WE THREE KINGS OF ORIENT ARE

The Three Kings (Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar) represented Europe, Arabia and Africa respectively.

They came from afar, searching for Baby Jesus and brought them presents: Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh.

These valuable items were standard gifts to honor a king or deity in the ancient world: gold as a precious metal, frankincense as perfume or incense, and myrrh as anointing oil.

Story behind the song
There is so much mystery surrounding the story of the Three Kings. Who were they? Where did they come from? What relation did they have to each other? We only really know what (or Who) they were after.

Their only guides were ancient scripture and a bright star. They would not give up until they found the Savior of the world, no matter the cost.

Our arrangement of this traditional Christmas song “We Three Kings” is a tribute to them, their tenacity, and their Noble Purpose.

Story behind the song

We’ve all had that phone call. That email or that message. That conversation.

Bad news.

We’re all struggling with something – a debilitating weakness or illness. Or someone we love is barely holding on. We watch the news. We see the tweets, the Facebook posts. The YouTube comments!

We hear about hate, terror, and despair. But just because what sells, what goes “viral,” or what gets attention may try to drown out the good in the world, it doesn’t mean that goodness is gone. Just because choruses of controversy and scandal shout louder than quiet symphonies of service, it doesn’t mean that inside most of us still genuinely want happiness not only for ourselves, but also our family, our friends, and our fellow human beings.

Media can make the world look bleak.

They’ve given themselves this job description, in part because there’s a darker side on the surface of human nature that feeds on fear and cynicism. But deep down, we are beings of light. And in the end, since darkness is merely the absence of light, light will inevitably overcome dark.

This is the essence of hope. And the essence of this song.

“No matter what you’ve been through, no matter if you think you’re falling apart, it’s gonna be okay.”

Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow. But we believe that someday, somehow, all things will be made right.

And as the Psalm says, “They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.”

In the meantime, there are so many more things to hope for and to work at while we yearn for the outcome we want so badly – more gratitude for what we have, more love for those we’ve taken for granted, more faith in ourselves and those we hold dear, and more confidence in a Divine purpose.

We felt like the best way to spread the message of this song was to supplement our standard classically-influenced instrumental niche with a more pop-driven tune featuring Al’s superb vocal skills.

As Oscar Hammerstein once said:

“It is a modern tragedy that despair has so many spokesmen, and hope so few.”

WHEN I WOKE UP THIS MORNING

I woke up today with a feeling of anticipation.

There was something different in the air.

In the  brief moment of waking and being in touch with reality, I knew there was something different.

It was very similar to Christmas morning, as a kid, before you realize what day it is and what is waiting for you.

Then I realized: I’m legally married!

No one can undo this!

History was made yesterday, June 26, 2015.

Marriage Equality is the law of the land!

I looked through my feed & there it was ….

Our commitment is recognized now as we have always recognized it.

MY STORY IN A NUTSHELL

As I was growing up I realized that I was “different” but I didn’t know how. Back in the 1950’s, I didn’t know there was a name for my difference. I just knew in my young mind that I wasn’t like others. Yet, I couldn’t pinpoint what is was. I realized I had what you can call “crushes” on some of my teachers, on some soap opera actresses, on some movies stars he majority of which were female. There were also a few guys but not that many. I felt more comfortable in the presence of women. I was chubby and later gained weight. I felt I wasn’t pretty. No guy would ever be interested in me. And this was OK.

I went to a Catholic school from kindergarten to high school. The principles of that faith were ingrained in my mind and soul. Now I think I was “brainwashed” into believing the religious principles. This was my life. My parents were both very active in our parish. Nuns and priests were a staple of my growing up.

It wasn’t until I went to college that I knew. Initially, I didn’t have a name for my feelings either.

I went to a Catholic university (can you believe that!) and that’s were I met an exchange student who lived in the same dorm I did. This dorm was run by nuns.

The exchange student and I became inseparable. The best of friends. Soulmates, two peas in a pod, two of a kind. We found that we had similar interests and it felt as if we’d know each other forever. She was born in Puerto Rico but lived in Baltimore. She also was raised in the Catholic church and had similar beliefs.

LIFE GOT IN THE WAY

It wasn’t until 1996 when we reconnected again …. and we haven’t separated since then. We decided that we wanted to be together for the rest of our lives as many years as we had left.

I never thought that I would be able to marry the love of my life. I knew we were committed for life but marriage? At our age, aside from love and passion, there are many reasons and benefits to changing your civil status from single to married.

Florida legalized same sex marriages on January 6, 2015. We were there on the first day, getting our marriage license and participating in a “mass wedding” that same afternoon. Still we didn’t think that nationwide would be a reality … not in our lifetime.

Then, yesterday happened!

The law of the land … marriage equality for all 50 states. And it can’t be undone. That gives us peace of mind in so many ways.

We are beyond happy that our love, union and commitment is recognized in the eyes of the law and of society.

Choice round of the Semi-Finals .. Judge’s Choice

The remaining four dancing couples of Dancing With The Stars Season 20 performed for votes. Each couple performed two routines — one with the Judges’ Choice and a second routine.

For the Judges’ Choice round, each of the judges will be assigned to a couple to coach for one dance, choosing their song, dance style and overall creativity.

