HURRICANE MATTHEW

These were the days!

For me, it really started last Tuesday when I realized this monster was headed our way.

All the predictions were dire.

We picked up all the outside furniture, wind chimes, pots and plants … anything that could be a projectile.

Wondered what last night and this morning would bring.

We feel blessed and lucky!

To our advantage, it veered a bit east, from Category 4 went to Category 3.

There was rain and wind last night.

We still feel wind gusts.

Happy to say no major damage.

We have power, water, internet and television.

Luckier than so many others.

As of this writing, the eye is going over the city of Jacksonville, north from us.

We are OK!!

MADNESS OF OUR SPECIES

Natalie Anne Merchant (born October 26, 1963) is an American singer-songwriter and musician. She joined the alternative rock band 10,000 Maniacs in 1981 and left it to begin her solo career in 1993.

Activism
In 2012, Merchant, along with actor and writer Mark Ruffalo, organized a concert to protest oil and gas fracking in New York state. A documentary, written and directed by Jon Bowermaster, was made of the event, “Dear Governor Cuomo.” She directed a short 2013 documentary titled SHELTER: A Concert Film to Benefit Victims of Domestic Violence, that shone light on a group of women living in the Mid-Hudson region of New York State responding to the crisis of domestic violence in their community with compassion and creativity.

Musicians, advocates, criminal prosecutors, victims and survivors all take to the stage, illuminating the darkness surrounding this public health epidemic.

At the end of the day …. “The Tiniest Things Matter”!!

earth-day

~~April 22, 2015~~

EVERYWHERE AROUND THE WORLD THIS IS HAPPENING NOW

The earth is the planet given to us by God to live on.

Despite what scientists might have us believe, it is the only planet in our solar system that humanity can comfortably inhabit. The earth is a paradise for the creatures that live on it. Every species on earth has its place in the circle of life.

Human beings need food, clothing, shelter to survive. All of these are provided in ample supply on God’s green earth. It is an unfortunate fact the we have not taken good care of the land that has been placed in our guardianship.

Hopefully, it is not too late.

~Make It Green~

Lives are crying because it’s not clean,
Earth is dying because it’s not green …

Earth is our dear Mother, don’t pollute it,
She gives us food and shelter, just salute it …

With Global Warming, it’s in danger,
Let’s save it by becoming a strong ranger …

With dying trees and animals, it’s in sorrow,
Make green today and green tomorrow …

With melting snow, one day it will sink,
How can we save it, just think …

Trees are precious, preserve them,
Water is a treasure, reserve it …

Grow more trees, make Mother Earth green,
Reduce pollution and make her a Queen ….

Something to think about …. the Nature of Poverty!!

~~May 22, 2014~~

Poverty is general scarcity or dearth, or the state of one who lacks a certain amount of material possessions or money. Absolute poverty or destitution refers to the deprivation of basic human needs, which commonly includes food, water, sanitation, clothing, shelter, health care and education. Relative poverty is defined contextually as economic inequality in the location or society in which people live.

After the industrial revolutionmass production in factories made production goods increasingly less expensive and more accessible. Of more importance is the modernization of agriculture, such as fertilizers, to provide enough yield to feed the population. The supply of basic needs can be restricted by constraints on government services such as corruption, tax avoidancedebt and loan conditionalities and by the brain drain of health care and educational professionals. Strategies of increasing income to make basic needs more affordable typically include welfare, economic freedoms, and providing financial services.

Poverty reduction is a major goal and issue for many international organizations such as the United Nations and the World Bank. The World Bank estimated 1.29 billion people were living in absolute poverty in 2008. Of these, about 400 million people in absolute poverty lived in India and 173 million people in China. In terms of percentage of regional populations, sub-Saharan Africa at 47% had the highest incidence rate of absolute poverty in 2008. Between 1990 and 2010, about 663 million people moved above the absolute poverty level. Still, extreme poverty is a global challenge; it is observed in all parts of the world, including developed economies.

UNICEF estimates half the world’s children (or 1.1 billion) live in poverty.
