 “Don’t Lie to Me”

Barbra is Watching Drumpf

One of my of all time, favorite music icons is using her platform to express her feelings about the reality which the ‘squatter in the White House’ has with the truth and with facts.

One awesome voice speaking for many of us!!

HortyRex©

GoldSwirl

Barbra Streisand is always watching Drumpf

When we spoke, she had just tweeted about him and read it aloud:

“All President Trump cares about is winning.

He said it during his campaign, and he says it now.

But what do we all lose as he wins?”

Streisand, no stranger to politics throughout her career, is releasing her first album of original songs since 2005, called Walls, on November 2.

Late last month, she released the album’s first single, “Don’t Lie to Me,” which is a direct address to the president. And on Tuesday, Streisand released the music video – the first she’s ever directed – complete with images of protests and even a sign somewhere in there that says “Stop Kavanaugh.”

Barb2

“I’m just so concerned with our country and the world,” she said. “When I say in the song ‘we all lose,’ do we lose our integrity as a nation? Do we lose our reputation in the world? One of the songs talks about a beacon of light, and ‘Lady Liberty’ talked about the danger in the sound of silence, when people don’t speak up, when people don’t vote. And now we have a leader who can’t be trusted. The way he pushed Kavanaugh onto the Supreme Court to protect himself is unconscionable; we have a leader and now a Supreme Court justice who tells lies.”

GoldSwirl

She added that it’s the young people of this country who are already living out the message of her new album and who have already set the example of what good activism looks like.

“As I say in the booklet of the new album, I’ve been especially moved by the young people in the United States who have found their voice and are demanding to be heard,” she said.

“They’re more interested in building bridges than walls; they are the very definition of hope.

They’re on my mind, and I dedicate this album to them.”

~MAYOR OF SAN JUAN, THE CAPITAL CITY OF PUERTO RICO~

Carmen Yulín Cruz Soto (born February 25, 1963) is an American politician who is the current mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Cruz is affiliated with the Popular Democratic Party.

I have to confess that I didn’t know anything about this woman.

The first time I heard about her was during those terrible days after Hurricane MarĂa battered my country. I live in the mainland. I’ve been away from home since 1999.

She became the voice for those in the diaspora as we hungered for news about our country.

To this day you will hear negative comments about her.

She didn’t do her job, she took advantage of the situation to benefit her own political ambitions, she forgot about the people of San Juan, she’s posing because she wants to run for governor, she’s a socialist, she aligns herself with Puerto Rico’s independence while pretending to be a member of the Partido Popular DemocrĂĄtico, etc., etc.

I don’t care what they say about her, I don’t care what they think … to me, she became that voice that we desperately needed to hear.

She’s the only political official who has stood up to Drumpf and his administration.

Yul8

I was hungry for news about the Island after the devastating hurricane

I was born and raised in Puerto Rico. I lived there all my life. I lived through many hurricanes, not MarĂa, of course. I know the landscape of my country. I know how the towns in the central part of the island were affected without me being there. I know, without being there, how the medical needs couldn’t be addressed because of lack of power. I knew 16, 64 deaths were not correct. There are at least 11 refrigerated vans at the forensic facility containing bodies … the capacity to conduct autopsies and eventual identification has been overwhelmed.

I have family and friends who were without power for 11 months. When communication was possible, I finally was able to get in touch with them. I sent care packages to them including the most basic items that we generally take for granted. I already went back to see.

By the time I returned, there was a semblance of recovery.

Yes, power is restored … not totally. And it’s still very fragile.

Power outings for hours and days at a time are commonplace.

Politics in Puerto Rico is ‘the national sport’.

My political ideology related to Puerto Rico has gone through a gamut of feelings, ideas and a new conviction. The relationship with the United States is difficult to define.

I think it depends who you hear it from.

Drumpf …. “đŸ‡”đŸ‡· Denies nearly 3,000 Americans in Puerto Rico died in the aftermath of two back to back Hurricanes: Irma and MarĂa đŸ‡”đŸ‡· …. “!!

CartPR

Nearly 3,000 people died in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico

~HEADLINES~

On September 6, 2017, Hurricane Irma carved a merciless path of destruction through the Caribbean, killing at least 12 people, leaving thousands of others homeless and plunging more than 1 million residents of Puerto Rico into darkness.

Hurricane María the storm made landfall on September 20. María wreaked havoc on the island, causing a level of widespread destruction and disorganization paralleled by few storms in American history. Almost two weeks after the storm abated, most of the island’s residents still lack access to electricity and clean water.

TCart12

The aftermath of these hurricanes are well known to all Puerto Ricans.

The federal response, under the watch of Drumpf, was deficient, miserable and responsible for the deaths of 3,000+ Puerto Rican citizens.

The numbers have changed: 16, 64, 1,400, 2,975, 4,645 …

I believe that the real number will never be known.

I will never forget. I will never forgive!

“They did not die in the hurricane.

They died in pain, at home, of kidney failure unable to access the dialysis clinic for weeks.

They died, gasping for hours near the end, when the oxygen tank they needed to breathe gave out.

