THANKFUL TO THIS DAY OF HIS LEADING EXAMPLE

If you go back in time and realize the overall atmosphere and environment around the LGBTQ community in this nation, you will realize the Harvey Milk was a groundbreaking figure.

To this day, his effect is still felt.

More so in the 2018 midterm elections when a significant number of LGBTQ candidates achieved their goal of being elected to the post they were running for.

“It’s not my victory, it’s yours and yours and yours”

Harvey Milk said after winning a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in late 1977.

“If a gay can win, it means there is hope that the system can work for all minorities if we fight. We’ve given them hope.”

A year after delivering that speech and making history as the first openly gay elected official in California – and one of the first in the country – Milk was gunned down at San Francisco City Hall on Nov. 27, 1978.

He was just 48.

But during his short time in office, Milk made his mark. He helped to pass the country’s first gay rights ordinance, which sparked the legal LGBTQ-rights revolution that has since resulted in a nationwide right to same-sex marriage and an increasing number of LGBTQ-rights protections in cities and states across the country.
Milk also undoubtedly inspired future generations of LGBTQ Americans to enter politics.

Earlier this month, 40 years after his death and decades after his history-making election, a record-breaking “rainbow wave” of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans followed in his footsteps by running for office and winning.

Michael Bublé joined James Corden in the Carpool Karaoke lane to support a cause near and dear to his heart. First broadcast in the UK as part of a Stand Up to Cancer special, the Canadian crooner spoke to the Late Late Show host about his son Noah, who was previously diagnosed with cancer in 2016.

Bublé said that when they received the news about his son Noah’s cancer diagnosis in 2016, his “whole life ended.”

“It’s so hard to have to acknowledge it because it’s so painful to talk about,” he said.

Holding back tears, he talked about what his family went through and how all of them moved to California to get the best treatment for Noah, who has since been in remission.

“When this all started, I became the strength to somehow pull us and lift us and to be positive,” Buble told Corden.

“When they got the cancer out and the chemo was done and they said, ‘We did it, it’s good, he’s okay,’ I fell, I just fell. My wife picks me up now.”

Bublé encouraged viewers to contribute to Stand Up to Cancer before he and Corden ended the emotional Carpool Karaoke session with a stirring rendition of “Home.”

The pilot who orchestrated a dramatic plane landing in the Hudson River nearly 10 years ago encouraged Americans to vote in next week’s midterm elections in a Washington Post op-ed published Monday, October 29, writing that “we cannot wait for someone to save us.”
“The fabric of our nation is under attack, while shame – a timeless beacon of right and wrong – seems dead,” Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, whose “Miracle on the Hudson” landing in 2009 spared the lives of all 155 passengers aboard, writes.

“This is not the America I know and love.

We’re better than this.”

The op-ed comes toward the close of a wrenching political season marked by divisive language, conspiracy theories and race-baiting attacks, from Drumpf to local leaders.

“We cannot wait for someone to save us.

We must do it ourselves.

This Election Day is a crucial opportunity to again demonstrate the best in each of us by doing our duty and voting for leaders who are committed to the values that will unite and protect us,” Sullenberger writes nearly a week before next week’s elections.

Following the 2009 landing, Sullenberger says that he realized his fame had given him “a greater voice.”

“I knew I could not walk away but had an obligation to use this bully pulpit for good and as an advocate for the safety of the traveling public,” he writes.

Oprah Winfrey has lent her star power to Stacey Abrams, the Georgia Democrat aiming to become America’s first black female governor in the midterm elections next week.

“I am here today because Stacey Abrams cares about the things that matter,” Winfrey told a cheering crowd at a Cobb County town hall, citing Abrams’ stance on environmental protection, healthcare and gun control.

Winfrey, who said she is a registered independent, has long championed Democratic Party causes and some fans earlier this year tried to encourage her to run against Drumpf in 2020.

She has said she does not want to run.

“I’m here today because of the men and because of the women who were lynched, who were humiliated, who were discriminated against, who were suppressed, who were repressed and oppressed … I refuse to let their sacrifices be in vain,” she told the audience, to cheers.

Abrams’ Republican rival, Brian Kemp, serves as Georgia secretary of state, a role in which he oversees state elections. Earlier this month, a coalition of state civil rights groups sued Kemp, accusing him of trying to depress minority voter turnout to improve his chances of winning.

This is a topic which is very dear and close to my heart.

As a retired physician, I fully understand the process, the need for treatment, the underlying medical conditions and the meaning of life-saving treatment.

On the other hand, my only brother died of complications of chronic renal failure several years ago. In the aftermath of Hurricane María, I often thought about him and how he would manage to receive this three times a week treatment when the electrical power situation and the hospital care was so lacking in my country.

One year after Hurricane María, Puerto Ricans living in Vieques, go through harrowing, uncomfortable, tiring, exhausting and dangerous ways to receive their treatment.

This video explains their situation.

In this new series, the family of late Animal Planet star Steve Irwin (“Crocodile Hunter”) continue his legacy of educating viewers about animals like koalas, snakes, crocodiles and more.

The series features Irwin’s daughter Bindi, 20, his son Robert, 14, and their mom Terri, 54.

“Crikey!” is filmed at the Irwin family’s zoo in Queensland, Australia. It will occasionally feature clips of Steve Irwin, who died after being stung by a stingray while filming a documentary in 2006.
