A four-month-old Iranian girl, scheduled to fly into Portland for a heart surgery appointment at OHSU had to postpone the procedure after Drumpf’s immigration order.

The infant, Fatemah, has a heart condition. Her family found out about it at a routine checkup, and her pediatricians say she needs to have surgery soon.

“They said ‘this is a miracle, we don’t know how she had lived with the big problem she had.’ Immediately she has to do the surgery,” her uncle, Samad Taghizadeh , told KATU News.

Taghizadeh lives in Portland with Fatemah’s grandparents; they are American citizens. The family chose to have the open-heart surgery at Oregon Health & Science University – which boasts one of the top pediatric cardiology programs in the U.S. – because facilities in Iran do not have the equipment necessary for such a procedure.

2016: A ROUGH YEAR

Unless anyone’s residence is under a rock (not for 365 days), we all know how rough this year has been.

As years come to an end, there’s usually the perennial hope that the new one will bring good tidings and better things than the one that just ended.

However, it’s my personal belief that, we are in for a rougher ride in 2017 and beyond.

I really hope that I’m proven so wrong.

These lost lives can’t be replaced.

They will live in history and in the memory of our generation.

Dignity and self-respect can’t be replaced either and it will be much harder to recover.

WARRIOR VERSUS WANNABE

The Donald may be the trump card that Republicans don’t know what to do with even with the frumpy grumpy’s ratings skyrocketing, there are telltale signs that the guy might not bode so well for the future of the USA.

As the Time magazine’s “blooper video” spells it out all too clearly, a 27-year-old bald eagle, portentously named “Uncle Sam”, categorically “attacked” the presidential hopeful in August this year, during a photo-shoot for the magazine’s cover-story on the “Person of the Year runner-up”!

Donald was seen dodging and grimacing as the eagle, which he had to hold in his hand for the shoot, lunged at him, messing up his perfectly done flaxen mop, and sending the magazine crew into a tizzy-cum-laughter riot.

All that Trump could manage to salvage the situation was: “What you will do for a cover – this bird is seriously dangerous but beautiful!”

A bird flew onto Sanders’ podium during his speech. The crowd went nuts.

“I know it doesn’t look like it, but that bird is really a dove asking us for world peace,” Sanders said. “No more wars.”

Sanders thought the interruption was symbolic.

UNCLE SAM: THE TIME HAS COME

A strong push to remove the Confederate battle flag from Capitol grounds in South Carolina and Alabama — as well as the shelves of major retailers — was sparked by the racially motivated killings of nine people inside a historic black church last week.

Long a controversial symbol, the flag can be seen in photos of the accused shooter, Dylann Roof. Roof, 21, used a “Stars and Bars” license plate holder on his car and can be seen waving the battle flag in other shots. Roof’s apparent embrace of the flag has energized its opponents and caused some politicians to rethink their previous support for its use.

Over the years, the Confederate battle flag has come to mean different things to different people in politics and pop culture. To many, it is emblematic of slavery, racism and the bloody battles that made the Civil War the deadliest conflict in U.S. history. But supporters of the flag say they see it as a memorial to slain Confederate soldiers.

In a long-sought victory for the gay rights movement, the Supreme Court ruled by a 5-to-4 vote on Friday, June 26, that the Constitution guarantees a right to same-sex marriage.

Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, writing for the majority in the historic decision, said gay and lesbian couples had a fundamental right to marry.

“No union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice and family,” he wrote. “In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were.”

The decision, which was the culmination of decades of litigation and activism, set off celebrations across the country and the first same-sex marriages in several states. It came against the backdrop of fast-moving changes in public opinion, with polls indicating that most Americans now approve of the unions.
