ONE YOUNG WOMAN

I came across the video included below yesterday.

Tears flowed on their own.

In my personal case, I wasn’t really aware about details related to the political status of North Korea. I knew only a bit.

In light of the prominence given to this country by the actions of the ‘so-called president’ as they relate to North Korea, I am paying more attention.

This is a ‘must watch’ video.

Even though the video was posted in 2014, most likely it still applies today.

Yeonmi Park has grown up to be a beautiful, free young woman!

North Korean woman, Yeonmi Park had a packed audience in tears as she relayed an account of her escape from ‘the darkest place in the world’ at the peace and conflict plenary session. The 21 year old said she was brainwashed by the propaganda of Kim Jong Il and three generations of imprisonment or execution was imposed on anyone that expressed doubt about the regime.

“North Korea is the only country in the world that executes people for making unauthorized international phone calls. North Koreans are being terrorized today,” said Park.

“When I was 9 years old, I saw my friend’s mother publicly executed. Her crime? Watching a Hollywood movie.There’s only one channel on TV. There’s no Internet. We aren’t free to move, sing, read, wear or think what we want,” Park continued. The repressive dictatorship led Park’s older sister to escape and gave Park and her mother no option but to escape themselves in order to find her sister. However as they escaped across the border, Yeonmi, at 13 years old witnessed her mother’s rape.

“I saw my mother raped. The rapist was a Chinese broker. I will never forget his face. The rapist had targeted me. I was only 13 years old,” said an emotional Park.

Park called on chinese One Young World delegates to speak out and petition china to stop repatriation, and called on everyone in attendance to support North Korean refugees that flee the country.

What followed was a standing ovation lasting over three minutes and many delegates leaving the auditorium red-eyed with tears, taking a moment to reflect on the atrocities of North Korea.

The Republican plan to repeal Obamacare and delay the implementation of the repeal – with a promise to come up with a terrific replacement later – is probably the party’s best way to destroy Obamacare.

Unfortunately for Republicans, it’s also the best way to destroy the Republican majority in Congress.

I wasn’t watching the Oscars last night.

I rarely do.

When I was getting ready to go to bed, I turned the TV on. Vice President Biden was intriduced and I was curious.

I watched Lady Gaga’s performance and was amazed by the power of it.

I then became aware that this was one of the songs nominated for an Oscar.

As I looked information up today, I found out what was behind what  watched.

Kudos to Vice President Biden, Lady Gaga, Diane Warren and all the survivors represented in this song.

Main message: the culture needs to change.

Sure hope so.

Lady Gaga has turned out some powerful performances recently, but she saved her best for the Oscars.

Gaga wrote the Oscar-nominated “Til It Happens to You” for The Hunting Ground, a harrowing documentary about sexual assault on college campuses. The singer has been actively and passionately involved in raising awareness for the issue, and has been open about how she, too, is a survivor of rape.

With studies indicating that 16-20% of women are sexually assaulted while attending college in the United States, more and more survivors are speaking about their experiences. As colleges strive to protect their brands and financial stability, assault victims often experience cover-ups by campus officials and police, but survivors continue to pursue their education and fight for changes in campus policies.

“Til It Happens to You” is a song produced and performed by American singer Lady Gaga. She co-wrote the song with Diane Warren for the 2015 documentary film The Hunting Ground, which deals with campus rape in the United States. The song had leaked onto the Internet through an unofficial recording made at the film’s premiere at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. It was later released by Interscope Records to digital retailers on September 18, 2015.

The director and producer of the film had looked for someone influential to write a song for it, and music supervisor Bonnie Greenberg contacted Warren who was interested. After writing the song, Warren asked Gaga to record “Til It Happens to You“. Producer Nile Rodgers accompanied them during the recording, providing his suggestions.

