In one of the largest days of protest in U.S. history, millions took to the streets Saturday one day after the inauguration of Donald Trump. The largest protest was the Women’s March on Washington, where more than 500,000 packed the streets. According to crowd scientists at Manchester Metropolitan University in Britain, the crowd was roughly three times the size of the audience at President Trump’s inauguration a day earlier.

Women-led marches took place in over 600 locations spread across seven continents—including Antarctica. In addition to Washington, massive protests took place in Boston; Chicago; Denver; Los Angeles; Madison, Wisconsin; New York; Oakland; Portland, Oregon; St. Paul; San Francisco and Seattle. According to one count, as many as 4.6 million people took part in the global day of action.

Meryl Streep was the recipient of the Cecil B. deMille Award of the 74th Golden Globes. With eight Golden Globes and 29 nominations, Meryl Streep is an icon of the performing arts.

She was honored with the 2017 Cecil B. deMille Award at the 74th Annual Golden Globe® Awards on Sunday, January 8, 2017, hosted by Jimmy Fallon. 

Lorenzo Soria, President of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), made the announcement of Meryl Streep’s honor. Soria stated,

It’s no surprise that the HFPA has chosen Meryl Streep as the recipient of the 2017 Cecil B. DeMille Award.

Meryl’s enthralling body of work across a diverse set of genres has made her a role model over the past 40 years, and she will continue to do so for generations to come. She has always taken roles with strong female leads, creating art by showing vulnerability and portraying truth on the big screen.

Simply put, she is a trailblazer, having paved the way for women in television, film and stage.

For shattering gender and age barriers, all with finesse and grace, the HFPA is humbled to bestow this honor upon her.

For almost 40 years, Meryl Streep has portrayed an astonishing array of characters in a career that has cut its own unique path from the theater through film and television.

Streep was educated in the New Jersey public school system through high school, graduated cum laude from Vassar College, and received her MFA with honors from Yale University in 1975. When he wasn’t blocking people on Twitter or defending himself for talking to Taiwan on the phone, President-elect Donald Trump took time out of his schedule last week to retweet a 16-year-old who went on a rant about alleged, but completely unproven voter fraud.

That was the impetus for SNL’s cold open on Saturday when, after RTing the 16-year-old who was tweeting from his high school classroom, Trump, played by Alec Baldwin, looked at the camera and said,

“I really did retweet him. Seriously. This is true.”

Said senior adviser Kellyanne Conway, played by Kate McKinnon, while also looking into the camera,

“He really did do this.”

And SNL was there to explore what might have happened next.
