PUERTO RICAN FLAG ON THE STATUE OF LIBERTY

Remembering.

No matter where my flag is placed, no other looks like her.

Her beauty, her colors, her meaning,

Like no other.

While many may think this image has been altered, it was not.

This is an actual photo taken on October 25, 1977 when a group of unarmed Puerto Rican activists gathered to protest demanding the release of Puerto Rican Nationalist prisoners.

This was an act of symbolism illustrating their hopes of freedom and independence in putting an end to the discrimination that Puerto Ricans were enduring.

On November 5, 2000, Puerto Rican activist, Alberto de Jesús Mercado, better known as Tito Kayak, along with five other protesters went to the top of the Statue of Liberty in New York City where he bravely placed the Puerto Rican flag on the statue’s crown.

On June 13, 2005, Kayak was arrested at the United Nations headquarters in New York City for attempting to switch the United Nations banner with the Puerto Rican flag, while the United Nations Special Committee met to discuss the political state of the island.

NOCHE DE SAN JUAN

San Juan is a festival celebrated on June 23rd, a magical night that welcomes the summer season

If I was younger, if I was in Puerto Rico, if circumstances were “normal”,

I would would have found an awesome stretch of beach.

There would have been a plan in place for friends, family and beachgoers to get together and celebrate in style.

Puerto Ricans alwys loook for an excuse to party.

What more would be better than celebrating this special night with those you love?

Of course you would always connect with those near your chosen spot and the party would get bigger and bigger.

One big group of people, free from worries, at least for one night, celebrating Puerto Rican culture.

I know it will happen tonight.

Anywhere there’s a Puerto Rican, there will be some sort of celebration.

Have to go out now and find one such celebration.

The celebration takes place during the shortest night of the year; the summer solstice. It is a celebration that is usually held on the beach with roaring bonfires, drinks, food and friends.

Legends, tradition and magical rituals are connected by a common elements: fire and water.

Some mystical people believe that on this magical night paranormal events can occur because ancient pagan gods get closer to humans. For this reason many magical rituals are celebrated. Young people jump over fires which, according to legend, gives more strength to the sun, which loses hours of light during the summer.

It is also a night full of Superstition.

If you want to be lucky for the next 12 months you may want to:

Jump over a bonfire
Burn a piece of paper with your lover’s name on it
Burn something old and personal to leave behind bad spirits from the past and start a new phase
Swimming in the ocean after midnight purifies soul and body
Fountains and natural water resources become magic and have healing properties

~ORIGINS~

Every region in Spain has different local traditions, however all of them are related to fire and water.
Dancing and praying around bonfires, and in some areas burning rag man, which originally symbolized Judas Iscariot.

Pagan and Religious tradition meet in this awesome celebration.

We ALL are ONE!!

I'm originally from Puerto Rico. I was born in Santurce and raised in Rio Piedras. I currently live in Florida - since 1999. I have a doctorate degree in Medicine; completed in 1976. My Internal Medicine specialty was completed in 1979. Worked for Puerto Rico's health system until 1985. At this time, I'm happily retired after working for the federal government for almost 28yrs. I also worked for the government of Puerto Rico from 1979 through 1985 .... for a total of almost 40 years as a physician. I want to offer any knowledge that I have to anyone "out there" who is interested. My views are liberal in almost every sense. My knowledge is "eclectic" - a bit of everything. Music and reading are my passion. Blogging has also become a very interesting endeavor. Metaphysical topics attract me. I'm interested in news - reporting human issues like injustice, discrimination and abuse - the "wrongly" affected. My intention is to bring this knowledge to an understandable level and to help anyone in need. I'm open to questions and will answer them to the best of my ability. Currently working on an enterprise whose main mission will be to bring peoples of all walks of life together. To be one .... since we ALL are ONE!! The future looks bright and promising!!!
