My sentiments exactly … ‘In summary, Serena Williams said the incident was a case in point of the glaring double standards according to which male and female tennis players are judged, and I concur with her.’
… and she has dealt with these standards and negative comments most of her life!! Notice the latest cartoon … so very insulting and disrespectful!!

Right off the bat, I confess to a bias on behalf of Serena Williams. She’s want I wish my granddaughter to aspire to emulate, someone who belies the odds to become all that she was meant to be, not constrained by what others want her to be or to act like, as a female. She is an athlete par excellence, a fighter, assertive, strong and a decent, honorable role model.
By now, most peoples who follow the news have learned that Serena Williams argued with the umpire Carlos Ramos during the recent women’s singles final match against Naomi Osaka at the US Open. It is admittedly true that my hero acted emotionally and unrestrained on this occasion. It is also true that the umpire was overly harsh in delivering the penalty of a lost point at the worst possible time in the game.

It Is What It Is 
Full discloser, I have not followed the game for many years but there are a few things about the coverage of this championship game that bother me. The first of course it the whole “angry black woman” narrative. The gender bias in the game, not only with Serena but also another female player, who took off her shirt with a sportswear underneath vs. the male players who sit there without shirts. The third issue is that Naomi Osaka is bi-racial. She was born in Japan and apparently represents Japan but she is an American citizen, her father is Haitian and she has been living in the US since age 3. No one is talking about her accomplishments. Its been overshadowed by this drama and media frenzy. The fourth is that people say other people get coaching from the sidelines or other people have tantrums on the court, etc. My mother would ask us “if everybody is jumping off the cliff, are you going to jump too?” Everyone, even the great ones must take responsibility for their actions. I think Serena did so when she was able to get it together. Was it too little, too late? I’ve said more than enough. Thanks

I fully agree with you. I don’t really follow tennis and found out about this through Twitter. Then I started looking … and it’s all over. Meltdown, anger, lashing out, etc. … this bothered me. Then the $17,000 fine … and to top it all the ugly cartoon from Australia … it’s like, ‘she never does anything right!!

Sadly for me, it was a kinda loss for both … something was stolen from both of them, because of the unbending umpire who, I’ve read, has done this before …. 😦
