Mind Chatter

I am sharing this event today as it further illustrates how messed we are as a general society.

In Wal-Mart today, doing my shopping.  In my scooter I come into an aisle wherein there is a young Black man, jeans down around his bum, looking at the chips.  I try very hard not to judge people so it wasn’t even an option to be rude to this young man, there was no need.  His basket was in the middle of the aisle; I said, “excuse me”, and he politely moved it to the side.  A bonus for me was his words to me upon looking down at me in the scooter:  he said, “Oh sorry there, beautiful.”  I know I didn’t look beautiful, but just someone saying it was nice.  He moved his cart, I was able to get to the items I needed, and we went back to shopping…

A Pictoral Homage to the ” Father of South Africa”

So well done!! Pictures capture history … and memories abound. We can seen him …. and his stature!! RIP …

Mr. Mandela fought hard and long to bring freedom to the people of South Africa. At the beginning of his rise, South Africa was always governed by its Caucasian minority. He transcended the struggles of his life and kept his eyes on equality and freedom for his countrymen and women. His life will always serve as a shining example of the ability to forgive, for being progressive and for having compassion. In deep respect, the world says a reluctant goodbye to this icon.

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (18 July 1918 – 5 December 2013) was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary as well as a politician and philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the first black South African to hold the office, and the first elected in a fully representative election.

His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid through tackling institutionalized racism, poverty and inequality, and fostering racial reconciliation.

Politically an African nationalist and democratic socialist, he served as the President of the African National Congress (ANC) from 1991 to 1997. Internationally, Mandela was the Secretary General of the Non-Aligned Movement from 1998 to 1999.

RIP Nelson Mandela Dead at 95 – Hanson Baliruno New Ugandan music 2013

Published on Feb 11, 2013

Former South African President Nelson Mandela, who served 27 years in prison for anti-apartheid activities and led his continent into a new era, has died at age 95.

South African President Jacob Zuma confirmed the news:
“He is now resting. He is now at peace,” Zuma said. “Our nation has lost its greatest son. Our people have lost a father.”

Born Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela in Transkei, South Africa, the civil rights activist would become the linchpin in South Africans’ move to end the country’s notorious apartheid regime.

The impact of his efforts — to reconcile generosity with pragmatism and to find the common ground between humanity’s higher values and his own aspiration to power, as journalist John Carlin once described them — would ultimately reach well beyond South Africa’s borders, and earn him a Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

Madiba – The Mandela Tribute Song by Dr Cyril Harrisberg

Published on Nov 19, 2013

I composed the Nelson Mandela Tribute Song as a tribute to the man who has done so much for humanity, to encourage the rest of our leaders and the people in our country to spread and hold on to the good values that Tata Madiba has inspired in so many of us.

I dreamt the lyrics and the music for the song when I heard that Nelson Mandela was not well. Having been in ill health myself over the past 5 years, I wish to send a message of gratitude to Madiba for what he has achieved for our Rainbow Nation and also to honour him in his passing.

The lyrics call on all South Africans to enter into a value system of tolerance and goodwill towards the people of our diverse and wonderful rainbow nation, and to hand these values down to our children. This is an uplifting song not only for South Africa but for the international community.

The Man Who Invented Christmas

Excellent post!! Getting into the Xmas spirit!!

Romancing the Bee

Charles Dickens rediscovered the great Christian festival that  had been on the wane in Great Britain since the latter part of the eighteenth century.  The fact is that  Dickens more than anybody else revived the English Christmas traditions which had nearly died out.

the man who invented christmas

Professor Les Standiford, author of  The Man Who Invented Christmas, says: “Dickens is responsible for Christmas as we know it. He obviously didn’t invent it as an idea, but what he did with A Christmas Carol began the process that led to what we have today.”

Christmas was barely celebrated at the start of the 1800s and December 25 was just a normal working day.“The holiday was still suffering the effects of the Puritan era and seen as a Pagan enterprise,” says Professor Standiford.

“The publication of A Christmas Carol added an emotional component to Christmas and changed it. We will never know what Christmas…

Transgene Escape …. Uncontrolled!!

Image

GMOs are spreading throughout the world without any controls in place to stop them.

They have escaped their intended areas and are moving into the environment and even infringing on wild plant populations.

This is happening everywhere and something must be done to stop it before it worsens.

http://www.nationofchange.org/transgene-escape-gmos-spreading-uncontrollably-around-world-1386086334 #GMOs #GEContamination #Contamination #Food #GMOs #Biodiversity

Testbiotech, a nonprofit organization started with independent (‘non-biased’) biotech research in mind, recently released a report on the spread of genetically altered plants.

The organization says GMOs are spreading throughout the world without any controls in place to stop them. They have escaped their intended areas and are moving into the environment and even infringing on wild plant populations.

