, produced in partnership with MoveOn.org Political Action, Keys discusses the importance of voting for Clinton and how it can help us “wake up in a more perfect union” as it relates to trans equality, gender equality, sexual equality, and racial equality.

“I’m fighting for a woman who was never meant to have a seat at the table,” she says. “A woman who never quit–who never got too jaded for hope.

She endures because she has faith in our kindness.”

Keys is one of more than 100 high-profile celebrities who have joined MoveOn.org’s #UnitedAgainstHate campaign to ensure Americans vote against Donald Trump in the upcoming election.

BERTA CACERES

Berta Isabel Cáceres Flores (4 March 1973 – 3 March 2016) was a Honduran environmental activist and indigenous leader of the Lenca people and co-founder and coordinator of the Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH).

She won the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2015.

She was killed in her home by armed intruders, after years of threats against her life.

Cáceres was born in La Esperanza (Intibucá). She grew up surrounded by the violence of Central America in the 1970’s, and with a role model of humanitarianism in her own home – her mother, Berta Flores, was a midwife and social activist who took in refugees from El Salvador and cared for them.

She studied education at university and graduated with a teaching qualification.

Caitlyn Jenner SUPPORTS gay marriage just weeks after awkward exchange with Ellen DeGeneres

CAITLYN JENNER DESCRIBES HERSELF AS A TRADITIONALIST

The 65-year-old came to blows with TV host Ellen DeGeneres a couple of weeks ago regarding her opinion on the matter.

During the tense interview Cait – who has recently transitioned – said she didn’t really “get” same sex marriage.

But after some time to contemplate her stance she revealed how she now feels in her latest blog post, written to mark the end of the first series of her show.

She wrote: “I want to help each of you understand something that I only recently embraced: Being different is okay – in fact, it’s great! But I also understand it takes some getting used to.”

“Like many people, there was a time when I didn’t realize how important it is for gay couples to have the right to get married,” she confessed.

“But after hearing from my gay friends and learning more about the hardships they faced because of discrimination, it became clear to me that everyone should be able to marry the person they love.

“I can only hope that by sharing my story, there’s someone out there whose mind has been changed about trans people.”

Ellen and Cait enjoyed a rather awkward exchange regarding the issue a couple of weeks ago when the TV presenter brought up that Caitlyn had previously identified as a conservative republican.

I must confess that I watched the complete first season of “I Am Cait”.

This isn’t the usual type of show that I watch.

The only reality shows that I watch are “Survivor” and “The Amazing Race”.

The reason that I watched “Cait” is because I didn’t want anyone judge the show by what others told me.

I wanted to make my own opinions based on what I saw.

I think there’s a duality in all of this for me.

I feel for Caitlyn as she goes throw her transformation in such a public manner.

Yet, at the same time, I still feel some superficiality in all of it.

Sometimes it pains me to watch some of the episodes.

As a member of the LGBT community, I was looking forward to see what kind of message she would bring to the forefront.

I wondered if she would help or hinder the movement for visibility and equality in the trans community.

I’m still “on the fence” about this.

I don’t know yet it this is really the person best fitted to represent the transgender community.

As noted above, her views don’t  coincide with the usual LGBT positions.

I guess we will still have to wait.

In the meantime, the show has been renewed for a second season.

I wonder where it all will take us.
