A few nights ago, I was working of the last post of the day and found this wonderful song performed by The Piano Guys (Jon Schmidt) and Peter & Evynne Hollens.
“We were inspired by this song because it was originally written as a tribute to Chris’ fiance who suffered a brain injury as the result of a car accident.
Chris wouldn’t abandon her when she needed him most — the lyrics are beautiful, filled with poetic promises.”

Christopher Edward “Chris” Medina (born November 30, 1983) is an American singer born in Chicago, Illinois.
“What Are Words” is a hit song written by Rodney Jerkins, Andre Lindal and Lauren Christy, and performed by American singer Chris Medina. It was released on February 25, 2011, the day after his surprising elimination on the reality TV show American Idol.
The song is a tribute to his fiance who suffered a brain injury as the result of a car wreck and is about promises, commitment and keeping your word.
The music video was shot at Atlantis studios in Hollywood and was released days after the single. The video depicts Medina in the actual recording session alongside Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins and LaShawn Daniels.
Clips from Medina’s American Idol audition and personal videos showing Medina and his fiance at their home together are also included.
Medina performed the ballad on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on February 28, 2011 and on Good Morning America on March 4, 2011 as well as twice in Norway in June 2011.

This inspired me to research and watched the original version by Chris Medina on YouTube. It’s an incredibly touching and tender tribute to his soul mate. Even though they are no longer a couple, the lyrics depict the profound love that can be found in life. Change can happen anytime. In the flashing speed of a second, in a minute … and it can be permanent.

The song “What Are Words”
On the day after his elimination, February 25, 2011, “What Are Words,” recorded for Simon Cowell’s record label 19 Recordings, was released worldwide.
Medina stated publicly the song is about his fiancée, Juliana Ramos, who suffered a brain injury as the result of a serious car accident on October 2, 2009, two months before they were to be married, and the story line was heavily used during his American Idol tryout, even being brought on the show to emphasize the powerful nature of the song. (Medina has since admitted publicly that Ramos had been drinking, driving erratically as well as texting, and as a result the accident was her fault.
As of mid 2014, Ramos and Medina are no longer a couple, but they will “forever be soul-mates”.