They died in the dark and the heat of unsanitary ICU units, of burns or gunshot wounds received before the hurricane that they almost certainly would have survived otherwise.

They died, burning up with fever, of leptospirosis from being in touch with flood waters during the effort to save their neighbors.

They died in fear and confusion after being forced to go off their regular medication.
They died of heat stroke.

They died of diseases of antiquity, in a crisis of neglect unworthy the greatest, wealthiest and most powerful nation in human history.

They died. But we lived. And we remember.”

Drumpf denied this reality as a hurricane barrels toward the Carolinas

“3000 people did not die in the two hurricanes that hit Puerto Rico. When I left the Island, AFTER the storm had hit, they had anywhere from 6 to 18 deaths. As time went by it did not go up by much. Then, a long time later, they started to report really large numbers, like 3000.

DJTweets

Earlier this month, the island’s governor formally raised the death toll from Hurricane Maria to an estimated 2,975 from 64 following a study conducted by researchers at The George Washington University.

CNN’s own reporting reflects similar numbers.

The university study accounted for Puerto Ricans who succumbed to the stifling heat and other aftereffects of the storm and had not been previously counted in official figures

“I think Puerto Rico was incredibly successful,” Drumpf said Tuesday in the Oval Office, noting that the island location is “tough” during a hurricane due to the inability to transport vital equipment and supplies by truck. “It was one of the best jobs that’s ever been done with respect to what this is all about.”

EARTH DAY 2018

~THERE’S A LOT DO TO STILL~

I was 20 years old in 1970.

I remember the establishment of this day. I took a summer class in college all about the environment in my country, Puerto Rico. I bought books, I read them all. I became aware of Bill McKibben (The End of Nature), Jeffrey Hollender (How To Make the World a Better Place), The Earthworks Group (50 Simple Things You Can Do series) and many more.

I was young, idealistic adult and a believer that my generation would change things.

As I look back today, it saddens me to see that I was wrong.

More than ever, there’s a lot of work to do today.

Here are some of my ‘green books’!!

img_8875 Earth Day 1970, an event to increase public awareness of the world’s environmental problems, is celebrated in the United States for the first time.

Millions of Americans, including students from thousands of colleges and universities, participated in rallies, marches, and educational programs.

Earth Day was the brainchild of Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, a staunch environmentalist who hoped to provide unity to the grassroots environmental movement and increase ecological awareness.

“The objective was to get a nationwide demonstration of concern for the environment so large that it would shake the political establishment out of its lethargy,” Senator Nelson said, “and, finally, force this issue permanently onto the national political agenda.”

Earth Day indeed increased environmental awareness in America, and in July of that year the Environmental Protection Agency was established by special executive order to regulate and enforce national pollution legislation.

Prolific poet and writer Maya Angelou would’ve turned 90 on Wednesday, April 4, 2018.
To honor and celebrate the phenomenal woman who penned the powerful “Still I Rise,” Google has dedicated the day’s doodle on its search homepage to Angelou, who died in 2014 at age 86.

The doodle is accompanied by an animated reading of “Still I Rise,” featuring the voices of celebrities she influenced, including Oprah Winfrey, Alicia Keys, America Ferrera and Laverne Cox. Her only son, Guy Johnson, also lends his voice.

“Maya Angelou is not what she has done or written or spoken, it’s how she did it all,” Winfrey told Google.

“She moved through the world with unshakeable calm, confidence, and a fiery, fierce grace and abounding love.”

Wednesday also marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., a friend of the author’s.

For more than 30 years, in lieu of celebrating her birthday, Angelou sent flowers to Coretta Scott King on April 4.

JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR

O-M-G!

~Thy Rock ‘N’ Roll Holiness Electrifies In Amped Up Musical Event~

Yesterday, on Easter Sunday, I was visiting family to celebrate the occasion.
I had set my DVR in case I wasn’t home before the show began … and that was the case.

You see, back in 1970, when the LP was released, it became one of my favorite musical ever. I would stay in my room, lyrics in hand, headphones in place … till the wee hours in the morning listening to the music over and over.

Watching the show last night lead to many happy memories and moments of amazing flashbacks.

To my surprise, I remembered most of the lyrics.

For me, back then, the musical represented a state of the times … these being the times of Jesus Christ and the times when the musical production was released. To me, it was an attempt to explain the story of Jesus, Mary Magdalene, Judas, the Apostles and the politico-social reality of the era. It was also an attempt to bring humanity to the characters.

JC1

I found it quite interesting that 48 years after the initial release, the message still rang true and applied to the times we are currently living.

I definitely loved the concert.

I think the set, the musicians, the development concepts and the performances were beyond amazing.

John Legend, Sara Barielles, Alice Cooper and Brandon Victor Dixon were flawless.

In other words, I loved it!

It’s great that I have it recorded and can watch it over and over and over.

I will buy the DVD for sure when it’s released!

Jesus Christ Superstar is a 1970 rock opera with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. The musical started as a rock opera concept album before its Broadway debut in 1971.

The musical is mostly sung-through, with little spoken dialogue. The story is loosely based on the Gospels’ accounts of the last week of Jesus’s life, beginning with the preparation for the arrival of Jesus and his disciples in Jerusalem and ending with the crucifixion. It depicts political and interpersonal struggles between Judas Iscariot and Jesus that are not present in the Bible.

