PUERTO RICO UPDATE

”AN EXERCISE IN SURVIVIAL”

This is a post written by my very dear friend Suzy P., who currently lives in Illinois. She spent plenty years in Puerto Rico while her husband Grant worked there.

Suzy absorbed the Puerto Rican culture and ways as second nature.

Today, from a distance, she feels like we do.

Her soul and her heart ache as much as mine.

This is a thread written by her husband’s boss just one day ago.

Today, Oct 6th, Grant and I finally heard from Grant’s former boss in Moca, Puerto Rico. Frank was the plant manager for the Baxter Fenwal plant in San Germán for many years.

Frank is one of the most calm, capable, resourceful men that we know.

Grant spoke to Frank the night before Hurricane Maria hit and he was well prepared for the hurricane.

He tells us today that the past two weeks have been truly an exercise in survival.

Here is the series of text messages we got from Frank today

“Devastation here. No drinking water, running generator, gas supply (on the island) still stabilizing, cell signal now intermittent. We are OK. Bank access limited. Supermarkets having generator issues.

These first two weeks have been an exercise in survival.

Prioritization, focus, luck.”

Dominica Hurricane Maria

“Difficult environment. Eye passed over Moca, 35 minutes, second half horrible. Wind damage extensive in all west coast towns, Aguada, Aguadilla, flooding on coasts, massive erosion.

I’ve lost 11 pounds. Dehydration.

Nightmare scenario – we got nuked.

People helping each other.”

Erosion

“I have never seen or felt anything like this. During the height of the storm, I thought a few times we were history. It felt like a concussive force. And it wouldn’t stop. Rincón sustained significant damage.

Downed power lines, land slides, flooding.

Roads still marginal.”

MAria

After Grant offered to come down and help, Frank wrote:

“Don’t come here, you’ll never get out”.

(Some airlines report they have waiting lists of over 20,000 people wanting to leave the island).

Puerto Rico Faces Extensive Damage After Hurricane Maria

Please keep Puerto Rico’s ongoing humanitarian crisis in the news.

BEING FACETIOUS

When people, because of their words and actions, don’t earn the respect of others, they earn derision and rejection.

To cite a few, such is  the case of ‘Lord Cheeto‘- PEEOTUS, ‘Kellyanne Con-Job‘ -Chief Counselor to PEEOTUS and ‘Sean Spitter‘ – Press Secretary.

They live in an alternate reality and have even coined ‘alternative facts’.

When that is the case,  be ready to receive push-back.

It you dish it out, be ready to take it!

Kellyanne Conway cites ‘Bowling Green massacre’ that never happened to defend travel ban

Kellyanne Con-Job has taken “alternative facts” to a new level.

During a Thursday interview with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews, the counselor to the president defended President Trump’s travel ban related to seven majority-Muslim countries.

At one point, Conway made a reference to two Iraqi refugees whom she described as the masterminds behind “the Bowling Green massacre.”

“Most people don’t know that because it didn’t get covered,” Conway said.

The Bowling Green massacre didn’t get covered because it didn’t happen.

There has never been a terrorist attack in Bowling Green, Ky., carried out by Iraqi refugees or anyone else.

A Puerto Rican Moment …. “It Happens …. Boricua Tools”!!

PUERTO RICAN TOOLS OF DISCIPLINE

“Gancho, chancla, correa y mata-moscas”

As a young child, living in Puerto Rico, in the 50’s, before “parental child abuse” became the issue it is today, I am familiar with one and all of these tools.

There was no way I could talk back to my parents; mostly my Mom.

Her “tools” would come out in a flash.

It could be any of them.

If she didn’t have them close by, the “hand” would suffice.

Try that now!

Something to think about …. “Before Judging …. Walk in their Shoes”!!

Judge

~~August 6, 2015~~

A WALK IN MY SHOES

Walk in my shoes just one step,

you will feel my pain and how

I have silently wept.

Walk in my shoes just one foot,

you will feel how I struggle every day

to stay strong and be tough as wood.

Walk in my shoes, just one yard,

you will feel my heart ache and

be able to empathize how some

days are truly hard.

Walk in my shoes, just one mile,

you will feel the frustration I feel in

having to keep a phony smile.

Walk in my shoes for a day,

you will suffer the pain I feel,

when the judgment you subtly pass

is so obvious to me.

Walk in my shoes for a week,

you will then come to realize

how much respect you really have for me.

No need to walk any further,

for you are able to step out of my shoes.

You will now know all the struggles

it takes to survive and all

the stress that is juggled.

Before you judge me, just try a walk

in my shoes,

even if it is for a moment.

For you will never know when you will

be wearing the same shoes too.
