NO PLACE FOR THEM

This Thanksgiving, No Place for Refugees at the American Table
Posted on Nov 18, 2015
By Amy Goodman and Denis Moynihan

In the wake of the horrific attacks in Paris on Nov. 13, there has been a crushing backlash against refugees from the wars in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. As Americans prepare for one of the most popular national holidays, Thanksgiving, which commemorates the support and nourishment provided by the indigenous people to English refugees seeking a better life free from religious persecution, a wave of xenophobia is sweeping the country.

In the U.S. Congress, no less than six separate bills have been put forward to block any federal funding to resettle refugees from Syria or Iraq and to empower states to deny entry into their “territory.”

Imagine if all of a sudden we had 50 “statelets” creating their own border checkpoints, stopping all travelers, looking for anyone suspicious, i.e., any and all Syrians.

So far, 31 state governors have essentially demanded this.

ThxG

Republican Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback issued an executive order forbidding any agency of state government from cooperating in any way with Syrian refugee support efforts. House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have called for a pause in the Syrian refugee program, with the support of Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer.

(all so called Chrstians)

It has been almost 400 years since that first, fateful Thanksgiving feast in Massachusetts.

Xenophobic policies like those threatening to shut out refugees from these wars, if allowed to stand, should serve as a shameful centerpiece at every Thanksgiving table this year.

Thoughts for today, #258 …. “Smudging Ceremony .. Smudging Prayer”!!

Smudge

~~October 7, 2015~~

SMUDGING CEREMORY

Our Native elders have taught us that before a person can be healed or heal another, one must be cleansed of any bad feelings, negative thoughts, bad spirits or negative energy – cleansed both physically and spiritually.

This helps the healing to come through in a clear way, without being distorted or sidetracked by negative “stuff” in either the healer or the client. The elders say that all ceremonies, tribal or private, must be entered into with a good heart so that we can pray, sing, and walk in a sacred manner, and be helped by the spirits to enter the sacred realm.

Native people throughout the world use herbs to accomplish this. One common ceremony is to burn certain herbs, take the smoke in one’s hands and rub or brush it over the body. Today this is commonly called “smudging.” In Western North America the three plants most frequently used in smudging are sage, cedar, and sweetgrass.

Every once in a while, negative energy will surround you. This energy takes over and becomes part of your innate energy.

This cycle needs to be stopped because if not, it will continue to grow and build up.

This will affect every aspect of your life.

Smudging may help.

Thoughts for today, #201 …. “Two Spirit People”!!

TwoSpirits

~~July 18, 2015~~

“GENDER AND TRANSGENDER IN NATIVE AMERICAN TRADITION”

In Native American cultures, people that we would usually call gay or transgender are known as ‘two-spirit people’
people who embody both male and female spirits. Sometimes these two-spirit people are known in anthropological literature as ‘berdache‘.

There’s a video that beautifully presents the two-spirit tradition.

It emphasizes that the two-spirit role is a spiritual one, which makes it different from gay or lesbian identity, which is based on the physical and social.

Something to think about …. “What a Real American Looks Like”!!

Native

~~July 2, 2015~~

What Does an American Look Like?

America is home to a beautiful array of different races and ethnicities.

On most city streets it’s common to look around and see a plethora of people representing every region of the world. Ancestors who came to America at different times over the last couple of centuries have added their legacy and dreams to our nation. However, the question of what does an American look like can result in some intriguing answers.

In 2012, photographer Matika Wilbur sold everything in her Seattle apartment and hit the road on a cross-country journey.

Her goal?

To photograph individuals from each of the 562 federally recognized Native American tribes in the United States and memorialize their stories.

Since then, the number of federally recognized tribes has risen to 566, and Wilbur is still crisscrossing the country, immersing herself in the worlds of Native Americans from Brooklyn to the far reaches of Alaska for her ongoing photo series, Project 562.

“Stereotypes in the media reduce Indian country to the Plains Indian in a headdress,” said scholar Adrienne Keene, a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma whom Wilbur photographed for the series. “(Project 562) gives people an opportunity to see the diversity in Indian country and reframe what they think of when they think of Native Americans.”

Something to think about …. “You are ALL illegal”!!

Illegal

~~June 7, 2015~~

GUESS WHAT?

Native Americans are indigenous within the boundaries of the present-day United States (including the indigenous peoples of Alaska and Hawaii) and are composed of numerous, distinct tribes, bands and ethnic groups, many of which survive as intact, sovereign nations.

The terms Natives use to refer to themselves vary regionally and generationally, with many older Natives self-identifying as “Indians,” while younger Natives often identify as “Indigenous.” Which terms should be used by non-Natives has at times been controversial.

The term “Native American” has been adopted by major newspapers and some academic groups, but does not traditionally include Native Hawaiians or certain Alaskan Natives, such as Aleut, Yup’ik, or Inuit peoples.

Native peoples from Canada are known as First Nations.

Full Flower Moon …. May 3, 2015!!

MayFull

~~May 3, 2015~~

Full moon up all night on May 3-4

May 3, 2015 – the May 2015 full moon counts as the second full moon after the March 20 equinox. In North America, we often call this particular full moon the Flower Moon, Milk Moon or Planting Moon.

This Full Moon in Scorpio will have us delving into the deep mysteries of the heart and feeling our truth. We are being asked to feel instead of think and to act instead of speak.

FM9

~Full Moon Names and Their Meanings~

Full Moon names date back to Native Americans, of what is now the northern and eastern United States. The tribes kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full Moon. Their names were applied to the entire month in which each occurred. There was some variation in the Moon names, but in general, the same ones were current throughout the Algonquin tribes from New England to Lake Superior. European settlers followed that custom and created some of their own names. Since the lunar month is only 29 days long on the average, the full Moon dates shift from year to year. Here is the Farmers Almanac’s list of the full Moon names.

~Full Flower Moon~

May In most areas, flowers are abundant everywhere during this time. Thus, the name of this Moon. Other names include the Full Corn Planting Moon, or the Milk Moon.

Native American Full Moon Names and Their Meanings

The Full Moon Names we use in the Almanac come from the Algonquin tribes who lived in regions from New England to Lake Superior. They are the names the Colonial Americans adapted most. Note that each full Moon name was applied to the entire lunar month in which it occurred.

The Mount Rushmore National Memorial is a sculpture carved into the granite face of Mount Rushmore (Lakota Sioux name: Six Grandfathers) near Keystone, South Dakota, in the United States. Sculpted by Danish-American Gutzon Borglum and his son, Lincoln Borglum, Mount Rushmore features 60-foot (18 m) sculptures of the heads of four United States presidents: George Washington (1732–1799), Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826), Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919), and Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865).

BlackBor

The re-imagining of Mount Rushmore goes beyond disputes about, for instance, who should be considered the “real” founding fathers — Mount Rushmore is located in the Black Hills, land that i sacred to a number of tribes.

It’s also land that, according to the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868, was to belong to American Indians forever.

But after an expedition led by General Custer discovered gold there in 1874, the Fort Laramie Treaty was soon scrapped and the Lakota relocated to The Lakota and others say that Mount Rushmore isn’t just a piece of art they dislike; it’s a piece of art they dislike that, to put it in European terms, has been forcibly installed in their own church.