Noah and Sharna worked with Carrie Ann …. and they did a magnificent job.

The judge, Carrie Ann, intended to mirror Noah’s journey from wartime injury to recovery, and ultimately, performing on DWTS.

Julianne Hough calls it Noah’s best dance yet, and Noah and Sharna earned a Perfect 30.

The Piano Guys are at it again. Their new CD is coming out early in October 2014. It’s titles “Wonders”. I have already pre-ordered mine. I’m such a fan.

I’m taken by Steven’s joy and big smile while playing any of the many cellos he has. Jon has fast moving fingers, showing a dexterity on the piano keys that is beyond comprehension. 

These guys look like they are having the time of their lives. Their joy and enthusiasm is infectious.

This many be one of the many reasons why I like and enjoy their music and talents so much.

Story behind the song

Holy hemiola, Batman! 50 years of music and film all rolled together in front of the cars that have become icons of super hero history. This is one of those projects we’ve wanted to do from the very beginning of The Piano Guys.

We love super heroes, the dramatic music that has brought them to life, and the vivid films that have made them legends. We used piano, cello, handheld cameras, a radio controlled helicopter, and some scrappy special effect techniques in the most creative ways possible to emulate the three epic eras of one of the greatest super heroes ever created: BATMAN!

One of our favorite little surprises on the album is a track called, “Batman: Evolution” – an epic mash-up of all three Batman themes (from the 60’s TV show, the ’89 “Keaton” movies, and the current “Dark Knight” trilogy). We’re filming the video this week. And for the first time in history ALL THREE BATMOBILES from each of these eras will be in the same video! Holy hot wheels, Batman!

The 8-yr old kid in each of us is doing back handsprings! Be sure to stay tuned! And in the meantime please PRE-ORDER our new album!

Our kids give us great inspiration for our music.

When Jon’s 17 year
old daughter said how much she loved this song, Jon decided to try it.
He experienced a flood of inspiration. “Never has a piano part come
together this fast” Jon says. Steve experienced similar inspiration
while composing the cello parts. Since the lyrics suggest a bride
walking towards the groom in a ceremony we thought we would include a
quote from the Bridal Chorus by Wagner in the climax of the song.
(It is carefully disguised).

The Piano Guys are an American musical group consisting of Jon Schmidt, Steven Sharp Nelson, Paul Anderson, and Al van der Beek.

They gained popularity through YouTube, where they posted piano and cello renditions of popular songs and classical music. Schmidt and Nelson’s music is accompanied by professional-quality videos shot and edited by Paul Anderson. 

Paul Anderson owned a piano shop in St. George, Utah. He met musician Jon Schmidt as the latter walked in to ask if he could practice there for an upcoming concert. Months later, Paul Anderson and Tel Stewart (then just for fun) started making videos together with Jon Schmidt. It was not too long after that they did their first collaboration with Jon Schmidt, Steven Sharp Nelson, and Al Van Der Beek as the studio and music technician. After the five of them started collaborating the group really started to take off, producing a music video each week and posting it to YouTube.

Several of the group’s YouTube videos have over 20 million views, while all of them have over 750,000. As of February 2014, The Piano Guys’ YouTube channel has over 345 million total video views and about 2,500,000 subscribers.

Since the beginning of The Piano Guys, “Lord of the Rings” has been our most requested work. As we reach one million subscribers we wanted to dedicate this arrangement to our “subs.” This was an intimidating project — encompassing the power and the beauty of the many musical themes throughout the movies; capturing the emotion and the “epic” nature of the story; and all with a few cellos, a piano, and a couple Canon 5D Mark IIs.

We normally write our tunes during intense compositional binges — the bulk of our songs have been written within the period of a few days. This one was different. It was a drawn-out process during which we studied the music of The Lord of Rings, contemplated what themes to incorporate, how they could tell the story by flowing from one to the other. We also spent a lot of time finding new ways to imitate instruments from various sections of the orchestra using Steve’s cellos — from the brass section through the woodwind section to the percussion section.

We love the story of The Lord of the Rings. It is a tale that has spiritual meaning for us. We love its messages — that “even the smallest person can change the course of the future,” that “there’s good in this world and it’s worth fighting for,” “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us” … and that everyone should have a “second breakfast.” We love the poignant depiction of loyalty between the Fellowship of the Ring (we even included the “Fellowship” theme three times – at 0:18, 3:58 and at the end of the arrangement – to feel like a common thread in the music as it is in the story.)

We wanted to paint these messages musically as vividly as possible. Like so many things in the creative realm, and to paraphrase Mr. Bilbo Baggins, the hardest part was the first step. After a brief introduction of the Hobbit Theme and Fellowship Theme (arguably the most relevant musical moments) we felt strongly that we needed to begin with the deeply touching melody that serves as the soundtrack to Arwen’s vision of her future son (in the extended version of Return of the King).

That gave way to a Divinely-led journey from the Shire and Rivendell through Isengard and Rohan to Gondor’s victory over Mordor. We endeavored to represent each of the major allies and opposing forces in the story:

The Piano Guys have the intention of playing their music at the seven wonders of the world. At the time of this writing, they have played at the Great Wall of China and. add to that, Christ the Redeemer in Brazil – Large Statue.
