~TURKEYS LOVE PUERTO RICO~
BEST PLACE FOR PARDONS
PERNIL, PASTELES AND MORE
There’s no best place for Thanksgiving than a Puerto Rican household.
Yesterday, by chance, I was lucky enough to be invited to a second dinner.
First one with family, second one with Puerto Rican friends.
You will correctly imagine which one was more fun and which one delighted the taste buds!!

National Thanksgiving Turkey Presentation is a ceremony that takes place at the White House every year shortly before Thanksgiving. The President of the United States is presented with a live domestic turkey by the National Turkey Federation, usually of the Broad Breasted White variety.
The ceremony dates back to the 1940s, with presidents occasionally sparing the bird presented to them; since 1989, during George H. W. Bush’s first Thanksgiving as president, it has been an annual tradition for the president to “pardon” the turkey.

PUERTO RICAN WOMEN
I’m a proud Boricua woman
My heritage comes from Taíno, Spanish and African roots.
All of which I’m very proud of.
Many came before me … and in 1950, I was born!
HortyRex©
The recorded history of women in Puerto Rico can trace its roots back to the era of the Taíno, the indigenous people of the Caribbean, who inhabited the island that they called “Borikén” before the arrival of Spaniards. During the Spanish colonization the cultures and customs of the Taíno, Spanish, African and women from non-Hispanic European countries blended into what became the culture and customs of Puerto Rico.
In the early part of the 19th Century the women in Puerto Rico were Spanish subjects and had little individual rights. Those who belonged to the upper class of the Spanish ruling society had better educational opportunities then those who did not. However, there were many women who were already active participants in the labor movement and in the agricultural economy of the island.
After Puerto Rico was ceded to the United States in 1898 as a result of the Spanish–American War, women once again played an integral role in Puerto Rican society by contributing to the establishment of the University of Puerto Rico, women’s suffrage, women’s rights, civil rights, and to the military of the United States.
During the period of industrialization of the 1950’s, many women in Puerto Rico found employment in the needle industry, working as seamstresses in garment factories. Many Puerto Rican families also migrated to the United States in the 1950’s.

THE PUERTO RICAN EXPERIENCE
The Indian, Spanish and African races came together on the island of Puerto Rico, contributing their blood and traditions to the formation of the Puerto Rican culture.
The original inhabitants of Puerto Rico at the time of the Spanish conquest were the Taíno and Carib Indian-tribes.
We are young and old, we are women and men, we are professionals and blue collar workers, we are farmers and doctors, we are architects and farmers, we are actors and painters.
We are a bit of everything!!

SAINT MARIA MAGDALENA de PAZZIS
Santa María Magdalena de Pazzis Cemetery is a colonial-era cemetery located in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico.
It is the final resting place of many of Puerto Rico’s most prominent natives and residents.
(Notice one of them: Félix Benítez Rexach)
Construction began in 1863 under the auspices of Ignacio Mascaro.
The cemetery is located outside the walls of Fort San Felipe del Morro fortress, one of the island’s most famous landmarks. The average height of the wall is 40 feet and the width ranges from 15 to 20 feet.
It was named in honor of Saint Maria Magdalena de Pazzi.

DIALYSIS TREATMENT
~VIEQUES, PUERTO RICO~
This is a topic which is very dear and close to my heart.
As a retired physician, I fully understand the process, the need for treatment, the underlying medical conditions and the meaning of life-saving treatment.
On the other hand, my only brother died of complications of chronic renal failure several years ago. In the aftermath of Hurricane María, I often thought about him and how he would manage to receive this three times a week treatment when the electrical power situation and the hospital care was so lacking in my country.
One year after Hurricane María, Puerto Ricans living in Vieques, go through harrowing, uncomfortable, tiring, exhausting and dangerous ways to receive their treatment.
This video explains their situation.
An American possession with this ‘quality of care’?
Laughable … not!!
HortyRex©
In medicine, dialysis is the process of removing excess water, solutes, and toxins from the blood in people whose kidneys can no longer perform these functions naturally.
This is referred to as renal replacement therapy.
~~Wikipedia~~
Dialysis Patients Are Still Trekking 12 Hours for Care After Hurricane María
Left without a hospital, some Puerto Ricans must travel by plane for lifesaving treatment
Hurricane María totaled Vieques’s hospital, which housed the island’s only dialysis clinic
That set off an ongoing crisis for patients with kidney failure who cannot survive without dialysis and for whom the thrice-weekly round trip to a dialysis center in Humacao on Puerto Rico’s main island, including treatment, takes at least 12 hours.

Ricky Martin shocked the audience with an unexpected visit to Ellen, and talked to her about JetBlue’s Check in For Good contest, what it’s like being married, and being nominated for an Emmy for “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story“.
Plus, Ellen and her friends at Shutterfly also had a big surprise for Ricky so he can continue his efforts to help rebuild Puerto Rico.
