The undying spirit against adversity. My heart and soul have been aching since Hurricane María battered my country. The days after have been sadder as images come out of the utter devastation of a beautiful Caribbean Island.
The Puerto Rican spirit is battered but not broken after Maria.
“I would much rather be writing a song than jumping up and down and making noise.” Miranda said. He continued,
“And if the government’s response were commensurate with the people’s spirit and compassion we’d be on the road to recovery and ending this crisis so much faster.”
CLARE PALO
Lin-Manuel Miranda, the genius behind the musical “Hamilton,” has teamed up with Latin singers to create a touching song for Hurricane relief in Puerto Rico.
The Tony Award winner, 37, created “Almost Like Praying” in response to the severe need to relief in Puerto Rico, after islanders were left without running water, generators, food or electricity.
Miranda assembled an all-star cast of artists, including Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, Camila Cabello, Gloria Estefan, Rita Moreno, among others.
Proceeds of the track titled, “Almost Like Praying,” will go to the Hispanic Federation’s Hurricane Relief Fund, which is also working with New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio to help bring supplies to Puerto Rico.
The municipalities of Puerto Rico number seventy-eight incorporated towns and cities. Each municipality is led by a mayor and divided into barrios, though the latter are not vested with any political authority.
Every municipality is governed by the Autonomous Municipalities Act of 1991 which establishes that every municipality must have a strong mayor with a municipal legislature.

Every town in Puerto Rico is mentioned in this song.
The mastery of combining these names with the undertone of West Side Story’s María isn’t lost on any Puerto Rican.

In Time of Critical Need for LGBTQ Americans, “Give OUT Day” 2017 is today
San Francisco, CA, April 19, 2017
(GLOBE NEWSWIRE)
LGBTQ Americans are in a state of urgent need: an administration actively hostile to the community now occupies the White House; homophobic and transphobic hate crimes have spiked following the election; over 130 laws attacking LGBTQ rights are pending in state legislatures around the country; and the one-year anniversary of the horrific Pulse shooting in Orlando is fast approaching. In this difficult climate, Give OUT Day, a national day of giving for the LGBTQ community, will once again coordinate a 24-hour online fundraising event to support over 300 LGBTQ organizations across all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia.
Give OUT Day 2017 will take place on April 20, 2017 from 12:00 am to 11:59 pm Eastern. Last year, Give Out Day raised over $550,000.
Throughout the day-long event, thousands of people make gifts to support a diverse array of LGBTQ nonprofits, ranging from the arts to social services agencies, advocacy groups to sports leagues, and community centers to health care nonprofits.
Give OUT Dayis a project of Horizons Foundation.
Founded as a community foundation of, by, and for LGBTQ people, Horizons has been supporting LGBTQ nonprofit organizations, leaders, and donors for more than 35 years.
I’ve been working with an amazing company called Neste for the past year as a futurologist on a project called #PreOrderTheFuture.
I teamed up with them because it really aligned with what I’m passionate about; which is helping improve the future through technology, sustainability, and education. This project allowed people to submit their ideas that can help improve the future and NESTE would fund it.
This was an ambitious project but nevertheless, I believe a successful one.

#ShePersisted goes viral after Senate votes to silence Warren

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) inadvertently created a rallying cry for supporters of Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) when he rebuked her after the Senate voted to prevent her from speaking.
As Democrats held the Senate floor overnight to protest Sen. Jeff Sessions’s (R-Ala.) nomination for attorney general, Warren quoted a 1986 letter that the late Coretta Scott King, a civil rights activist and wife of Martin Luther King Jr., wrote opposing Sessions’s nomination for a federal judgeship at the time.
“Sen. Warren was giving a lengthy speech. She had appeared to violate the rule. She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted.”
The Senate voted 49-43 along party lines to prevent Warren from speaking on the Senate floor for the remainder of debate on Sessions’s nomination.
“Love is love is love is love is love is love is love is love, cannot be killed or swept aside,” Hamilton mastermind Lin-Manuel Miranda said, near tears, as he accepted his Tony award for Best Score.
“Now fill the world with music, love, and pride.”