A universal song about any kind of loss in life, the track was placed during two sequences in the film, highlighting the pain of sexual assault. The song consists of an orchestral production with strings, and an emotional vocal delivery from Gaga. Lyrically it asks listeners to stand in a victim’s position and try to understand the turmoil they go through. “Til It Happens to You” was later included as part of a public service announcement video directed by Catherine Hardwicke. The video depicts various instances of violence against women and sexual assaults. It ends with a cautionary note about the effects of such distress, and individuals finding solace with their close friends and relatives.

Gaga appeared from behind a frame and sitting at a piano.

She dramatically delivered the ballad that built up as a string orchestra joined in. The performance climactically ended with a group of sexual assault survivors surrounding Gaga at the piano with the words “Not Your Fault” written on their arms. Both Gaga and Warren are survivors of sexual assault.

Gaga, a first-time Academy Award nominee, performed at the Oscars last year during a 50th anniversary tribute to The Sound of Music. Over the last month, she has sung the National Anthem at Super Bowl 50 and paid tribute to David Bowie at the Grammy Awards. She is working with Warren on songs for her as-yet-untitled fifth studio album.

Can’t deny any of this ….

As I read this, I think back to a time when I wasn’t aware of this. Before that time I thought that all was perfect. Ah, the blessing of ignorance or misinformation.

There was a time when I thought there were principles to follow, there were ethics to adhere to. There was a definite line between right and wrong.

Where did it all go? When did it all change? Was it always like this?

Was I naive and ignorant of the reality that surrounded me?

Doctors, lawyers, universities, government, press, religion, banks. 

All entities with power, all entities that have been entrusted with overseeing some sort of welfare of the masses.

When did it become corrupt?

Is there anyway to make it right again? 

I wonder …..

“…It’s NOT the greatest country in the world, Professor. That’s my answer.

Fine. Sharon, the NEA is a loser. Yeah, it accounts for a penny out of our paycheck, but he gets to hit you with it anytime he wants. It doesn’t cost money. It costs votes. It costs airtime. And column inches. You know why people don’t like liberals? Because they lose. If liberals are so fuckin’ smart then how come they lose so goddamn always?

And with a straight face, you’re gonna sit there and tell students that America is so star-spangled awesome that we’re the only ones in the world who have freedom? Canada has freedom. Japan has freedom. The U.K. France. Italy. Germany. Spain. Australia. BELGIUM has freedom. Two hundred and seven sovereign states in the world, like, a hundred and eighty of them have freedom.

And you, Sorority Girl, just in case you accidentally wander into a voting booth one day, there’s some things you should know. One of them is there’s absolutely no evidence to support the statement that we’re the greatest country in the world. We’re seventh in literacy. Twenty-seventh in math. Twenty-second in science. Forty-ninth in life expectancy. A hundred and seventy-eighth in infant mortality. Third in median household income. Number four in labor force and number four in exports. We lead the world in only three categories: Number of incarcerated citizens per capita, number of adults who believe angels are real, and defense spending, where we spend more than the next twenty-six countries combined, twenty-five of whom are allies.

Now none of this is the fault of a twenty-year-old college student, but you nonetheless are without a doubt a member of the worst, period, generation, period, ever, period. So when you ask what makes us the greatest country in the world, I dunno what the fuck you’re talkin’ about.

Sure used to be. We stood up for what was right. We fought for moral reasons. We passed laws, struck down laws, for moral reasons. We waged wars on poverty, not poor people. We sacrificed. We cared about our neighbors. We put our money where our mouths were. And we never beat our chest.

We built great big things, made ungodly technological advances, explored the universe, cured diseases, and we cultivated the world’s greatest artists and the world’s greatest economy. We reached for the stars. Acted like men.

We aspired to intelligence. We didn’t belittle it, it didn’t make us feel inferior.

We didn’t identify ourselves by who we voted for in the last election, and we didn’t, oh, we didn’t scare so easy. Ha. We were able to be all these things and do all these things because we were informed. By great men. Men who were revered. First step in solving any problem is recognizing there is one. America is not the greatest country in the world anymore. Enough?”
