How Trump’s comments unleashed ‘Latino Spring‘

Call it “Latino Spring.”
There were no mass demonstrations in the streets, but Latino protesters amassed online. Their focus? The hurtful anti-Mexican comments made by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

Latinos gathered in social media circles to condemn, plot and retaliate against Trump with such fervor in the past two weeks that they caused three multibillion dollar media companies to back away from him: Univision, NBC and Televisa.

The Latino community could not take this quietly, with actors and singers taking to the virtual streets to denounce Trump.

The honor roll of protesters began with J. Balvin, Roselyn Sánchez and Cristián de la Fuente of Colombian, Puerto Rican and Chilean heritage, respectively; all had been scheduled to participate in the Miss USA Pageant on July 12, but on principle dropped out. Cheryl Burke, Thomas Roberts and Natalie La Rose also stepped down from the telecast in solidarity with Latinos, and Mexico has withdrawn from the Miss Universe pageant.

Ricky Martin Joins Anti-Trump Effort, Nixes Charity Golf Tourney from Trump’s Golf Club in Puerto Rico

Ricky Martin is not only a world-class singer and performer, but he’s also a philanthropist, a supporter of marriage equality and gay rights. When he heard Donald’s hurtful comments about Mexican immigrants, he couldn’t allow himself to be professionally associated with someone who preaches such ignorance and negativity to the world.
Martin has pulled the annual Ricky Martin Foundation charity golf event at the Trump International Golf Club Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, according to a press release.

The Puerto Rican Grammy and Latin Grammy winner is joining the anti-Donald Trump movement along with Macy’s, Univision, NBC Universal and Televisa as well as fellow entertainers Roselyn Sanchez and J Balvin in cutting off business affiliations and/or ties to Trump.

Martin’s tweet was sparked by Univision taking the initiative to drop the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants after the Republican candidate’s derogatory campaign speech.

“When Mexico sends its people they’re not sending the best,” Trump said. “They’re not sending you, they’re sending people that have lots of problems and they’re bringing those problems.

They’re bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime.

They’re rapists and some, I assume, are good people, but I speak to border guards and they’re telling us what we’re getting.”

The avid social media user, who has millions of followers, first shared his thoughts on Trump’s out-of-line rant, denouncing his comments on Twitter.

“A lot of hatred and ignorance in your heart,” Martin wrote in Spanish.

“Hay mucha ignorancia y odio en tu corazón”.

Carlos Ponce (born September 4, 1972) is a Puerto Rican actor, singer, composer and television personality. Ponce began his acting career by participating in Spanish language soap operas for Televisa and Telemundo.

Ponce continued to expand his acting career by participating in various American television series. He did not limit himself solely to a career in television. Ponce, who is also a singer, is also active in the American movie industry as a character actor.

In 1998, Emilio Estefan Jr. and Kike Santander signed Ponce to a record contract. His first album was entitled Carlos Ponce, and included three of his own compositions. The album reached the #1 spot in the Latin Billboards for nine weeks in the Hispanic community of the United States. It also reached the #1 spot in Central America and South America. I'm originally from Puerto Rico. I was born in Santurce and raised in Rio Piedras. I currently live in Florida - since 1999. I have a doctorate degree in Medicine; completed in 1976. My Internal Medicine specialty was completed in 1979. Worked for Puerto Rico's health system until 1985. At this time, I'm happily retired after working for the federal government for almost 28yrs. I also worked for the government of Puerto Rico from 1979 through 1985 .... for a total of almost 40 years as a physician. I want to offer any knowledge that I have to anyone "out there" who is interested. My views are liberal in almost every sense. My knowledge is "eclectic" - a bit of everything. Music and reading are my passion. Blogging has also become a very interesting endeavor. Metaphysical topics attract me. I'm interested in news - reporting human issues like injustice, discrimination and abuse - the "wrongly" affected. My intention is to bring this knowledge to an understandable level and to help anyone in need. I'm open to questions and will answer them to the best of my ability.