The work’s depiction offers a free interpretation of the psychology of Jesus and the other characters. A large part of the plot focuses on the character of Judas, who is depicted as a tragic figure dissatisfied with the direction in which Jesus steers his disciples. Contemporary attitudes and sensibilities (as well as slang) pervade the lyrics, and ironic allusions to modern life are scattered throughout the depiction of political events. Stage and film productions accordingly contain many intentional anachronisms.

It’s only appropriate that NBC’s Jesus Christ Superstar Live In Concert aired on Easter Sunday.

There is no better way to celebrate the Holy holiday than with an Easter egg hunt in the day and a live TV adaptation of an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical at night. And when it comes to NBC live musical events, Jesus Christ Superstar ranks at the top.

What could have felt like a dated rock opera was more like an uproarious arena concert filled with screaming fans, frenetic lights, blaring speakers, pyrotechnics and a group of musicians and performers fueled with the spirit of a chaotic electric guitar wildly flailing about – just how Jesus would have wanted it.

To say that the 40-something Ricky Martin maintains a boyish appeal may be the understatement of the year. The Puerto Rican superstar seized the spotlight as an angelic 12-year-old phenom in the boy band Menudo, beloved by teenyboppers and grandmothers alike.

He has rarely been out of the public eye since. Fresh off a blockbuster 2017 residency at the Monte Carlo Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Martin’s latest star turn has him portraying Gianni Versace’s boyfriend Antonio D’Amico in producer Ryan Murphy’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, on FX this January.

Martin’s greatest joy lies in the happy home life he has built with husband Jwan Yosef, a Syrian-born Swedish artist, and their nine-year-old twins, Matteo and Valentino.

Plena Puertorriqueña

~MANOLO AND OLGA~

It’s December 1.

The holiday season has already started.

It will be a bittersweet celebration in Puerto Rico. Yet, the Boricua spirit will never be vanquished.

This is a new song, dropping at the perfect time, with the perfect message. The Puerto Rican people shows their strength and resilience during difficult times.

“Que rico es poder decir que yo soy Puertorriqueño, que rico es poder decir que yo soy Puertorriqueño, enamorao de mi tierra de mi cultura y mi pueblo …

Sube esa bandera al son de una rica plena … “

#YoNoMeQuito

HortyRex©

GoldSwirl

The plena originated in Ponce, Puerto Rico around 1900

It was first heard in the neighborhood Barriada de la Torre, whose population consisted mostly of immigrants from St. Kitts, Tortola and St. Thomas, who had settled on the island since the late 1800’s. Originally, sung texts were not associated with the plena, which was rendered by guitar, accordion and pandero, but eventually, in 1907, singing was added.

Plena was often called the periodico cantado or “sung newspaper” for the lower classes because it spread messages among people, similar to the corridos in Mexico. The traditional center of plena was probably San AntĂłn, a barrio of Ponce, although the black neighborhood of LoĂza is also mentioned as the heartland for the genre. Its popularity peaked in the 1920’s.

HUMANITARIAN CRISIS IN PUERTO RICO

CBS 60 MINUTES OVERTIME

This past Sunday, November 5, CBS Television had a special segment detailing information about many Puerto Ricans, American citizens, having endured the longest blackout in American history following a direct hit from Hurricane MarĂa. I’ve been looking for this special on YouTube to share it with you.

The situation in Puerto Rico is still dire.

It seems that the segment presented in the regular show isn’t available yet. I will keep looking and share it when I find it.

During my search, I found this 60 Minutes Overtime presented on November 5 by Brit McCandless Farmer.

Take a look, please!

Forty-eight days today, after Hurricane MarĂa hit the island, ‘60 Minutes‘ found its citizens trying to make do without water or power – and frequently losing hope

Every day and night in San Juan, there are blackouts. But having electricity at all is a privilege, since most of the island is still without power.

“At night, it really quiets down because it’s dark,” says 60 Minutes associate producer Jack Weingart.

“The street lights are out, and most homes and businesses are also dark. So at night, you just hear this constant humming of the generators.”

Weingart, along with producers Graham Messick and Michael Karzis and associate producer Vanessa Fica, recently traveled to Puerto Rico with correspondent Steve Kroft to report this week for 60 Minutes.

As they traveled throughout the island, the dire status on the ground surprised them most.

“It’s really still in an emergency mode,” Karzis says.

“They haven’t graduated into a relief mode or recovery.”

But what does this exodus mean to an already crippled island?

“It means a territory, which is already fiscally circling the drain, having the tax base erode even further,” Karzis says.

“It does not help that you’re losing otherwise qualified professionals or a labor force that is dwindling. And what you’re left with are folks that are older, and are collecting pensions at this point or young kids.”

Almost seven weeks after the storm, producer Graham Messick says, it feels like some Puerto Ricans have given up.

“They’d lost hope,” he says. “And it’s like a state of suspended animation. People were just waiting for the power to come on. There’s just nothing to do. It’s boring. It’s hot. It’s uncomfortable.”

“And there are no answers. “
