War Peace Better | It Is What It Is

A combined message: war, peace, rich folks, soldiers, timeless.

I found this graphic this morning as I browsed through the postings in Facebook. The reason I chose to post it is that even though this man lived from 1912 through 1967, I consider these words timeless.

I assume that he lived through WWII, Korea and Vietnam and all the conflicts and “skirmishes” that happened during his life time.

Yet, these words could very easily apply to our current times.

If only ….. this would happen.

Woodrow Wilson “Woody” Guthrie (July 14, 1912 – October 3, 1967) was an American singer-songwriter and folk musician whose musical legacy includes hundreds of political, traditional and children’s songs, ballads and improvised works. He frequently performed with the slogan This Machine Kills Fascists displayed on his guitar. His best-known song is “This Land Is Your Land.”

Many of his recorded songs are archived in the Library of Congress. Such songwriters as Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Bruce Springsteen, Robert Hunter, Harry Chapin, John Mellencamp, Pete Seeger, Andy Irvine, Joe Strummer, Billy Bragg, Jerry Garcia, Jay Farrar, Bob Weir, Jeff Tweedy, Bob Childers and Tom Paxton have acknowledged Guthrie as a major influence.

Many of his songs are about his experiences in the Dust Bowl era during the Great Depression when Guthrie traveled with displaced farmers from Oklahoma to California and learned their traditional folk and blues songs, earning him the nickname the “Dust Bowl Troubadour.”

Throughout his life Guthrie was associated with United States Communist groups, though he was seemingly not a member of any.

Empathy is the capacity to recognize emotions that are being experienced by another sentient or fictional being. One may need to have a certain amount of empathy before being able to experience accurate sympathy or compassion.

Palestine is a geographic region in Western Asia between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River. It is sometimes considered to include adjoining territories. The name was used by Ancient Greek writers, and was later used for the Roman province Syria Palaestina, the Byzantine Palaestina Prima and the Umayyad and Abbasid province of Jund Filastin. The region is also known as the Land of Israel, the Holy Land, the Southern Levant, Cisjordan, and historically has been known by other names including Canaan, Southern Syria and Jerusalem.

Situated at a strategic location between Egypt, Syria and Arabia, and the birthplace of Judaism and Christianity, the region has a long and tumultuous history as a crossroads for religion, culture, commerce, and politics.

Israel is a country in Western Asia, situated at the southeastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea. It shares land borders with Lebanon to the north, Syria in the northeast, Jordan on the east, the Palestinian territories (or State of Palestine) comprising the West Bank and Gaza Strip on the east and southwest respectively, Egypt and the Gulf of Aqaba in the Red Sea to the south, and it contains geographically diverse features within its relatively small area. In its Basic Laws, Israel defines itself as a Jewish and Democratic State; it is the world’s only Jewish-majority state.

I’m very much aware that they are posed pictures. Imagine for a second that they are real children of both countries. What difference can you see? I think none. They are sweet spirits on this Earth and adults are messing them up.

That can’t continue.

I do not pretend to say I am an expert at the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Neither am I a scholar of the dynamics, politics of the region. I know about the existence of the countries and the fact that they have been at war “forever”. I do not know the details behind the politics of now or of the past. I do not claim to know what are the precise reasons for the persistent conflict.

I think I do know about humanity because I am a member of this group. I like to think that I have “empathy” for other human beings. It doesn’t matter to me which countries are involved. I understand the suffering anyone in that situation could be feeling. I wouldn’t want to be there.

I see the death toll climb, I see graphic pictures of the human loss, I see the destruction of the country: hospitals, schools, infrastructure.

Irregardless of political views ….. this continues to be wrong!!
