Prince Harry’s Invictus Games Come to an End

“This Has Never Been About the Medals”

The Invictus Games have come to an end, and so we must say goodbye (for now) to Prince Harry.

The redheaded royal closed out his Paralympic-style games Thursday. May 12, 2016,  after five days of tough, but fun sporting events. The five-day event in Orlando, Florida, might have come to an end, but Prince Harry reflected on the week’s emotional moments to help keep the spirit alive.

“Wow, what a ride the last four days has been – I said you would be moved, inspired and entertained – was I right? As the great Stevie Wonder says: Team work makes the dream work!” he began his closing speech.

But what he wanted everyone- competitors and viewers alike- to remember, was that the message behind the event was far more important than the medals handed out.

“I’ve been hugely honored to hand out gold silver and bronze medals over the course of this competition, but what meant the most to me, was handing out your Invictus Foundation medallions this evening,” he continued.

The competition has been fierce with performances of the highest international standard across a number of events.

But what inspired me, was the courage to make it to the starting line, to take to the field or to dive into that pool, motivated by the goal of giving your all – medal or no medal.”

Whether someone won or lost, Prince Harry reminded each person what his participation really meant.

“You showed your families, your friends and yourselves, just how far you’ve come, regardless of the result,” he said. “I know by your nature you all want to win, but these games are so much more than that – Invictus is so much more than that.”

The Queen slapped down US President Obama in an incredible video with her grandson Prince Harry to raise awareness of the Invictus Games.

In the hilarious footage, Harry and HRH are seen sitting on a sofa in Buckingham Palace, when the prince gets a call from Michelle Obama.

The ringtone?

US presidential anthem ‘Hail To The Chief’, naturally.

Then he picks up and receives a video showing the First Lady with President Barack Obama.

She says: “Hey Prince Harry remember when you told us to bring it at the Invictus Games?”

President Obama chips in with: “Careful what you wish for.”

Then an American competitor in the ‘Olympics for injured servicemen’ stood behind them makes a mic-dropping gesture and says: “Boom.”

He also told Andrew Marr about how his experiences while serving in Afghanistan – and the injuries that he witnessed fellow soldiers endure – were a “turning point” in his life.
But he played down comparisons between his charity and campaigning work and that of his late mother, Princess Diana.
He also spoke about the intrusion into his private life is “incessant”.

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Invictus Games were created to honor, educate and inspire, and the Opening Ceremony of this year’s event delivered the message with flying colors.

First lady Michelle Obama, Britain’s Prince Harry and Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman delivered stirring speeches after performances from the U.S. Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon, U.S. Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps, soprano Laura Wright and singer-songwriter James Blunt.

“Let’s put on a hell of a show in honor of our fallen comrades who didn’t make it,” Prince Harry said.

“We are Invictus.”

The most powerful moment arguably belonged to U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Israel Del Toro Jr., who took the stage to a standing ovation and silenced the crowd with the story of his injury and subsequent months long coma and rehabilitation.

He described how he was severely burned when his vehicle struck a land mine in Afghanistan in 2005, followed by an arduous road to recovery.

Del Toro said the only time he doubted his resolve was when he saw his scarred face and worried how son Israel Del Toro III, who was 3 years old at the time, would react. Del Toro thanked wife Carmen and Izzy, now 13, for their love and care.

Most of the 10,000 or so spectators stood for the entire roll call of 14 participating nations — Afghanistan, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, France, Georgia, Germany, Italy, Jordan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States — as nearly 500 competitors and their families entered Champion Stadium at the Walt Disney World Resort.

What an incredible start to the Invictus Games 2016 – the spectacular opening ceremony in Orlando launches four days of sporting competition between injured servicemen and women and veterans from 14 countries.

During the games, more than 500 competitors from countries including Italy, Germany, Australia, Estonia, Jordan and the UK and Afghanistan will compete in 10 events – archery, indoor rowing, powerlifting, road cycling, sitting volleyball, swimming, athletics, wheelchair basketball, rugby and tennis.

A round of good-natured Twitter trash talk has erupted among the head of the British royal family and the leaders of the United States and Canada. And the Internet appears to be charmed by the tit-for-tat videos by Queen Elizabeth II, President Obama and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada.

It was all part of an effort to promote the 2016 Invictus Games.

The choreographed challenges began Friday, April 29, 2016. when Mr. Obama and his wife, Michelle, tweeted a short video at Prince Harry. It showed them standing with their arms crossed over their chests in front of a line of three uniformed officers, looking as if they had a bone to pick with the royal family.

The inaugural Invictus Games in London 2014 used the power of sport to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and generate a wider understanding and respect for wounded, injured and sick Servicemen and women.

The Invictus Games Foundation has been set up to develop this legacy, manage the process of selecting the hosts of future games and oversee their delivery. The next Invictus Games will take place in Orlando, 8th-12th May 2016 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. 

Prince Harry recently announced that the Invictus story will continue and that there will be a third Invictus Games in Toronto, Canada in September 2017.

LA-based fitness photographer Michael Stokes is putting a different spin on how wounded veterans are depicted. He’s raising money on Kickstarter for a book called “Always Loyal” that features stunning photos of 14 U.S. Army, Navy and Marine Corps veterans of the Iraq War, Gulf War, and War in Afghanistan.

Stokes told The Huffington Post that an interaction about two years ago with a veteran wounded in Afghanistan inspired the idea for his new book.

“I met this veteran, Alex Minsky, and talked to him about different approaches to a portrait session,” said Stokes. “I had already studied as many amputee photos that I could find. I noticed that most of them emphasized the lost limb, and that the mood was often sorrowful. That was not the vibe I was getting from him, so I decided to simply photograph him as if he were not an amputee, photograph him exactly the same way I would any of my fitness models.”

The result?

Minsky found fame as a model, and a new passion was born for Stokes. The photographer has so far raised more than $260,000 on Kickstarter for his two books, well above the goal of $48,250. One, called “Exhibition,” features fitness models as well as veterans, while “Always Loyal” — titled after the English translation of the Marine Corps motto “Semper Fidelis” — features 14 vets. 

 “Some people will say to me ’Oh, this is really helpful to the veterans’ self-esteem,’ or, ’You’re making them feel like men again,’” Stokes told MTV. “

The response I have to that is that these guys have come to me very healed and ready to take the world on. I’m not giving them back their confidence. They already have it.”

Soon, you’ll be able to purchase a hardcover book featuring large glossy images of wounded veterans — but these aren’t your typical photos!

“If they want to be on the cover of romance novels, I can make that happen,” Stokes told The Telegraph.

In 2012, professional photographer Michael Stokes took snapshots of a US Marine who had survived a bombing in Afghanistan. The marine had lost part of his leg in the explosion, but his confidence prompted Stokes to shoot the photo in a more sensual style — focusing on the beauty of his figure rather than the amputation. Inspired by the marine, Stokes featured a chapter on wounded vets in a book he released last year called Bare Strength. Now, this year, he’s started a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for two new books of photography — one of which exclusively features wounded vets.

These titillating images are not your traditional stereotype of dashing military men in full uniform and buzz cuts. The warriors in these photos are wounded, scarred, and missing limbs, but they’re incredibly fit, well-muscled, often draped with tattoos, and, well — smokin’ hot. The book features 13 men and 1 woman.

Each model had a say in how they posed, and Stokes helped them decide. This way, they had more control over how their images were marketed.
