Mni Wiconi (Lakota for “Water is Life”)

A few weeks ago, early January, the Hollywood sign altered to read ‘Hollyweed‘.

Armed with four tarpaulins, a prankster had climbed Mount Lee under the cover of night to edit the iconic landmark, and changed it to “HOLLYWeeD.”

Wouldn’t it have been awesome if, instead, it read ‘Mni Wiconi’?

Dakota Access Pipeline

What happens next?

On Sunday afternoon, December 4, tribe members and their allies cried tears of joy after the US Army said it would not – for now – allow the pipeline to cross under Lake Oahe in North Dakota.
The Army says the plan should be carefully restudied, and alternative routes should be more deeply considered.

The Army’s statement does not rule out approval for the current plan in the future. And with President Obama leaving office in January, many questions still remain about what’s next for the project.

Many people would agree that prayer alone will not solve all of our problems, but to the water protectors at Standing Rock, direct action is considered sacred. Prayer can be action. To live one’s life as if it were a prayer is a very powerful way to engage in the world around us.

Indigenous spirituality acknowledges that all of life is interconnected through nature, knowing that humans have a responsibility to steward and protect the land. Standing Rock’s resistance to the Dakota Access Pipeline has become globally symbolic of the struggle to protect our environment from the heartless exploitation of extraction industries that threaten water, land, air, and life itself.

For the first time in history, we are seeing a unified global movement to stand and act in solidarity with our indigenous relatives to protect the sacred.

Double Standards

Why can’t all see that there is no difference between one and the other?

Why continue the destruction/decimation of a nation?

Why the lack of respect?

Because the white man has always felt to be above anyone other than himself.

The disconnect is obvious.

The disparity in full few.

It’s time to correct it.

Dave Meyers is the owner of 8,100 acres that the DAPL pipeline will be crossing to get to the Missouri River or Lake Oahe. During the last week of August, he was wondering if there was any Indian graves that might be disturbed by the construction of the pipeline.

To satisfy his curiosity, he asked Tim Mentz to assess the “corridor” route that was going to be used to host the buried pipeline. Dave Meyers was fully aware that an environmental assessment (EI) had been performed by the State Historic Preservation Office, however, these are non-Indian experts, whereas, Tim owns a company called Makoche Wowapi. His business consults Tribes regarding their archeological inheritance.

In addition, Tim previously worked as a Tribal and State Historic Preservation Officer since 1985.

With Tim’s knowledge and skill, he walked the area as allowed.

On Sunday, August 29, 2016, Tim and his sons found 82 significant historical marking, of which 27 were grave locations.

“ We found two places where rocks were set in a circular pattern with openings to the west, as well as other effigy designs.” Every site was professionally identified and precisely charted by computer for exact location by GPS.

To the untrained eye, walking the prairie on Mr. Meyer’s property everywhere is tall grass with some stone outcroppings now and then, but Tim Mentz’s trained eyes discovered shapes that just could not have happened in nature.

In fact, the stones had to be placed by the hand of thinking men. Intelligent men, who wanted to convey a story or to leave traditions of significance for the people.

WATER IS LIFE 

The Hopi are a Native American tribe, who primarily live on the 2,531.773 sq miles Hopi Reservation in northeastern Arizona.

The Hopi language is one of the 30 of the Uto-Aztecan language family. The majority of Hopi people are enrolled in the Hopi Tribe of Arizona but some are enrolled in the Colorado River Indian Tribes.

When first encountered by the Spanish in the 16th century, the Hopi and the surrounding cultures were referred to as Pueblo people, because they lived in villages (pueblos in the Spanish language).

The Hopi are descended from the Ancient Pueblo Peoples (Hopi: Hisatsinom or Navajo: Anasazi) who constructed large apartment-house complexes in northeastern Arizona, northwestern New Mexico, and southwestern Colorado.

They lived along the Mogollon Rim, especially from the 12th–14th century, when they abandoned their large villages.

The name Hopi is a shortened form of their autonym, Hopituh Shi-nu-mu

What is the difference between Arlington Cemetery and the Native American Sacred Burial Grounds??

Really, truly … what is the difference?

Can anyone venture and tell me there’s a difference?

Where’s the outrage, the scrutiny and the mainstream media coverage?

The Recognition of Native American sacred sites in the US could be described as:

“specific, discrete, narrowly delineated location on Federal land that is identified by an Indian tribe, or Indian individual determined to be an appropriately authoritative representative of an Indian religion, as sacred by virtue of its established religious significance to, or ceremonial use by, an Indian religion”.

The sacred places are believed to “have their own ‘spiritual properties and significance'”. Ultimately, Indigenous peoples who practice their religion at a particular site, they hold a special and sacred attachment to that land sacred land.

NATIVE AMERICAN YOUTH

I’m 13 years-old and as an enrolled member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, I’ve lived my whole life by the Missouri River. It runs by my home in Fort Yates North Dakota and my great grandparents original home was along the Missouri River in Cannon Ball. The river is a crucial part of our lives here on the Standing Rock Reservation.

But now a private oil company wants to build a pipeline that would cross the Missouri River less than a mile away from the Standing Rock Reservation and if we don’t stop it, it will poison our river and threaten the health of my community when it leaks.

In Dakota/Lakota we say “mni Wiconi.” Water is life.

Native American people know that water is the first medicine not just for us, but for all human beings living on this earth.
