~~HUMANITARIAN AWARD …. IN REMEMBERANCE OF NELSON MANDELA~~
I truly need to thank IDEALISTIC REBEL at http://idealisticrebel.wordpress.com/2013/12/07/humanitarian-award/
… for even considering my blog “It Is What It Is” at https://hrexach.wordpress.com/ for this very important award.
Nelson Mandela (18 July 1918 – 5 December 2013) was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, politician, and philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999.
He was the first black South African to hold the office, and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid through tackling institutionalised racism, poverty and inequality, and fostering racial reconciliation. Politically an African nationalist and democratic socialist, he served as President of the African National Congress (ANC) from 1991 to 1997. Internationally, Mandela was Secretary General of the Non-Aligned Movement from 1998 to 1999.
The Mandela who led the African National Congress into government displayed a conspicuous sense of his own dignity and a self-belief that nothing in 27 years of imprisonment had been capable of destroying.
As president, he created a new constitution that gave blacks equal rights and sought justice for the abused. By expanding economic, education, healthcare and land reform, Nelson rescued the South African people from poverty, disease and civil war.
He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and has received over 250 other awards for his contributions to South African politics and for his influence on other oppressed societies.
He is referred to as “The Father of the Nation” in South Africa because he had the courage to stand up to a force no one else thought could be overcome and was willing to risk his life to fight for the freedom of his people.
