“Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” is a Christmas song with lyrics by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, released in 1971 as a single by John & Yoko/Plastic Ono Band with the Harlem Community Choir.

The lyrics are set to the traditional English ballad “Skewball”.

It was the seventh single release by Lennon outside of his work with the Beatles. The song reached number 4 in the UK, where its release was delayed until November 1972, and has periodically reemerged on the UK Singles Chart, most notably after Lennon’s death in 1980, at which point it peaked at number 2.

Also a protest song against the Vietnam War, “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” has since become a Christmas standard, frequently covered by other artists, appearing on compilation albums of seasonal music, and named in polls as a holiday favorite.

John Lennon was an English music artist who gained worldwide fame as one of the members of the Beatles, for his subsequent solo career, and for his political activism and pacifism.

On 8 December 1980, thirty six years ago, Lennon was shot by Mark David Chapman in the archway of the Dakota, his residence in New York City.

Lennon had just returned from Record Plant Studio with his wife, Yoko Ono.

After sustaining four major gunshot wounds, Lennon was pronounced dead on arrival at Roosevelt Hospital.

This day, 35 years ago, marks the passing of English singer
and songwriter and former member of The Beatles, John Lennon.
(Born John Winston Lennon; Oct. 9, 1940 – 8 Dec.19, 80)

John Lennon was an English musician who gained worldwide fame as one of the members of the Beatles, for his subsequent solo career, and for his political activism and pacifism.

He was shot by “a deranged American gunman” (I refuse to use his name) in the archway of the building where he lived, The Dakota, in New York City on 8 December 1980.

Lennon had just returned from Record Plant Studio with his wife, Yoko Ono.

After sustaining four fatal gunshot wounds, Lennon was pronounced dead on arrival at Roosevelt Hospital. He was 40 years old.

At the hospital, it was stated that nobody could have lived for more than a few minutes after sustaining such injuries. Shortly after local news stations reported Lennon’s death, crowds gathered at Roosevelt Hospital and in front of the Dakota.

Lennon was cremated on 10 December 1980 at the Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, New York. The ashes were given to Ono, who chose not to hold a funeral for him.

Julian Lennon is a musician, photographer and a filmmaker. You can also add cook to that list. Some may not know this, but John Lennon’s son is very good in the kitchen, revealing that if he weren’t a singer or visual artist, he’d likely be a chef.

He wants to tell the story behind “Everything Changes,” his fifth studio album and the first to hit the U.S. in 15 years. The set comes nearly 30 years after Lennon unveiled his debut, “Vallotte,” which spawned the hit “Too Late for Goodbyes” and earned a young Lennon a best new artist Grammy nomination.

Ever since he’s been in and out of the music industry, exploring his other passions during those long stints in between albums. “I love the writing and recording and performing but all the business stuff in between is not something I care for too much…In regards to all the work I do I very much consider it from an angle of being a true artist,” said Lennon. “And a lot of use of was being made of whose son I was, Beatles…and all of that. And I wanted to push away from that – and I wanted to prove myself –- to myself first and foremost –- that was actually I guess as good as I think I am in the songwriting department and all the work I’m doing.”

But a couple of years ago, the timing for new music just felt right, so Lennon, 50, hit the studio to record the tracks for “Everything Changes.” The songs that made it on the album span many themes –- from romance and introspection to humanitarian concerns. The lead single, “Someday,” features mystical Eastern melodic motifs, as well as a guest appearance by Steven Tyler.

To start the day …. “Imagine Peace Tower”!!

How could I have missed this?

I have always been an ardent fan and follower of John Lennon, his music and his genius. I lived through all of it. I experienced it first hand. I couldn’t comprehend then or still why he was taken. The only solace is that there’s always a Divine plan …. a soul leaves this world when it has completed the journey that was assigned to it.

Nevertheless, I’m very glad that this information came across through my Facebook feed … I thank “Charles” who posted it.

The Imagine Peace Tower is a memorial to John Lennon from his widow, Yoko Ono, located on Viðey Island in Kollafjörður Bay near Reykjavík, Iceland. It consists of a tall tower of light, projected from a white stone monument that has the words “Imagine Peace” carved into it in 24 languages. These words, and the name of the tower, are a reference to Lennon’s peace anthem “Imagine“.

Buried underneath the light tower are over 1 million written wishes that Ono gathered over the years in another project, called Wish Trees. Ono plans to have the tower lit every year from 9 October, Lennon’s birthday, through 8 December, the date he was shot. Iceland was selected for the project because of its beauty and its eco-friendly use of geothermal energy.

Construction of the tower started on 9 October 2006 when Ono dedicated the location, and it was officially unveiled on the same date in 2007. The ceremony was broadcast internationally to numerous television networks. In attendance with Ono were son Sean Lennon, band mate Ringo Starr, and Olivia Harrison, widow of George Harrison, and Olivia’s son Dhani Harrison. Paul McCartney was invited, but could not attend due to a court case. Yoko Ono said on the day of the inauguration that the tower was the best thing that she and John had ever done.

IMAGINE PEACE TOWER is an outdoor work of art conceived by Yoko Ono in memory of John Lennon. It is situated on Viðey Island in Reykjavík, Iceland. The artwork was dedicated to John by Yoko at its unveiling on October 9th 2007, John Lennon’s 67th birthday.

IMAGINE PEACE TOWER symbolizes Lennon’s and Ono’s continuing campaign for world peace – which began in the sixties, was sealed by their marriage in 1969 and will continue forever.

The words IMAGINE PEACE are inscribed on the Well in 24 different languages.

IMAGINE PEACE TOWER is composed of a tall shimmering tower of light that will appear every year and be visible from October 9th (Johns birthday) until December 8th (the anniversary of his passing).

In addition, the Tower will illuminate from Winter Solstice (December 21st 28th), on New Years Eve (December 31st) and the first week of spring (March 21st -28th). It is lit from 2 hours after sunset until midnight, and until dawn on New Years Day.

On 9th October, John Lennon’s birthday, Yoko Ono asks the people of Iceland to join her and many others across the rest of the world in praying for peace and stability.

At 8pm, as IMAGINE PEACE TOWER is illuminated on the island of Viðey, in Reykjavik, Iceland, she asks everyone to join together and let the power of light and prayer become a collective expression of the desire for peace and harmony on our planet.