In the U.S., Canada, Central America, Japan, China, Australia, and Europe, genetically modified organisms are spreading into the food system. This is happening with corn, rice, cotton, flaxseed, bentgrass, and poplar trees, according to the Testbiotech report.

~~Just 3 examples of GM contamination can be seen here~~

  • GM Wheat – An unapproved strain of genetically modified wheat was discovered in an Oregon field earlier this year. The Roundup Ready strain was nixed in 2005 when global resistance to Monsanto forced the company to stop working on it. It was never approved for use, let along growing and exporting.
  • GM Rice – During 2006 and 2007, three different strains of genetically modified rice were found in US rice exports and subsequently the world over. There were three specific strains of rice—one of which was approved in the U.S. and the other two which were not. Still, none of the strains were approved for cultivation or consumption anywhere else in the world. In total, the GM rice was found in more than 30 countries.

Image

To make matters worse, the USDA now considers GMO contamination “normal”.

Image

Testbiotech says there are several reasons for “transgene escape”. They say the future impact of this unregulated spread of GM technology is, quite simply, unknown.

Apart from commercial cultivation and experimental field trials, losses from the import and transport of viable grains for food and feed production are a source of uncontrolled dispersal. The consequences cannot be reliably predicted, and from the cases documented in the overview it is evident that no prediction can be made on how these plants will behave in the long-term or interact with biodiversity.

The organization is calling on EU Commissioner Tonio Borg, who is pushing for GMO authorization throughout the EU, to honestly assess the consequences of GM technology.

Image

One route by which transgenes (the genes engineered into crops) may cause harm is by permanently escaping from agricultural environments into wild or natural areas. This is not likely to happen with most GMO crop plants, because most crops have been hobbled by millennia of breeding and cannot survive without human intervention, such as planting and weeding.

The addition of one or several transgenes generally cannot overcome this long history of domestication. However, most crops have wild relatives that they can interbreed with, thus passing crop genes and transgenes into these wild species. For example, over 20 important crops grown in the U.S. have related wild species they can mate with.

Unlike the crop, these wild plants can thrive without human assistance. In fact, some are also troublesome weeds that can harm the wild environment or farmers’ fields. In some cases, the addition of transgenes may make the wild plant a more aggressive weed, or harm wildlife that consumes the plant.

Image

Transgene escape

Recently, New Scientist (NS) magazine reviewed new research that found just such an escape. Although not a food crop, the escape artist, creeping bentgrass, is widely grown on golf courses and lawns in the U.S. As the NS review noted, 9 of 20,400 wild bentgrass plants were transgenic, and the plants were found as far as 3.8 km from the edge of a “control district” that contained the field trials. This is the first documented escape of transgenes in the U.S., and probably the first known escape from a field trial anywhere. The review acknowledges that if the transgenic grass reaches sensitive waterways (a typical habitat for this grass species), controlling it with Roundup (glyphosate) would not be an option.

Roundup is one of the few herbicides allowed for this purpose because it degrades rapidly in water.

The article also briefly quotes one of the researchers as saying, somewhat cryptically, that the bentgrass story is a cautionary tale of what could happen with other GMOs that could be of greater concern, and that he expects more examples of escape to be discovered.

NGM

A genetically modified (GM) crop has been found thriving in the wild for the first time in the United States. Transgenic canola is growing freely in parts of North Dakota, researchers told the Ecological Society of America conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, today.

The scientists behind the discovery say this highlights a lack of proper monitoring and control of GM crops in the United States.

US farmers have dramatically increased their use of GM crops since the plants were introduced in the early 1990s. Last year, nearly half the world’s transgenic crops were grown in US soil — Brazil, the world’s second heaviest user, grew just 16%. GM crops have broken free from cultivated land in several countries, including Canada, the United Kingdom and Japan, but they have not previously been found in uncultivated land in the United States.

“The regulatory protocols designed to reduce or prevent escape and proliferation of feral transgenic crops are ineffective. Current tracking and monitoring of GM organisms are insufficient,” she says. Sagers blames the delay in discovering escaped populations of transgenic plants in the United States largely on the lack of funding for research in this area.

Genetically Modified Organisms

Border1

Image

GMOs are made by manipulation of extremely deadly viruses & bacteria (such as E. coli) that have been engineered to be IMMUNE TO ANTIBIOTICS.

Monsanto spends millions of dollars each year in order to “sugar” coat the facts of what GMOs actually are and more importantly, how they are made.

Monsanto’s greed, combined with their quest to monopolize all aspects of food & seed on the planet, has knowingly allowed the proverbial Reaper free upon the world.

GMOs are now acting much like the deadly virus and pre-cancer type cells they are made from… by infecting other organisms that were once pure and healthy.
