Taiwan Call

The president-elect broke with four decades of diplomatic practice by talking on the phone Friday with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, a breach of protocol that could disrupt U.S.-China ties before the inauguration.

The 10-minute phone call is believed to be the first time that a U.S. president or president-elect and a Taiwanese leader have spoken since the late 1970’s.

The United States formally recognized the government in Beijing as representing China in 1978 and has pursued a “One China” policy since 1972, when then-President Richard M. Nixon visited the country. But although the U.S. government ended official relations with Taiwan in 1979, U.S. presidential administrations have maintained unofficial ties with the island territory, which has become a thriving democracy in recent decades.

Philippines Call 

Trump’s phone call with Philippines leader deserves a lot more attention

President-elect Donald Trump’s telephone created plenty of news over the weekend – whether it was that “congratulatory” call with Taiwan’s leader, his tweets aimed at China, or even his criticism of SNL.

But there was another bit of news involving Trump’s phone that deserves a lot more attention – his call with Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte.

“In a statement Saturday, Duterte shared details of a seven-minute conversation that took place Friday, December 2. He said that during the call, Trump endorsed his campaign against drug users and dealers – a campaign that has left at least 4,500 Filipinos dead in about five months. Trump told Duterte that he was doing it the ‘right way,’ according to Duterte’s account,” the Washington Post writes.

And Reuters reports that, on that Friday call, Trump invited Duterte to the White House, according to a Philippines official.

Google Doodle celebrates Lunar New Year 2015

GOOGLE has marked Lunar New Year with a Doodle on its homepage.

The animation shows a ram head-butting a tree until a bee flies out – causing firecrackers to go off and a series of fireworks to spell out “Google“.

This refers to the Chinese celebration of Lunar New Year, which marks today as the beginning of the Year of the Ram.

Chinese New Year is not only celebrated in China. 

It is also observed in countries with significant Chinese populations, such as Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines.

There is some confusion over whether 2015 is in fact the Year of the Ram, or whether it is actually dedicated to the sheep or the goat.

This is because in Mandaring ‘yang’, meaning ‘horned animal’, covers all three – so nobody is sure which one it really is.

In Chinese culture the color red is considered lucky.

So the Lunar New Year is celebrated by decorating windows and doors with red colored Chinese paper cuttings, as well as couplets with themes of ‘good fortune’, ‘happiness’, ‘wealth’ or ‘longevity’.

Why Google has given the shortest day of the year a doodle?

Google has marked the shortest day of the year with an animated Doodle on its homepage.
The Doodle depicts a cartoon Father Christmas helping two children to build a snowman before the children’s mother appears and produces a carrot from her shopping bag to use as the snowman’s nose.

The winter solstice occurs when the sun’s daily maximum elevation in the sky is at its lowest and the North Pole is tilted furthest away from the sun. This results in the least number of daylight hours and the longest night of the year. This astronomical phenomenon occurs in December in the Northern Hemisphere and in June in the Southern Hemisphere.

The event has been marked by many cultures throughout history with festivals, rituals, celebrations and the mating of animals, and even today people gather at Stonehenge to watch the sunrise and sunset. The ancient stones are carefully aligned on a sight-line that points to the winter solstice sunset, and it is thought that this event was actually more important to those who constructed the site than the summer equivalent.
